Let me preface this with the fact that I live in Santa Fe and I have had the pleasure of eating at Izanami many times since they opened. If you are looking for a well curated, elevated, and exceptional dining experience with no holds barred,...Izanami is the place to go. I go to Izanami when I’m looking for an amazing experience and want to splurge and enjoy myself with no limits to what we can spend. We almost always ask for the Omakase experience, which I highly recommend. This is the chefs special choice and they will bring you whatever is freshest and most delectable that evening. Last time we went we had incredible yellowtail and salmon, and other raw fish to start. A wagyu beef plate with two kinds of raw beef, both American and Japanese and a hot stone to cook it on at our table. It was phenomenal, and it tasted amazing on its own or with one of the many sauces they brought for dipping. We were celebrating and the food and drinks just kept us so happy and satiated. The ribs were incredible, I couldn’t eat enough. The goat cheese and beet salad was perfectly light and flavorful. Chef Kiko really knows how to let the food speak for itself with delicate and gentle preparation that showcases each flavor profile so distinctly. The sake choices are wonderful and like nowhere else in town. We will continue to enjoy and celebrate evenings at Izanami. It can be romantic for 2 after a soak and massage or fun and festive for a small group of friends. Either way, let them serve you the most exquisite Japanese food in the area.More

This is our second visit at Izanami. We drove from Colorado Springs, CO just to have lunch at the restaurant. We had high hopes and very excited to be back. We ordered shabu-shabu, agadashi tofu, gyoza. The agadashi tofu was OK and the gyoza but...not special considering the price. The shabu-shabu was a great disappointment. They gave us two soup base that were the same sour and ponzu-like taste. Not the Japanese shabu-shabu we were expecting with two different soup-base and not ponzu sour. Even the dip was ponzu-based. We basically have sour ponzu soup and dip. Aside from being sour, it had no flavor at all. Very disappointing especially for the price you have to pay. The service was also not as good as the first time we were there. Based on some reviews I read, it seems the food could be excellent depending on what you order and could be a disaster. Before writing this review, I saw an almost similar review done in Jan 2021. Same bad experience on the shabu-shabu dish. So unless they changed their soup-base and improve the flavor, do not order shabu-shabu. It is a waste of money. I am sorry. Or better yet, they should just remove the shabu-shabu from their menu.More

Second time visiting Thousand Waves and we both had a high hope for Izanami restaurant. Ordered Shabu Shabu, Chirashi and sashimi. Chirashi and sashimi was OK, only 2 kinds of fish were used, no fish eggs, no tamago, no eel, this is not really chirashi...at all. (but at least fish quality was ok.) Chisrashi rice was cooked properly but I don't think they used sushi rice. Chirashi and sashimi - 3 star Shabu shabu was a big disappointment They brought 2 kind of broth - but both soy sauce base, very salty and no flavor. This is NOT Japanese shabu shabu, but more like Chinese style. They must have changed the chef Shabu Shabu - one starMore

This is the only restaurant that we have eaten on the patio while in Santa Fe. They have made the ambience as nice as possible and we had tons of heaters and blankets. We were very warm and comfortable. We aren't Sake drinkers, but we...enjoyed a bottle and tried many of the food items. The sesame noodles were a hit. We also had Tomahawk steak shared with 4 people. We had a few sides to fill in the gaps. The brussels sprouts were excellent, the dip trio with homemade veggie chips was so good we ordered a second one. The vegetarian in our group had the tofu bento box and it was a fun assortment of items. We thoroughly enjoyed having a delicious meal in a lovely setting. The matcha cheese cake and bread pudding were delicious. As close to "normal" dining out as we are going to get during Covid times.More

A friend and I had a late lunch at Izanami after a wonderful massage at 10,000 Waves Spa. We were intrigued by the sake list and wanted to experience something new. Our experience at the restaurant could easily have been a 5+, but the check-in...seating process was horrible! We had made a reservation 4 days before and when we arrived there was no hostess to check us in with about 6 other people waiting as well. Once she arrived, she did not even acknowledge us until we said we had a reservation. Even at that, it took another 10-15 minutes to be seated at a table (even though most were empty)! Now for the good stuff....our waiter (I think his name was Rob) was great! He took the time to explain the sake choices and answer questions about the menu. Although the lunch menu is limited, there were some great choices. The sake was excellent, the food was excellent and the outside seating was relaxing and fun. Very enjoyable once we got seated!More

This restaurant can be great one time and it can be mediocre the next. We have been getting takeout all summer and in the process learning what to order. The sure bets are the lobster ramen, and the pork ribs, but grill the ribs yourself...because the meat was dry on our most recent takeout as if they had been grilled a day or so ago. In the winter they had a noodle dish called a Hot Pot which was delicious but it is not on the summer menu. The dishes that are mediocre are the cucumber avocado salad, it is very bland, not special at all, the fried chicken, it is dry and overcooked, again as it if it was a left over, the silken tofu was a 2” square too small to share and looking nothing like the photo on the website, the meat bento box is good but it includes the boring cucumber avocado salad. Net net, it can be great and it can be disappointing which explains the huge variance in the reviews: it all depends on what you order, generally you will be safe with a noodle dish.More

An excellent Japanese food is served within the 10,000 Waves health and spa resort with a very authentic Japanese ambiance. We recommend to share Omakase chef’s tasting menu where portions are generous, and add two more dishes alla carte such as delicate mushroom medley and...another main dish. Service is excellent and ambiance thrilling. Our waitress recommended a very reasonably priced unfiltered sakè. Request to sit close to the waterfall, still outside yet more dramatic and private then sitting under a tent. Arrive early to appreciate the Japanese atmosphere in the main building and shop the main gift shop which offers genuine stuff at accessible prices.More

Thank you very much for your review! I am so glad that you enjoyed your experience. Sharing the omakase by the waterfall seating is my favorite as well. We hope that you can join us again soon!

The Silken Tofu was ok (well, I can do this) but the Izanami Trio ($16) of three veggies and three dips came with sadly old celery brown at the ends which was replaced on request for newer veggies. The Sashimi of the Day was salmon...while reportedly fresh arrived sans sliced ginger again appearing on request. The Smoked Pork Ribs were tasty and fell off the bones tender, but came with nothing else, so a bowl of rice ($6) was needed. Indeed, the restaurant has the best sake menu in town (draft beer was busted that night) and small tables with barely space for the sake cooler. Though reserving/dining early, we got a table overlooking a parking lot and adjacent to the nearby entry/exit with pretty loud banter of the staff. Dinnerfor 2 plus tip came to about $140. Tents outside were available for seating though some (lucky for us?) were seated at the busy entrance walkway. Nice hillside view as evening approached.More

We arrived in the early evening monsoon to find all hands on deck, including the chef, making sure diners in tents were not getting wet and everyone had warm blankets fresh from the dryer. The food, as always, was first class, but kudos to the...staff for performing so brilliantly under less than desirable conditions.More
