Is this the same restaurant that I ate at on 1/17/2005, and then subsequently many, many times over the years? I lived in the Fan for many of those years. My friend and I tried to eat here on Saturday, 8/19/2023 and it was a...nightmare that started with the hostess! We wanted to sit at a table by the windows in the front of the restaurant and asked if she could put our name on the list for a table in the front. She told my friend it would be 30-35 minutes. I asked the young hostess how much longer it would be and she snapped that she had told my friend 45 minutes and there where 3 in front of us. It was way past 35 minutes and tables sat empty and I could understand if she was really busy but the crowd had thinned out by then. Table after table turned over and then finally she was ready to seat us and was taking us to a table in the back and I said that we had been waiting for the table in the front “well that’s reserved”!! What the Heck after 50 minutes of this nonsense I called her a B at which time she said we had to leave! Best decision all day, so we went across the street to Greek on Cary and had the most delicious meal that only cost $15 for a platter of shrimp and veggies. Can Can’s food is mediocre at best and the prices are outrageous. Since the Kincaid’s bought the restaurant it has gone down hill. To quote Paul Kincaid from an article in Richmond Magazine “The goal is to satisfy the customer”. Paul, you need to work on the front of the house and start with the tattooed arrogant hostess.
Yes, there are plenty of good restaurants in Richmond and my personal favorite is Stella’s, which sadly isn’t open on Saturday. It has a great vibe and all of the servers, bartenders and the hostess are a delight. I have never had a bad experience there. I remember eating at Can Can shortly after it changed hands from Ripp to Kincaid and the food was awful. They had cut the large beet salad in half!! After that experience, I have not been eager to go back but my friend really likes it so I said let’s go there Saturday. Big mistake!
I came home and told my husband about the ordeal and he said “ I don’t know why you would go there anyway”? I live in the City in a close knit neighborhood with about 100 homes…it’s a great walkable neighborhood and about 10 neighbors walked past my house on Saturday…I told them all about my unfortunate experience just trying to eat lunch at Can Can!!
I’ve lived in Downtown Boston, Downtown Baltimore, born in LA and have traveled to Paris. My husband is 100% French and speaks French. We have traveled to Quebec City and Montreal many times. I’ve eaten at dozens of DC restaurants since I had an office in Alexandria. One of the things my husband and I love to do when we travel is to dine out and we have travelled all over the states and Islands. We usually rent a house in Portland ME for the month of August and that is the real foodie town!! I have never been treated like I was on Saturday. Where has the civility gone to in the service industry? I ask the hostess who controls the tables and thinks she is putting me in my place. The Kincaid’s don’t respond to negative remarks because Can Can is so popular! Why should we worry there are always great crowds. A piece of advice for you Mr. Kincaid…stop taking reservations for the tables in the front..it’s completely unfair to customers who walk in and wait 50 minutes for a table that never comes!! Oh no that table is reserved…when was that made…as they were driving down to the restaurant and you already had people waiting???
Lastly, when I was in my early 20’s I worked as a hostessl at Dick Ripp’s very popular restaurant “The Abbey”. I had the good fortune to see Mr. Ripp years ago on one of my many visits to Can Can. It was so good to see him.More
