Little cozy Japanese restaurant. Food is cheap and good size. Offers a wide variety of items. Their deep fried oysters are crispy and non greasy. Tempura was so so. Staff are friendly. Cash only.

The Porter Square exchange in the Old Sears building has been making some changes. I love the many small restaurant that were there. Tampopo is still there with only 5 tables ( 2 sets of 4 and 2 sets of 2 ). The people are very nice and serve tasty and affordable dishes. I had shrimp tempura ( lightly battered ) with soba/udon noodles and carrots in a fish broth that I would have again. Go and have a dish there and you will see what I mean.

so happy with the taste and price!
had katsu curry and although there's no veggie in the curry, it tastes good.
i really liked the sukiyaki beef on rice also. it tasted like gyudon though.

Stopped by on a quiet Monday afternoon. I was looking for something cheap, filling, and good. Tampopo was exactly the right spot.

This hasn't been reviewed much here but is popular on other forums. On a late Sunday afternoon, the food court area was empty except for the few tables at Tampopo which was encouraging.
We all had tempura and the pieces were fried perfectly. The noodles were fresh and nicely chewy. But the broth was just salty and otherwise unremarkable. Scant scallions were the only sign of a topping. It was solid and a great comfort food. But it wasn't anything that we found exciting or worthy of a quick return. Given that this was relatively highly rated and in the middle of a lot of competition I had expected more.
The chef and the server were very polite and attentive.

I didn't intend to eat here. At all. I really wanted ramen, which is the shop right next door but I wasn't paying attention while on the phone and seated myself at Tampopo. After I realized my mistake, I felt it would have been rude to up and leave. So I stayed and I'm glad I did.
Housed in a Lesley University building, there is a little corner of Asian heaven, where there are several Asian eateries. This place is located in Porter Square. You can park behind the building for 2 bucks an hour and that's worth the hassle of trying to find parking for free. This area is heavily settled. Back to Tampopo. So this place is not ramen. But they had a wide variety of rice bowls. I ordered a fried Chicken thigh bowl. 6.95. How do you go wrong? I received a freshly fried boneless Chicken thigh, flattened and perfectly prepared. It was dressed with a spicy mayo, on top of a mixed green and seaweed salad on top of perfectly cooked rice. I'm a big guy and it filled me up. The server was very nice and welcoming. All in all, I now have the two places to decide to visit

This is a nice place to go for authentic homemade Japanese. It was recommended to me as a Japanese restaurante at Porter Square, but in reality it is inside a small shopping mall. It took me a while to find it, I thought I had missed it. I tried the tempura and it was delicious.

We were looking for takoyaki (Squid Balls) and they had been quite hard to find outside of Boston. Fortunately, they place offers it and the takoyaki was everything we expected them to be. The service was friendly and our orders were quickly cooked.

Delicious food for a reasonable price! I would recommend finding parking through the SPOT app. It saved me the headache of expensive garages and impossible to find meters.

I was expecting something special, since all previous reviews were 5 stars. But, instead, I was disappointed. I ordered the deluxe fried fish plate. Nothing was really tasty—just O.K.

I recommend the healthy nasu bowl, shrimp tempura, steamed dumplings. Suitable for all ages
This place is inside Porter square exchange mall. From the outside of the building all you can see is Citi Bank and City sports and a Coffee shop. There are several other Asian restaurants beside Tampopo that are also good but Tampopo is the best IMHO. A local secret.
The staff are very nice too and will keep refilling your hot tea! If you see a big sumo type guy behind the counter definitely eat there. He is the owner and the best chef.
Its cash only but theres a bank of america ATM in the building.

If your looking for a great little inexpensive restaurant, you came to the right place. The place is small so the waitress will always notice if you need something. Sometimes it might get packed so seating might e a problem since it looks like it can only seat 15 max. Overall the food is great. I love spicy mayo and they had plenty of that. The fried foods are delicious and to crave for. For under ten bucks with tip, I can be full for the rest of the day.

I eat at Tampopo regularly and have travelled all over Japan. The restaurant is small and the furnishings are bit dated but the food is ALWAYS great. Their specialty is agemono which means fried foods. So if you go here for sushi, you are in the wrong place. However, if you want the best freshly prepared tempura, tonkatsu, and croquettes in town, Tampopo is the place. Try the "Matsu bento" with a cream croquette (with tonkatsu bbq sauce on it) or the Nasu Soboro (eggplant and ground pork/chicken). They also serve good Udon noodle dishes.
