I have been trying to like this place for years, but the food consistently disappoints. The concept of training people with disabilities for restaurant jobs is great, but the food is consistently mediocre. We go for the music and order food so that our stay...is worth it for the staff, but I just can't do that anymore. The shrimp and grits were bland and lacking salt; at other times food has been over salted. I've had bland over-cooked fish, under cooked sauces. I recently tried the gluten free cauliflower wings appetizer and it was surprisingly good, but tried it again and it was so awful I had to send it back (which I never do). Everyone seems pleased with the drinks, though. I will eat first, then go for the music and the drinks from now on. The staff is great.More

Disorganized from get go- waitresses are volunteers but should have some semblance of what to do - she or they were in a daze, she didn’t know about menu, never took our order, appetizer cold poorly prepared - this was second time here and first...time was just as negative, gave up trying to order dinner and left - I had a reservation which was never recorded / just lots of misstepsMore

I visited Max's Positive Vibe Cafe last night with a friend and had a wonderful dinner. We ordered a glass of wine to start off and were told it was half price because it was "Happy Hour." So, we were off to a good start....We shared an appetizer of cauliflower wings which was tangy and very tasty. I ordered the Louisiana Shrimp and Grits and it was absolutely delicious! Just the right amount of spice and the grits were amazing. The combination of shrimp and sausage in the dish really hit the spot. Our waitress came to the table to ask us if we wanted another glass of wine before Happy Hour ended, which I thought was very thoughtful. The service was great and the food was delicious. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening!More

Went to Richmond to see our new (less than a day old) great grand daughter. After a visit at hospital, occurred to us that breakfast was hours ago and something to eat was in order! Stopped in small strip mall near another child and spied...the Positive Vibe Cafe. Started really well when I saw Legend Brown Ale on draft. Doesn’t get much better in my book. Oyster appetizer was delicious. Waitress, Jessica, assured me that their grits would live up to my New Orleans standards so tried the Shrimp and Grits Dinner. She was right! Jeanne ordered an Oyster Po Boy. The bread was near New Orleans quality. Often that is the downfall of Po Boys in our area. The young woman who brought our food and tended to our table had Down’s Syndrome. Which brings me to the rest of this story. The Positive Vibe Cafe employees are physically challenged adults who are being trained for jobs in food services. They have a foundation and have been doing this for some 15 years. Came away with a fine meal and more than a few Positive Vibes Jeanne & Gil FreyMore

Wow! I stopped in with my girlfriend for a quick bite. I had the Southern Gentleman Hamburger. It had Pimento Cheese and a Fried Green Tomato on it. This may have been one of the best if not the best burger I have ever eaten....My girlfriend had the Watermelon Salad. I tried it, and it was extremely refreshing. The restaurant was created to help those with disabilities, and that makes it more charming. The star here is the food. I wish I could give it more than the highest rating, it was truly amazing.More

Some friends and I are searching for the best burger in Richmond. After four lunches we all agreed that Max's is #2 so far. Burger was cooked perfectly, brioche bun was good, service was good and the seafood chowder was amazing. Have been here before...and will definitely be back again.More

We were thirsty after a walk and thought this establishment would be perfect for a brief stop. We were greeted immediately and served with a smile. The hostess/ waitress was cordial, efficient and shared some of the history of the Vibe Cafe. We really enjoyed...the staff and will be back.More

I worked with general manager, Garth Larcen, to arrange for a group buffet with delicious wraps. There was good parking for the bus, excellent table service, and even gluten free options. This is a training facility well worth a stop.

Enjoyed a nice dinner with family here this past weekend. Diverse menu with lots of options - vegans included - and friendly service. Everyone enjoyed their meals - vegan enchiladas, turkey rueben and fried oyster po boy sandwich. Loved the sweet potato cole slaw!
