You can stop early in the AM and pick up ready-made burritos. Great selection and quality. Coffee also available. Note that this place has closed temporarily due to the pandemic.

We saw posters for a concert that my husband was interested in and we happened to be staying in Kohala about a 10 minute drive away on the night of the concert. I bought tickets online and we enjoyed the Toby Walker show and loved...the food and staff at Blue Dragon. Their philosophy is about community, supporting local producers, and recycling. On an island that doesn’t have a comprehensive recycling programme (I realized there are transportation logistics and costs but it really hurts me to throw out aluminum foil and cans that we don’t pay a deposit on, clean paper and compostables) but Blue Dragon and their HUB programme deals with all that - the plates and any food waste are all composted. Service was lovely, good food and drinks, affordable pricing, open air performance venue which was very nice on a warm Hawai’ian evening. We had a wonderful evening and would happily go back for a meal anytime and also recommend this place. Awesome!More

A very nice experience. Laid back casual dinner evening with music and ample room dance floor. We danced to Hawaiian music and enjoyed ourselves greatly. Our food entree's were good and we were pleased. Menu is limited to a degree, but is weighted more towards...fresh fish and pork. Service was quite nice. Wait times were short. I was pleased to see that there was 9 beers (all local) on tap! They do have a full bar with wine. Prices to be in the mid-range. They do charge you a cover charge to enter the premises to help cover the fee of the musician. Good Experience, no problems.More

Re-opened last October, under new management. Easy, clean, staff happy to serve. Grab and go. Warm personality and very good egg breakfast sandwich. Very quality and inexpensive, a word not often used on this Island of Hawai'i. Convenient, local, try it. A good way to...avoid $21.00 for a hotdog and $15.00 for a glass of puke wine at the Mauna Lani.More

The entertainment of John Keawe and ohana were awesome! Unfortunately, even though you pay a cover charge now, people talked soooo loud that it was hard to hear the music. We were with another couple. My husband and I ordered Mai Tais and they were...the worst we have ever had. When we asked the server to add some dark rum (always have floating dark rum on the top of a Mai Tai), she begrudgingly took them back to the bartender but the drinks still tasted horrible. The sandwiches were good but served on small paper plates. We were only given forks and then even had to ask for more napkins. Our server basically ignored us until she finally came with the bills which were screwed up.More

We met 4 other couples who are friends and were able to sit at the same table. Food was very good and service was excellent. We sat on the patio so we could talk and still hear the music as background. The setting was lovely...with an open air ceiling and roofed rim area around edge of room in case of rain. I appreciated the excellent sound system and had a warm welcome from the staff and musicians.More

Great Dance Venue under the Stars: Local Dance Bands are awesome and dancing by locals and visitors enthusiastic, spirited and fun. Couples and solo dancing welcome. Tapas menu works well with jumping up and dancing as the mood and song choice prompt. With an improvement...in food tastiness, I would rate it a "5".More

I think you go here to see good, local talent, under the stars, in the warmth of the Hawaiian Aloha spirit! Last night my husband and I really enjoyed hearing the delightful slack key music of John Keawe, at The Blue Dragon Tavern. He was...wonderfully entertaining, and was occasionally joined by his gorgeous wife, Hope (lovely harmony); as well as two of their beautiful granddaughters, performing hula. We gather The Blue Dragon has recently undergone some renovation; but this was our first visit. While our waitress was attentive, several order/food mistakes were made, and our food was less than noteworthy. We started off with the Blue Dragon’s version of Thai Spring Rolls, which tasted more like frozen Costco Taquitos! For dinner, my fish tacos (2 - catch of the day- Striped Marlin) we’re just OK - the fish tasted fresh, but they were quite bland... My husband had the Fish & Chips (also the Striped Marlin), which were ok, but not anything special. Bottom line - the food is ok, but not special. Hearing a renowned Hawaiian artist essentially in his hometown was priceless. Some other reviews seem to think the food/timing/selections will get better. Hopefully so. I loved that they use bamboo plates! We had a great time, and wish them all the best! Support local talent!!❤️More

We were thrilled to learn that the Blue Dragon had reopened. We read the reviews and were prepared for something that was less than the old BD had been. But even with our lowered expectations we were profoundly disappointed with our experience in early November....We were told that the $5 cover charge applied because the new BD was “all about the artists”. Well, evidently not because the local female solo artist who performed was plagued by repeated sound tech issues. Her monitor kept cutting out. The person doing the tech was cutting across the stage to attempt to fix it. It was disruptive. The artist was very talented and she had clearly put a lot of work into her performance. We felt badly for her. The menu is pub food. A serious step down from the former BD’s varied menu with locally sourced food. The atmosphere was grim. A bare concrete floor. A few lights on the walls. No uplighting on the palm trees. No lighting on the outside. It was so dark that we had to use our phones to read the menu. It looked like some had thrown in some tables and chairs and thought “Yep. That should do it.”. The food itself was okay but not great. Our server was indifferent to borderline rude when we asked questions about the food menu and the drink selection. I really hope that the operators read some of these reviews and make some improvements. It is such a fantastic venue. We would like to see them succeed. But we wont be returning unless things improve.More

We were huge fans of the old Blue Dragon, with it's cleverly-designed decor and wide range of gourmet food at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, after the long wait for them to reopen, it's just a pale shadow of its former self. To be fair, the host...at the door warned us that the menu is now pub food, and as such, it was acceptable, but disappointing compared to the former great cuisine. The ambience has also slid seriously. The uplights that used to illuminate the palms and give a sunset glow to the room are burned out, and the stage lighting is also inadequate. The result is a gloomy, cement-floored space with little atmosphere. We were there to hear John Kiawe, and although we could only see him dimly, he was excellent, and it was good to see that the "Musiquarium" concept remains alive. We firmly hope that as the reopening issues get resolved and the Blue Dragon finds its wings again, the venue will recover its magic, and the kitchen will work its way back toward the great menu that we enjoyed so much in the past.More

We went to the Blue Dragon with friends for dinner, what a great time. The venue is open air with no roof, lots of stars. Food was very good, our waitress was spot on, and the music was perfect!!

This was a favorite place of ours, before it closed, for too long, due to a sinkhole and other problems. We were delighted to see that it had reopened... Risen from the dead ! It is still a great open air experience. We were there...on a night that John Kiawe was performing slack key ... Wonderful ! However... The dining experience however, is not the same. It used to be fine dining... Now it is more pub grub fare. This made me sad, as the food was very good. Not bad, but not memorable. They don't serve coffee. The service was friendly, but not very efficient. Overall, go for the music. Not the food.More

We went to the Blue Dragon last night to hear John Keawe and were not disappointed. The food was great, service friendly, and the music was awesome! Food: we started with the onion rings with dragon sauce (sort of a mayo+sriracha sauce). The batter on...the rings was light and crunchy and the sauce added just the right amount of heat. Then we shared the tomato salad and steak bites with salsa verde. The tomato salad was dressed with a li hing lillikoi vinaigrette that added a mild sweet/sour flavor to the tomatoes that complemented them. The steak bites were perfectly grilled. For dessert we had vegan pistachio ice cream and fresh apple pie. Since it was vegan, the ice cream was coconut milk based, and though the taste was unexpected at first, it really grew on us the more we ate. I would order it again. The apple pie was amazing - perfect crust and the apples were not at all mushy. Overall, it was a fantastic meal. Service: our server was very friendly and efficient, and didn't mind that we ordered over time, rather than appetizers and entree all at once. As in other reviews, there is still some confusion with what food went to what table but it was fine and we got what we ordered. Music: John Keawe, what more can I say? I love his music and was so excited to be able to hear him play live just up the road from where we are staying. His wife, two granddaughters, and 4 other women at an adjoining table danced hula to some of his songs. I've been places where there is one hula dancer, but this was such a treat to see six women dancing together and they were all right in sync with each other.More

We went to have dinner and see live music. However, the band was over 45 minutes late is starting so we could not stay to see the show as we had kids us to get home. The food was just okay and was across the...board very spicy and too spicy for the kids with us. The do not provide any silverware other than chopsticks, which we found strange. There is a cover charge of $10 per person for the band which we did not know about in advance.More

I love that the Blue Dragon is back! An open air venue of food, drink, and music to feed your soul! You won't be disappointed. Enjoy the beach up north and then finish off your day at the Blue Dragon for dinner, drinks, and a...dance. The live music is the feature and the staff are positive, inviting, and willing to hear your suggestions to make your experience satisfying and complete.
