Great little cafe buried in the depths of the old Chateau. Great soups! Good burgers too... Loved the chips. Good lunch stop over... Well priced and good coffee!

Warm and friendly staff. Coffees and hot chocolates were delicious but....seeing a pie warmer on one of the tables and cakes/ sandwiches in a fridge alongside $20 mains on a menu suggests there is a identity crisis. Lots of potential but not quite hitting the mark just yet.

The cafe is attached to and part of the Chateau Tongararo hotel although it is situated on the periphery and is accessible to all, and non residents of the hotel are welcomed. It has a good standard and selection of cakes and snacks and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

The Chateau Tongariro’s Pihanga Café provides good quality, pub-type food in a warm and bustling setting. However, it does pay to book, as it can get very busy – at any time of the year.

rather than eat in the hotel restaurant, we chose to eat in this less formal venue. Although we enjoyed the food and the service was good, the room ws let down by its decoration which gave the effect that you were eating in a old fashioned municipal building. It was so offputting ttah we wouldn't have eaten there again .

Theres not much to choose from food wise at the hotel - the Silver Service dining room, this cafe or the pub down the road that does burgers and pizzas. We chose the Pihanga - I was a bit let down by its location in the hotel - its a journey you have to go through several floors to get... More

Being attached to the Chateau I thought this place would be better. But honestly it was over priced for a very basic meal. I paid $5 for my 'hot' chocolate it was luke warm, when I asked them to reheat it, I got the death stare. Yes they were quite busy but shortcuts isn't the way to go. Also my... More

We were showing friends from the UK around NZ and it seemed only right to detour and show them our very own Chateau. We stopped in for a drink on a fairly gloomy day and found it very quiet inside. The decor was quite plain and not what I'd expected from the Chateau. We headed off after our drinks. I... More

The basics were there but didn't deliver. My lamb shank was large and tender, but sauce bland and basic and hard carrot, zucchini, and mash with lumps. The vindaloo had little meat and not as tasty as should be. Disappointed and gave feedback on how more attention to flavour could make a bid difference.
