Golden Crown Bakery has the most delicious pizzas ever, plus an amazing assortment of baked goods. Even more fun is the vending machine out front where you can get your favorite biscochitos, green chile bread or whatever else you desire!
The smell when you walk in is of warm bread, we got a cookie for free, definitely worth your while if you're in the area.
We've eaten here several times over the years & always liked it. Not totally happy with how they're currently set up...you place your order at a kiosk now & pay at the kiosk with a credit card, then wait for a text saying your order...is ready. You then go back in to pick up your own order, & when finished eating you clear your own table. No interaction with employees anymore, which we don't like. And when you're paying, it automatically prompts you to choose a tip amount, beginning with 15%...for doing your own ordering, pickup, getting your own drinks, clearing your own table. And prices were noticeably higher than previously, when you were actually served by real people. Food is still good (although pizza toppings were more sparse than before), but their new idea of 'service' isn't my cup of tea. Oh, and they 'lost' our friends order (even though it's all automated now), so they didn't get their pizza until well after we'd finished ours & they went back in to ask what was taking so long.More
I had marked this place as a possibility for lunch, so decided to try it. The first impression from the outside may scare you off, but don’t let it. You order at the counter. We each tried one of the sandwiches (you can choose from...about five or six types of bread) and they were well stuffed and delicious. We sat outside where it was very relaxing. I also ordered an apricot empanada (they have several varieties) and two cappuccino biscochitos and two chocolate wedding cookies. The clerk actually threw in two original biscochitos free of charge. All were delicious, except the wedding cookies were average.More
We stopped by for breakfast empanadas and we’re lucky enough to speak with the 80 year old owner. The food is delicious because he puts so much joy into cooking. The fruit empanadas were still warm and such a delight. Not easy to eat in...the car if you’re driving, so eat before you drive if you’re going far. This was a worthy stop.More
What a neat little find. Leaving the NM Museum of Natural place near lunchtime, and it said ‘open’, so I ventured in. That’s usually how I find most new eating venues. Situated in a rickety old building just outside Old Town, it’s far enough off...the beaten path to be relatively discreet. Inconspicuous, however, doesn’t mean it can’t be found. An old-fashioned neighborhood bakery since 1972, with an oven that says 1888 on it! Father (now 87) and son run the business. My type of place. The person at the counter was super friendly, certainly knew how to upsell, and knew the products very well. Turns out this place has various loaves of breads made without trans-fats, empanadas (raspberry, blueberry, apricot, pumpkin, sweet potato, apple, cherry, strawberry, lemon, etc.). I asked if they also make savory empanadas, but they didn’t understand what I was talking about. The answer is that they only make sweet empanadas, four types of bizcochitos, cookies, pizzas (with blue corn dough, peasant dough or the famous New Mexico green chile dough), sandwiches, smoothies, milkshakes (they are known for their famous coffee milkshake), etc. I was offered a free warm bizcochito to try out while waiting for my sandwich to be made. At that time of the day (a bit after noon) they were already out of several things. I wanted the rye bread, and they were out, they were also out of pumpkin, and sweet potato empanadas. They cultivate their own herbs and vegetables for use in their salads, sandwiches and pizzas. In a temperature controlled indoor environment, utilizing state-of-the-art aquaponic techniques they grow several varieties of lettuce as well as fresh basil. You can’t get any fresher than that! There is parking in the back, which is rare in this part of town. Outdoor as well as indoor seating. Guy Fieri has visited this place and loved the New Mexico Green Chile Bread which has a beautiful orange hue and a bit of a kick when you eat it. Of course, several people visit only based on that. I have to come back to try out the blue corn bizcochitos, their pizza, and the rye bread. Looking forward to it. A must tryMore
Spring mix is unedible, flavour and texture wise. Please, please, offer iceberg, romaine, butter, green leaf or red leaf instead as an option. I"m not terribly picky just cannot *stand* sping mix either texture or flavour wise, and am searching out tasty salad since all...yhe good salad bars closedMore
Took out a half dozen empanadas (different flavors but the sweet potato or pumpkin - not sure which) was my favorite. Also got some Mexican wedding cookies & biscochitos which were terrific (again personally I did the traditional flavors). Service was excellent. Staff were very...patient and customers as well. Cute patio outside. Loved seeing all the masks being worn.More
Really good food. Friendly people. Loved sitting on the patio and eating our pizza. They gave us a cookie to try for our wait. Everything tasted fresh and really good. One of the pizza's from their menu on the website was not available because all...the ingredients were not in season....Love that although I was looking forward to trying that particular one. A couple people in our group tried the milkshakes also and they liked them. I would recommend this place and will go back. It was good food and a relaxed experience.More
Stopped here for a late lunch on our way to Arizona! When you walk in it smells of sweet cinnamon! Then you see all the baked sweets! Yum! We had sandwiches and they were delicious along with the fresh brewed flavored teas! The staff was so...nice! We bought some sweets for the road!More
We used their easy online ordering system and picked up at their counter just inside the front door. Service was excellent, friendly. Just figure that order requests should leave an extra 30 minutes for pickup , especially at busy times. The pastrami sandwich was our...favorite, as well as their pizzas with excellent crusts and fresh vegetables on top. Very tasty pastries, so bring some home for breakfast next morning. An easy 20 minute walk from old town if you don’t have a car, Outdoor dining available in front on a quiet street. Good parking lot available.More
This place didn’t disappoint. It’s a small, neighborhood bakery that serves pastries, cookies, empanadas, salad and pizza. The blue mess crust was delish as was everything really. Very little seating here, a few tables along the wall inside and several tables outside with dogs welcome....It was a great meal.More
Great sandwiches. Wonderful pizza. The blue corn meal crust pizza is marvelous. Super nice folks. Very cool outside dining patio as well. The biscochitos are wonderful too. This place knows what they're doing, and they're doing it very well!
My fiancé and I stayed at a VRBO directly across the street and were excited to visit here. Unfortunately, we showed up right when they opened so there wasn’t any green chile bread to try so we just bought a couple empanadas and 2 types...of cookies. My favorite was the lemon empanada. We came back again a few days later, no bread so we didn’t get to try it, but the young lady working the counter was wonderful and welcoming. Hopefully next time we’ll get to try it.More
