Perfect lunch: tasty plentiful food & excellent service! Staying in local masía just out of Ullastret and whilst visiting the village for our daily bread we noticed Can Quel.. bustling from early morning with people having coffee and pastries in the sun so thought we would try for lunch. So glad we did. Excellent choice of food in terms of quality, range and price. Food came very quickly and everything we ordered was delicious (in no particular order mushroom croquettes, calamari, bacalau salad, sausage, ribs, tomato and burrata, aubergines and garlic shrimp… and in a distinctly un-Spanish way.. lots of vegetables and salad with the dishes!) Couldn’t single out a favourite and can only assume that, given our random choices, everything else would be equally as tasty! Less than €70 for 7 large plates, bread, 1 bottle rosé and 2 bottles of water. Please pop in and try.. you won’t regret it!

On the way back from golf, we stopped here with friends. We had made a reservation and got a nice table on the terrace. The restaurant is right on the road, but there is little traffic. All 4 of us had the Menu del Dia for under €20 and it was very tasty. The menu was only in Catalan, but the very helpful waiters helped with the translation. Parking at the restaurant is a bit difficult, but there is a large car park at the entrance to the town. About 200 m from the restaurant. We will definitely come back

We ate there yesterday and it was a great surprise. We ate very very good with typical food ( I loved specially the beet with cheese sauce and Pig handles with almond sauce…and all the desserts we ate!). The price is good (133€ 3 adults and 2children). I will pay it again for the great meal, treat and site!

Unbelievable bad attention, we arrived at 12 noon, August hot and wanting something fresh and maybe tapa. After a long wait a gentleman came out and told us that he could not attend us because the food was already prepared and were not personal. I won't even let us open our mouths. Incomprehensible quarrel. Apart from many dirty tables and full of flies. With his bread he eats it. Obviously we're not coming back.

Beautiful environment. Very inviting terrace, correct interior. Kindness on the part of all the staff. Simple food but of very good quality and generous quantities. Price perhaps a little high, but understandable given the current conditions of raw materials. To highlight a white wine from the house (Cooperativa Garriguella) that is very acceptable and well priced. That is to say; Recommended without a doubt, also the town is small but very beautiful.

Emilio and his team were fantastic. Bar Quel catered for twenty people and provided a fantastic meal for us. Everything was fresh and there was more wine than we could drink. This restaurant is a little gem and my wife and I will be going back when we are in the area.

I visited with my husband and brother-in-law for our evening meal. The place looks lovely and has a homely and authentic Spanish feel to it. The hosts couldn’t be any nicer, especially the man who served us. He apologised for his basic English, but in fact he spoke very well, which helped us a great deal as our Spanish is basic. He had such a lovely, positive and friendly attitude as well. They started by serving bread and when we asked about butter we were told they had some good aioli... he wasn’t lying, it was fantastic! We enjoyed it so much they brought out extra bread and we had extra aioli with our main. The croquette started we’re delicious - especially the mushrooms ones! They were served with a fresh salad and we were all impressed. We all had steak for mains, again, delicious. Our waiter said they could cook it a bit more if we wanted, which was a very nice and accompanying offer, but there was no need to cook it any more. To finish I had tiramisu, husband had chocolate mouse and brother-in-law had the white chocolate cake/pastry type thing... they were all great but the white chocolate was by far the best! Unfortunately we were so busy enjoying the great food that I only remembered to take a photo of the starter. I would definitely recommend going here and I hope we get the chance to visit again in future.

We stayed in Ullastret with some close Catalan friends who have a place there. While my friends were off to a nearby market, I walked a short distance to Can Quel restaurant. It was the second time I visited this restaurant having stopped the day before for some beverages. In this case, it was breakfast. I had a couple of cups of excellent coffee and a tortilla (Spanish Omelet). The tortilla was served hot, unlike many places where the food sits under a warming lamp. Service was very good. I sat outside in the patio area with a golden retriever and enjoyed looked at this old village while having a good breakfast. Hopefully, I will get a chance to visit again.

We decided to stop here for a drink. the service was so friendly that we had a look at the menu. the squid was a special so we ordered. had a great bottle of local wine, croquettes, salads, pig cheeks, rabbit, steak, veal and chips during our time in Ullastret. one waiter speaks good English and is extremely kind and helpful. after 9pm the place fills with locals. on our final night the place was full, spilling out into the square. It was a celebration, but we were made to feel most welcome by the staff. a great place!

If you're staying in the village, you can go down to this restaurant and order food with a few hours notice. The chef will cook up the food on plates, wrap it up for transport and trust you to bring cutlery back the next day. We we're so impressed with the takeaway food, we spent a night there that was awesome! I suggest a visit to this restaurant when you're in the area, the atmosphere is amazing, food is delish, service is fast and friendly and portion sizes are huge!

This place was a real treat as I was running errands and realized time was about to run out on lunch. Lunch in the Emporda is from 1:00-3:00 usually. If you miss this window you could be out of luck! So I quickly headed into the historic walled city in the valley for a quick bite. There were a couple other spots filled with tourists but at Can Quel you heard the clatter of old school Catalan being spoken - all inside because the heat was too much to be any other place. While anything other then Castellano (Spanish) and Catalan was hard to come by, there is little that a good wi-fi, google translate, and a kind smile can't you through. This place cooked like my grandmother! The menu was 15€ and I had to roll out of there fully stuffed with a belly as happy as can be. This is a local pub, so not a fancy place, but instead a good old fashioned pub with home made deliciousness! Looking forward to stumbling in here again soon.

This is where the locals eat in this beautiful old village. The ladies just wanted salad but as the waiter said that they had snails I persuaded them to share a bowl whilst I had one for myself and how we enjoyed them. They came in great bowls, not your French six or twelve. Stewed with bits of pork, red pepper, onion and tomatoes, they were a real taste of Catalan food. Delicious. Whilst the girls enjoyed their different salads I had a very good roasted duck's leg. And all for less than your average uk pub prices.Very good value for money indeed.

10/10 best food we've had in three years of eating in the Costa Brava what can I say always pays to follow white van man lunchtime menu to die for. Catalan bean & fish starter / aubergine with mozzarella, duck or rabbit to follow.

We stayed in Ullastret for a few days last September and this was our regular spot for breakfast, lunch or diner. The staff are so friendly and patient with us as we try to learn a little bit more of the language every visit! The food options were great and they served lovely desserts. We will definitely be back for a visit.

Found this restaurant by chance, and have visited many times since, typically Catalan cuisine, nothing too much trouble, the food was and is excellent and Jordi, the camarero, was a pleasure to meet. Lunchtime specials menu really must be explored!
