Helena's has been our family go to place for Hawaiian food for at least 40 years. There is usually a 20 min wait at the peak lunch hr. but it is so worth it. The portions are big, the staff are warm and friendly, the food is ONO, the decor is very utilitarian 1940's which adds to the experience. Parking... More

First of all, I am a local on Oahu. Helena’s is a hidden treasure. Opened in 1946 and is now run by the grandson, Craig. From the looks of the place, you would never guess it was featured on Man vs Food and a winner of a James Beard Award. Don’t expect any fancy food – just really good local... More

I managed to go to Helena twice on my recent trip and had the most amazing food each time. I even spoke to Helena herself, who was sweet and hospitable. I tried a few things, including the laulau (ruined me for any other restaurant's laulau, it's the best here), kahlua pig and cabbage, short ribs, butterfish collar, and all topped... More

Try the"menu D" it gives you a sampling of 5 diferant foods. The short ribs (fried in oil) were amazingly good. The Lomi Salmon (think, chopped tomatoes, scallion and raw salmon in slightly salted liquid) was delicious. POI (Taro leaf puree, comes in chicken or squid versions) and Haupia (Coconut gelatin like pudding) were both very good. I wish I had... More

This little restaurant is like a "Diamond in the Ruff" so so special, very busy, but so worth it. This place will not disappoint you in the least bit.

This place was suggested by my nephew who lives in the area. It is small so it does get crowded, had to wait outside for a table. While we waited, noticed a lot of carry out orders. This was our first experience with Hawaiian food, tried just about everything. Service is fast and staff is great. Worth the wait.

Helena's might be out of the way for folks visiting Waikiki and main sites. There are plenty of restaurants of very high quality in town, all around the island. But Helena's is da kine. Everything Hawaiian you ever dreamed of, longed for when away from home (the Islands), is here. It's outstanding - well worth it for both the food,... More

Parking is a pain. There is a line out the door. The storefront is unassuming. You're asking "is this worth it?" Oh yes, my friend. Oh yes. The staff are super friendly and the line moves relatively fast. Food is simple, well prepared and Ono! We are a family of four and got Option D with three scoops of rice.... More

We selected this restaurant based on the reviews and personal recommendations. I did check out the website first and that was a huge help as there were pictures of the dishes and since it was our first experience with Hawaiian food it gave us an idea of what to look forward to. Parking can be a challenge, but that's pretty... More
