As wonderful as everyone says! Every part of the evening was delicious, from the bread and olive oil to the dessert to top it all off.

Valter’s Osteria had all the makings of a superb experience, ambiance, decor and good service, but was let down by the food, the actual reason one goes to a restaurant. The menu is extensive, too much for great food and with the daily specials on...top it is questionable how accurate the descriptions are given by the wait staff. Surely it isn’t beyond their ability to have a printed daily special menu, on a blackboard or printed? This way it gives the clientele a chance to cogitate over what might be the best choice. The duck breast with pear was excellent, the veal with mushrooms tasted as thought the sauce was not home made, not good enough for this type of establishment. The Risotto of the day was described as having caper berries in, not one to be found asparagus instead, and under seasoned. Desert of fresh peaches with honey were hard under ripe and largely tasteless. The chef preparing the peaches should have known how hard they were and pulled the dish, sadly not and at $25 simply unacceptable. From the number of large tables eating the same courses there is a large percentage of business diners here, probably on expense accounts, so not caring too much about cost versus quality. Having spent 5 weeks in Italy this summer Valter’s food doesn’t come close to the humblest Trattoria, in Tuscany, Alessandria or Emilia-Romagna. I suspect Valter would be disappointed at the quality of the dishes we were served, 20% success rate wouldn’t pass any exam, as I said ambiance 10 out of 10 food 5 at best.More

On every visit to Salt Lake City I never miss having a dinner at Volters. This visit was very good, but a bit disappointing. Volter was not present at the time we had dinner, but we understand he can not always be their. The started...soup with mushrooms and and beans was outstanding. I am a big fan of spagetti carbonara and chsoe that as my main dish. The pasta had vitually no flavor. You could not tates any of the pancetta. I had to add salt and pepper to the pasta which I normally would not have to do. My associate had the seafood chapino which was excellent.More

We visited Salt Lake City during our 7 National Park tour and had researched where to eat near our restaurant. We were lucky to get a last minute reservation and it was well worth the effort. Reviews didn’t let us down, it was a wonderful...experience. The only negative was we had a Caesar salad for 2 made at our table that wasn’t up to par, the lettuce was limp and the salad had no taste. Would not recommend to t especially for $30.00. But the service and the rest of the food and wine was excellent.More

Amazing! Not just the food, but the whole experience! The staff was so attentive, we never felt rushed and we were also never left waiting. The pasta sampler was amazing. The lasagna was so good too! The honey lemon gelato is the best! We loved...the little touches as well, like the bruschetta and the drinking chocolate & biscotti. Valter’s is easily our new favorite restaurant!More

We went all out and had a lovely dinner at this fabulous place. Luigi, our server, took such good care of us as he carefully served up the plates at the table. Finny, one of the hosts, was able to order a beautiful bouquet for...our table when the florist cancelled. Everything was delicious! We started with an antipasto of melon, prosciutto, and a fig. Then a pasta sampler, which had a variety of lovely sauces and pastas and then two entrees, (we should have shared one, we were so full by then) the special halibut and the chicken piccata. We topped off the dinner with the gelato, honey and sea salt dessert. We also had a bottle of wine. Very expensive for all, but it was a special occasion so we didn’t mind. If we went again, we would order the caesar salad for two, split an entree and skip dessert because they bring every guest a lovely tiny cup of delicious warm chocolate and biscotti. We enjoyed the experience.More

This was our favorite restaurant when we lived in SLC. Returned after over 5 years for our anniversary dinner, and it was still AMAZING. The menu is incredible and very difficult to decide from as there are SO many delicious choices. Everything is very rich...and tasty...from the appetizers, to the main dishes to dessert...and the biscotti that comes with a Demitasse of chocolate...YUM. WE've tried many things on the menu...all great. My husband had the Halibut special and I chose the Salmon in mustard sauce...Oh my... He also had an heirloom tomato, artichoke, burrata appetizer that was to die for. And the bread...oh the bread!!! No idea what they do differently, but it is the absolute best bread you've ever had. Service is top[ notch...ask for Eduardo...although we've never had bad service :)More

Beautiful meal. Atmosphere is nice. It the food is knockout good. Very heavy. My boyfriend and I made the mistake of each ordering an appetizer because we showed up super hungry but we ended up being too full to fully enjoy the rest of our...meal! The food is just delicious. Very fresh tasting. Our server was wonderful and offered great, definitive suggestions when I was struggling to make a decision. Overall an awesome experience.More

OMF. It was such a wonderful experience. It was recommended by a friend and it is the top Italian restaurant.. if you can ask for Mr. JEM and Ms. CLAUDIA. We had Jem as our server and everything he suggested was topnotch. Every appetizers and...entrée was delicious. Claudia was so attentive if and when we needed anything. We never had to ask for anything. The entire staff throughout had such a synchronize service and presentation. The food was plated in front of us with a great explanation. Food was delicious and the menu is very creative. The most soft bread was served with blended Garlic Caper Olive oil. Yummm. Oh and do do do ask for the GELATO. You would want that.. I saw almost every table order one. JEM made the best presentation when serving us the Gelato. I had the best experience. Would definitely recommend. Thank you Jem and thank you ClaudiaMore

Took me a couple tries to get a reservation, as it is very popular....and for good reason. So glad I persevered, as my daughter and I loved it. Took a girlfriend and she was thrilled. Have ordered take-out and it is great, but miss the...dining room. The ambience is fantastic, the service is incredible, and the food is wonderful. Can't wait until the Covid restrictions are lifted and I can enjoy dining-in and seeing Valter roaming the room. Highly recommend.More

This restaurant is run like a classic 5 star restaurant. Staff levels are high; there is always someone nearby to assist and everyone is attentive. Our server offered us a glass of wine from the selection of bottled wines when the selections by the glass...were not adequate. The maitre d' checked in with us - a rarity, these days. The bread arrived warm, as it should, but it was the thin, crispy crust undistinguished white bread. It was served with a bitter anchovy and oil concoction that I asked to be removed from the table. The simple green salad was excellent. My wife's scoglio di mare: the taste of the seafood was overpowered by the tomato sauce. I ordered the osso bucco special and the wait staff seemed genuinely excited by my choice. Unfortunately, I have had better (in Oklahoma City). True, the meat was falling-off-the-bone-tender but the meat was also a little dry on the palate. The sauce had minimal taste and was not balanced well. The tiramisu was good but I would want a little more marsala in the zuppe inglese and a little more espresso in the ladyfingers. For a comfortable haute cuisine experience, the wait staff of this establishment carry the day. Unfortunately, I am assuming that the clientele cannot hold the kitchen to high standards either because they are transients or the regulars have just not been exposed to balanced, expert cuisine. Also, the prices of the menu cannot be justified by what comes out of the kitchen. We are fortunate to be able, on occasion, to select whatever we want from a menu without regard to cost. But, as an example, paying seventy five dollars for a plate of simple cacio e pepe (that contains four cheeses (!) instead of the traditional pecorino romano) borders upon disgusting. Also, the liquor prices are quite high, but that is where a restaurant makes its profit and there is the large front room staff to consider. By all means eat here for a great experience or get-together, but scale down your gourmandise expectations.More

The service was outstanding. Love the atmosphere, but the food was hit and miss. We started with their specialty virgin drink. It was good but too sweet for our tastes. Then we had the tossed caesars salad, made table-side. This was the highlight of our...meal. I would go back just for it - and certainly will. It was off the charts amazing but you better love garlic, as we do.My only issue was he made a whole bowl full, piled our plates, then threw out the rest. We would have loved him to leave the leftover. It really is very very good. But on to dinner. We tried the four pasta sampler. Some was good, some not so good but again - too sweet for the most part. Was surprised that what they offer as a sampler did not represent their best effort. I had Carbonara. Having lived in Italy I have high standards for this favorite but it didn't even meet a marginal level. It was just not very good. There was little flavor, and the sauce was watery and just not appetizing. Sorry. Ate very little of it. My wife had a chicken specialty and it was pretty good but not something we would order again. I will mention that they bring out delicious bread and an amazing dip that you could just drink. But once again, you better love garlic. Given the amazing reviews we went with high expectations and felt very let down. We had a fun time but wish someone could have told us what to order, other than the waiter. For the high price we were certainly disappointed.More
