I agree that thank God that the Picknelly Family and the owners of the Huke Lau decided to open up this Springfield MA landmark. The reopened restaurant has a wide open but German traditional feel and the food, especially the Schnitzel and German beers, are outstanding. Can be pricy for dinner, but lunch specials are budget beaters. Good food, great... More

It's is great to have variety in the areas where you go out to dine. This has German foods at their best- Start with a Giant German Pretzle with Mustards, then Bratwurst, knackwursts, Veal schnetzeltes, sauerbraten, Pork Shanks, and other entrees like King sized Prime Rib, 24-ounce T-Bone steaks, Duck, and lots of seafood and other specialties. You have to... More

Thanks for the nice words. We are glad that the place remains in operation and the traditions continue with a bit of 21'st century additions. It is always a good idea to leave room for dessert. Indian pudding is sadly being found in fewer and fewer establishments and we think that ours is one of the best versions of this... More

I went there for a few drinks with my wife when our favorite Brewery introduced a new beer. The place is very nice and the atmosphere is great too. However when I received my AMEX bill we discovered a second charge on my card that was hand written. We disputed the claim with AMEX (Don't leave home without it) and... More

Dear Harald, Just want to apologize for the overcharge, we don't typically make errors as such, in fact it's rather rare. Certainly I can stand by the integrity of my staff, but mistakes can happen. Once again I do apologoize for any frustration and would hope to see you again. Please send me your email as I may get further... More

First of all, if you look at the outside of this place, you would be very skeptical. It looks like a Dive from the outside. Do not let this fool you .... step inside. Rich dark wood, stained glass windows, marble bar, beautiful lighting. hundreds of steins. The décor is very inviting. We did not eat here, but came for... More

Thanks for sharing your impressions. It is nice to hear that our staff kept busy. The establishment is over 80 years old and recently had a bit of a make over. We have always prided ourselves in being clean. Next time try to enjoy a meal. Our menu is a mixture of German and new English food with a sprinkling... More

I grew up in Milwaukee with great German food and beer. I love the Fort (or is it the Student Prince... I never know) and it has all three things that I look for in a German restaurant: great food, great beer and great ambiance. Their sauerbraten is to die for and schnitzel is also great. Lots of beer selections... More

Thanks for your nice review! The recipe for our sauerbraten was published in Gourmet magazine (now sadly defunct). The booths were installed in the late 1940's and are still the most popular seating area. The formal title of the establishment is Student Prince. The name Fort was initially used to indicate the dining room area when it first opened, although... More

The Student Prince has been a favorite for a long time as it has been in Springfield, MA for many years. The new owners have made some improvements and updates but overall it appears the same with the dark oak paneling, German plates and steins adorning the walls and shelves. A group of nine met after work for dinner before... More

Thanks for your nice words! We have long prided ourselves in being able to respond to customers time constraints. The place has been updated, but remains the Student Prince. I will share your review with Marion, who is a long time valued veteran of our service staff. I am glad that you enjoyed your schnitzel with noodles (kind of a... More

Fantastic foodie experience. Excellent unique menu. We enjoyed the Brussels sprouts appetizer (best I've ever had) along two excellent German meals. Service couldn't have been better. Great recommendations on the wine and food. Can't wait to come back!

This was a great place to eat and taste what German food has to offer. Great beer to boot. If you are strolling around looking for a place to try, this is it.

My wife and I have gone to this restaurants several times when passing through Springfield, MA, and ate there again yesterday. The food is absolutely fantastic. We had two of their German veal dishes, along with cucumber salad and sweet and sour cabbage. And, they have a long list of European beers on tap. Also very reasonably priced. Finally, its... More

Whenever we have guests or customers in town, we always plan a dinner at the Fort. It is easily among the top German restaurants around. They have a wide menu and everything is always top shelf.
