Based on a friend’s suggestion I was excited to try this student-run restaurant which is part of the Culinary Institute of America’s training program for aspiring chefs. Overall an excellent experience in a trendy looking restaurant set in San Antonio’s Pearl District. Each of our...four courses were well presented, a unique combination of fresh flavors, and tasty, though the dessert was my least favorite. I would also recommend you do the wine pairing even though ours was out of sync with the food. PS: don’t forget to order the bread; a YUMMY part of the meal.More

The uniqueness of Savor’s menu is what the Culinarily Institute dining experience is all about. The food is wonderful. The cooks, waiters and servers are in training, so one must be patient as they learn the business, to enjoy an incredible meal. An excellent experience...for us.More

We ate here for a date night. We made reservations in advance (highly recommended) as the place is small and seating is very limited. Arrived 15 minutes earlier and we were temporarily seated at the bar as they were still getting tables and staff organized....We were given complimentary drinks which was awesome. Fabian, the host, is absolutely incredible and we made sure everything was perfect. We opted for the four course menu. Each plate was plated beautifully. Lots of different and unique flavors in each dish. At the end of the meal, we were satisfied with what we ate. Overall, you can’t beat the service it’s literally among the best you’ll ever have in your life. You get to experience watching CIA students learn how to operate and cook in a fine dining setting. We learned so much just by being around and seeing how a fine dining restaurant is run which is one reason why you should come here because it’s truly an experience. Oh yeah, the food is pretty damn good too!More

This was a highlight of our trip....so glad we chose to take the leap. First of all, we were 45 minutes early and they seated us right away. Next our service (Benito) was at our table immediately taking drink orders and offering suggestions and letting...us know that he was there for whatever we needed. We chose the 3 course, but opted out of the appetizer and went with 2-4. Great choice. I had mussels, snapper and a chocolate torte (all three unbelievable). My wife went with saffron tomato rice balls, beef ribs and creme fritta (all delicious) - she also had the wine pairings with each course which were perfectly match with the food. Just wonderful. Would definitely do it again and we wish Benito all the luck in his future endeavors.More

It turns out that is the DINNER menu and at lunch time they only serve a fairly limited cafe / bistro luncheon menu which was fine but I was extremely disappointed in that I went expecting a very different experience. Both of us had the cannelloni, a salad and yucca fries. The cannelloni was tasty and decent-sized portion. The real standout was the gorgeous banana cream pastry dessert. See pic.More

Dined with another couple on a weekend evening. Made a reservation in advance, and was promptly seated upon arrival. Cozy restaurant with a nice view of the open kitchen. Plenty of staff (students) and a busy feel. Service was solid throughout the meal. I appreciated...the freedom to mix and match course selections. The food was mostly pretty good. The Crudo was quite a large portion and a little light on flavor. The mussels were tasty and good quality. The Gnocchi was good, and the chicken my favorite (though not spicy at all). The mixed drinks were also pretty good. Overall, a nice meal. Nothing mind blowing, but a very good evening out.More

Before restaurant week there was Savor, a restaurant staffed by students in their last semester at CIA. They moved from a larger space and changed their name from Nao to Savor. The larger space was just too much to be staffed with just students. And...that's what Savor is about. Both the front and back of the house are staffed by students, but still overseen by talented CIA staff. They all want to be chefs but have to take turns and work as waiters and waitresses as well. You can tell most would rather be in the kitchen, but it's good for them to gain perspective of the client facing team. We started with them Hamachi Crudo. The flavors were incredible and the presentation showed great care in plating. I then enjoyed the potato gnocchi in a tomato sauce. Very fresh flavors. For the entree I enjoyed the Yellowfish (Amberjack). A little small for an entree portion. And for dessert was a chocolate souffle with tangerine ice cream. The souffle was perfectly executed. We enjoy supporting the CIA and the newest batch of eager chefs. You don't tip here, but a 20 percent service charge is added that goes towards scholarships.More

This is the first time we went to Savor, but we used to go to Nao, also a CIA student run restaurant. We had the four course tasting menu. I had the salad. It was okay. My husband had the winter squash which was very...good. We both had the spinach risotto. I think there was too much spinach in it or it could have been pureed. Our third courses were excellent. I had the steak and my husband had tuna. Lastly, we had the chocolate souffle. YuM! It was amazing! Tip- they ran out before we were done eating so get there relatively early if you want the souffle. Overall, we'll definitely go back again! Check the menu on the website to make sure that you'll like the dishes.More

I think the quality of cooking and service will depend on how experienced are the team. When we visited they were only a few days into their training and have a lot to learn. Our waitress was wonderfully friendly and polite but really needs some...more fine dining experience and knowledge. Little things like placement of glass wear and remembering cutlery is required will need a little more training. The food is well presented but Chef should check that hot food is served hot and not sit at the pass for too long and the beef would be improved with some sauce.More

. Savor is the student operated restaurant of the Culinary Institute of America San Antonio. Students work all positions both front & back of the house. The menu is prix fixe with a choice of either 3 or 4 courses.(very reasonable prices) All courses offer...several items to choose from. We were seated by the "open kitchen which affords a great view of the chefs at work. Our waitstaff person was personable, and knowledgeable; we asked many questions. The food was expertly prepared and beautifully plated, Delicious! A+rating from the time we walked into the restaurant until our departureMore

We chose the four course three wine flight tasting (we skipped the dessert wine). Food was outstanding and expertly served. Each coursecworked, the portions were good sized and the food delicious. Went he next night to one of San Antonio's best downtown restaurants and in...comparison, the food at Savor was better (we even had two similar fish dishes to compare and Savor won hands down). Dining room is a bit crowded though and it would have nter sting to meet one of the student chefs and had more interaction with the student servers.More

Trying the CIA restaurant in San Antonio has been on my list for a while, as my experience at the main campus in NY state was outstanding. I should divide my rating in two, based on our evening. First, the food gets a solid five...stars. Everything we tried was plated nicely, well prepared and delicious. Portions were quite generous and we enjoyed the variety of menu options for each course. Unfortunately, the service did not live up to the food. We got turned around in the Pearl and had to call to get specific directions to the restaurant. We ended up arriving about 10 minutes before our reservation. The man at the host stand said, "Well, you're in luck. We just had a cancellation, so I can seat you as a walk-in." Huh? Ok, whatever. He seated us and for the next ten minutes no one even looked in our direction. No greeting, no acknowledgment at all. Two other couples came in and were seated and greeted within a couple of minutes. We went back to the host stand, where we were told we had called and cancelled our reservation. Uh, no...but he continued to argue the point. Finally he went and talked to a server, who looked in our direction but then continued with another table. After several more minutes, we were preparing to walk out when the server finally came to the table, apologizing. He seemed extremely ill at ease, which only partially improved during the course of dinner. Several of the students interacted with us, bringing drinks, bread, etc. and all seemed more comfortable. It is obvious that dealing with the front of the house is not this person's forte. There were other service lapses...our first courses were presented along with my second course, called our "shared plate". The food runner took off before we could say anything. Later the second courses arrived, and the food runner's comment was, "Well that shouldn't have happened. I need to find out what's going on." Again, she left in a hurry. We had no silverware for the second course, and had to flag down a different server to get some. Part of what made our first CIA experience so fun was getting to talk to the students and hear about their adventures in school, but we had precious little of that here, because the service was so haphazard. There was no real evidence of smooth teamwork, as proved when we received the check and saw a charge for two drinks we did not order. All in all, the many service glitches marred what should have been a delightful dining experience.More

This is an amazing restaurant. As an educator, I have a special place in my heart for those who are learning. Clearly there is a lot of supervision here. The four course meal with wine pairing was excellent. Pretty much everything we ate was beyond...great. In addition the area around this restaurant is a great place to visit for a social evening. I cannot recommend this place enoughMore

The boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary dinner and I’m very happy that we did. We had a reservation for Wednesday evening at 7:30pm but called to change it to 8pm bc we were running late and they were very nice and accommodating....It was our first time eating at a CIA restaurant and I was so excited. Attire of the guests ranged from casual to fancy. Since it was our anniversary, I wore something that made me feel a bit overdressed upon walking in, but I got over it after a while. We both opted to do the three course meal for $39 per person. My bf was not interested in any foods from the First Course so he asked to get foods from the Second Course, Main Course and Desserts, while I picked from the First Course, Second Course and Main Course— thankfully they accommodated for that as well! The oysters were good but I would like to try something difference from their First Course menu. The risotto was AMAZING— I honestly enjoyed it more than risotto I’ve had from Hell’s Kitchen in LV. We usually do not order tartare but my bf actually enjoyed their tartare. We both love quail so we were scrapping the plate for as much quail yolk as possible until it was time for the plates to be picked up. As for the hanger steak, the pave potatoes were the best/most memorable part of the dish. I was so excited about my cast iron young chicken bc it was my first cast iron dish ever lol and I was not disappointed. My bf originally ordered the Peaches and Cream for dessert but they had run out of peaches so they notified us and asked if oranges would be okay instead. I honestly enjoyed the cinnamon cookie on the side, more than the oranges and cream. But I did like how the warm dessert contrasted the coolness of the oranges and cream. Service was a 5/5. The restaurant definitely lived up to my expectations. We would definitely like to return next time we are in town and try their other dishes!More

Amazing! We really enjoyed going to NAO with its South American flavors and pisco sours but its long menu probably was hard to master. Not Savor. The 3 or 4 items tasting menu are prepared to perfection. Very fresh PEI oysters with different sauces, seared...scallops with saffron risotto and veal ossobuco with coli flour pure. What a meal! Wine selection is short but solid. The ambiance was model chic; it felt like some restaurants in NYC. Service was flawless and we even got a kitchen tour. One of our favorite restaurants in San Antonio.More
