June 22, 2022. Wednesday. My wife and I stopped here for "linner" on the way back from Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Upon entering, the line had three people waiting and a side line had a robust take-out business. This restaurant is named after the late,...great Louis Armstrong, a trumpeter and vocalist born in New Orleans in 1901. I enjoyed the decor of Jazz and Blues musician paintings on the inside of the restaurant. My wife ordered the Gumbo, andouille sausage, shrimp, rice and Trinity ($8.99). I had the large fried catfish bites in buttermilk and cornmeal batter with tater tots and remoulade sauce ($16.99). We also ordered the 10" round of mac n' cheese topped with crushed tater tots ($12.99). It took about twenty minutes for our food to come out. I will admit they cook a mean tater tot here. Perfectly brown, crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful potato on the inside. The baked mac n' cheese topped with crumpled tater tots had a bacon taste to it that elevated it way above traditional macaroni and cheese. Unfortunately, my catfish bites were small and extremely dry. They had too much breading and were very dense. I wish this main entree had been better because I love some fried catfish. Maybe bigger fillets and less breading would help keep the fish moist? We paid a total of $38.97 for some small, dry catfish bites and pretty good side dishes. This food is very dense and filling so you might consider ordering a bit less than you normally would. That's why they offer small entrees.More

Where do I even start? The food was disgusting overall. I ordered a small catfish nugget basket. It was bland and cold. I ordered sweet potato fries...I received it cold and unseasoned. I ordered MacNCheese...It was MacNOil with a cheeselike breadcrumb topping...Ordered brisket and it...was flavorless. My kids did NOT like their sandwiches (Blackened Shrimp PoBoy, Andouille Sausage PoBoy, and the Shaved Chicken Sliders). The only thing that may have been worth a bite are the cajun tater tots...but even then, that came to us in such greasy bags. We looked forward to this meal and ended up throwing away almost half of it....we ate what we could get through because we were hungry. I wish I could get my money back.More

I’ve been a long time customer and still come back, but have some requests to bring back the “good old days” of Satchmo dining. Pre-pandemic, the tots were in a dedicated fryer- meaning customers who are celiac or have gluten allergies could still gorge on...their delicious tots. Once Satchmos shut their doors and then reopened with a limited menu, they took away the dedicated fryer and started mixing the flour items in with tots. Cue the tears. I had hoped that, this far out from limited operations, they would return to their old ways but alas, no tots for me or others like me. Also they removed red beans and rice from their menu entirely which is another travesty, in my humble (but accurate) opinion. That stuff was amazing. So here’s my heartfelt request to use a dedicated fryer and bring back red beans and rice!More

This place touts itself as being “voted best B.B.Q. in Flagstaff” until we found out there is only one other B.B.Q. place in Flagstaff, so I guess they had a 50/50 chance at getting it. We ordered the brisket, gumbo, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato...fries, coleslaw, and bread pudding. They did not offer any type of “sampler” plate, so we had to settle with this (there were two of us). They also did not include any sides with any of their meats - everything was charged for separately and it added up quick. The above mentioned lunch cost us nearly one hundred dollars! Let me repeat that - the above mentioned lunch for two people was one hundred dollars! The brisket was okay, but that’s about it - no noticeable smoke ring that you usually find in brisket. The gumbo was the same - just okay. An entire pint of gumbo contained exactly two shrimp. Must be a shrimp shortage? Coleslaw was unrecognizable as coleslaw and was absolutely the worst coleslaw I’ve ever tasted. The two types of B.B.Q. sauces that were on our table were mediocre at best. The one saving grace in this meal was the macaroni and cheese. It was actually pretty good. But for one hundred dollars? Are you kidding me? I have eaten at some of the finest cajun and B.B.Q. places throughout the south and I have never heard of being charged prices like this for this type of quality food! They must be pretty proud of their B.B.Q. here at Satchmo’s, but after eating here for myself, I have no idea why. The only reason I am giving this place a three-star (average) rating is because their staff was very friendly and as previously mentioned, the macaroni and cheese was decent. Save yourself a wad of cash and eat somewhere else in Flagstaff.More

A wonderful surprise as we stopped on our way back to Sedona from the Grand Canyon! The food was delicious, the wait staff was friendly and hard working. It is a small place but come with a big appetite.

My friend and I were vacationing in Flagstaff and tried this place because of online reviews while looking for a BBQ place. We shared burnt ends, pulled pork, baked beans, and the mac and cheese. It was all incredible. We had 1/2 pound meat plates...and it was very reasonably priced. Both meats were tender and juicy and they don't smother the pork in BBQ sauce which was nice. The mac and cheese was AMAZING when it was hot, and just as good cold the next morning.. The place itself was very low-key , but had a steady procession of locals picking up orders while we were there.More

Standing in line to place your order takes forever. Who wants a pound of tater tots? The pound of Mac and Cheese was less than appealing. The jambalaya was a TEN!!! I may be too old to enjoy this type of place.

Food/Taste/Flavor: 5/5 - Blackened SWAI fillet was on point with just the right amount of kick on the "catfish style" seasoning. The rice was a nice complement to offset the kick. 1/2 lb beef brisket has a good ratio of meat vs fat and can...be cut with a fork and spoon. The slider buns weren't impressive and sort of bland. They gave a sweet and spicy sauce to eat with it and both were interesting and delicious. The gumbo had a hint of bitterness that was surprising but great otherwise. Ambience: 4/5 - small cozy shop with some musical decorations. Definitely has seen some traffic based on the worn down marks on the floor Service: 5/5 - quick and to the point Value for price: 5/5 - would definitely come again if we're in Flagstaff!More

Would have never even known the location existed if it weren’t for previous reviews on TripAdvisor. I’m so glad we use TripAdvisor for recommendations. We had ribs, fried catfish bites, tater tots, and sweet potato fries. We really enjoyed our meals. Half rack of ribs...and small order of catfish bites was plentiful. Unless you love your carbs, fries and tots are shareable with 2-4 people. Staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. When traveling we always like to eat where the “locals” eat, and based on other guests, we found the right place.More

Exceptional BBQ! The beans have a rich smokey flavor, the potato salad and the coleslaw are our favorite sides. As far as main dishes are concerned, we highly recommend the ribs nd the pulled pork. Love that Satchmo's offers outdoor seating.

On our Route 66 road trip, my sister had found this restaurant to be an “iconic” stop. I looked it up on my must trusted TA, & found it was ranked #5 in Flagstaff, AZ. I thought it would be alright. Sign on the door...said to place order at counter before sitting at a table, & they would bring it to you. Looking at the menu, I realized they don’t serve “plates”. Everything is “a-la chart”, sides are priced separately, as are drinks. My sister & her hubby didn’t realize that until they were ordering. They had inside or outside seating. Paper table clothes & paper plates, yet gave you metal forks! This was the oddest restaurant I think I’ve ever been too. It wasn’t anything like we had expected. We got barbecue sliders, potato salad, Mac & Cheese & baked beans. The barbecue was just Okay with 2 mediocre sauces - sweet & spicy. The potato salad was, I’m sorry to say, some of the worst I’ve ever had! I couldn’t eat it. It was just too spicy for me - tasting a lot of horseradish in it. Baked Beans seemed to have horseradish in it too. The Best food. Item to our meal was the Mac & Cheese!! It was THE BEST!!! I don’t recommend this place, sorry.More

As we entered Flagstaff, my wife looked for places to eat and Satchmo's kept coming up, so we decided to try it. Walking up, it might be a place some people might skip by, but DON"T! It is GREAT! First of all, the staff was...super friendly walking us though the different items and answering all our questions and giving us great suggestions. I went with their suggestion of a blackened catfish on Jambalaya and my wife went with the Gumbo. Both meals were fantastic. As we ate, several times the staff came by to make sure everything was fine. This is a restaurant that everyone should be visiting.More

My husband had the burnt ends, I had the catfish...bites and sweet potatoes fries, and we shared the cornbread and Mac and cheese. With tip and two fountain drinks, we spent $62. Even so, we are looking forward to coming back during our next trip to Flagstaff!More

This place was so good!!! My whole party of 4 loved every bite. Guy who took our order was very friendly and helpful. We had the pulled pork, half rack of ribs, tater tots, coleslaw, corn bread, and Mac & cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious,...especially the warm tater tots and the huge, very cheesy, clearly homemade Mac and cheese. Would 100% be back if we were locals (we’re passing through on a road trip from CT). Back patio was shady and an overall nice place to sit. Mac and cheese, cornbread, and tater tots are must haves. I never write reviews of places but loved this place that much. If you’re craving some good BBQ and a friendly atmosphere.you’ll find it here!More
