First the only negative; the wait for a table.. Think Yogi Berra; "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." Once you are seated you will experience some of the best food in Richmod. Creative and well prepared recipes. inventive combinartions of meats, seafood veggies and...salads. Classic Italian dishes are a specialty. Desserts to share a must do to end a delicious dinner. Amazing what they do with pastas. You will return and stand in line again.More

If you want genuine Italian food , try Mamma Zu’s. There is plenty of garlic , so make sure you like garlic. Best eggplant Parmesan ever. Pastas are amazing.

We had a group of eight here in early December. We had called ahead with the reservation, but it still took us a while to get a table. During the waiting period, the staff was friendly, cheerful, and made sure we had whatever we needed...to drink. If you anticipate a wait, it is not a problem. Thereafter, when we sat and had dinner, the service was impeccable. The food was quite good, ranging to superb. I do not care for fish, but the rockfish and halibut were so good that we ordered an additional portion to share. The orrechetti with spicy sausage was simply magnificent. Individual experiences vary, of course. But as far as I can tell, everyone who was there on this week night – – and the place was full – – was having a wonderful time. All of the staff were pleasant, efficient, and accommodating. I do not have a single bad word to say about this place. And, for me, that is quite something to say about an Italian restaurant, since I was raised in the Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s.More

Love the food here, you must love garlic though, and the setting isn't fancy, but the food is delicious. We go at lunch to avoid the crowds, as it is a small restaurant.

After a recommendation from a local bartender, we tried Mamma Zu's for a dinner. I've never received such rude service in over 30 years after traveling the whole country. They out their menu on a chalkboard, multiple items our group had never heard of. Our...Server, named Virginia was clearly irritated with our questions about the menu items we didnt recognize. After her disrespect to our table, I mentioned that we had never been to their restaurant.....her rude response was "yeah, I can tell". I've never been so insulted by a restaurant waitress in my life. So many other places to eat don't waste your time here. Terribly dirty, urine on bathroom floor and ceiling tiles falling from ceiling. Not sure how this place stays in business with rude servers and condition of their restaurant. I left after our group ordered food, didnt trust anything that came from this kitchen. Thank you Virginia, our server, for the worst restaurant experience I've had in 30 years. I know I'm not the only one that has experienced this poor service here. Not worth even trying the food.More

There are rare dining gems hidden in away that just defy explanation. You either get it or you don't. This is one such place. I get it. But then I'm a long time Richmonder. We have things no one else gets. I have meant to...try Mamma Zu's for years. Finally did. The food is quite good and the portions generous. And obviously the proprietors are worried about only that - the food. While my grandmother was not Italian, I can clearly picture her running this place: "You don't like the food? Don't eat." I had the crab meat spaghetti. I was impressed, never would imagine those two together. My wife's spaghetti and meat sauce was heavy on the garlic but very good. The tiramisu might be the best I have ever had. They don't bother printing menus. Everything is on the big chalkboard. The waitress helpfully offered "you can take a picture." It was classic! I took it all in good fun as opposed to being insulted. Social media is also not a concern, nor maintaining a fancy website. They are not worried about updating the decor either. The service was fine. This is a tiny place in a transitional neighborhood that I will certainly return to.More

Kind of a hole in the wall spot but it was amazing when we went in, felt very much in the neighborhood! Ordered calamari salad and buratta they were perfectly seasoned and tasty. I had the linguine and clams which were fresh Manila clams And...perfect pasta. The tiramisu was one of the best I have had, amazing find!More

Went to Mamms Zu's with my husband and another couple for a small birthday celebration. The lone menu on a chalkboard on the wall was a pain to read and gave no descriptions. Food was average at best, with the tuna steak being awful -...extremely over-seasoned. Our waiter was disinterested, grumpy, devoid of any personality and was obviously trying to get us in and out so they could flip the table - to the point where he snatched a bottle of wine off the table that still had about a glass in it. I have lived in Richmond for 14 years and had been here once before, many years ago. I was excited to go back - however, I will never go again and will not recommend it to the many out of town visitors we have who ask for restaurant recommendations. All in all just "eh" food and very unwelcoming atmosphere.More

The reputation for rudeness is well earned as is the reputation for excellent Italian food. Go early or go late unless you like to wait and hour and 15 minutes in a very cramped space. But go, because the food is worth the wait.

Unexpected surprise. Doesn’t look like much, and the place is old, but the food is really good. Been on business 25 years. Started with Caprese Salad which had very tasty tomatoes. Everything available is on the chalk board. My meatballs and spaghetti was wonderfully prepared...with very tasty sauce. The Tuna and Osso Buck was also very good. Clams, mussels, and scrimp were also on the menu. Lamb was available along with salads galore. Clams and Calamari were on the menu. You will not go away hungry. Service is a bit slow so if you want a table it’s best to be at the front door at 5:30pm when they open. A favorite local place with nice wine selection. We all took away doggie bags for additional meals.More
