Arriving in the area too late to shop, we pulled into the first restaurant nearby, Eldsto Art Cafe, left satisfied. Read on for details.
Located on the highway that passes through Hvolsvollur, next to the Kronus, Eldsto has a nice, friendly feel. The service was, not suprisingly friendly. Then menu is online only, so have your smartphone and connect to their WiFi.
The Country Salad was fresh and small. We selected the two most traditional sounding items on the menu: the lamb soup and fish stew. The lamb soup was savory, not too salty with a modest amount of lamb and was satisfying. The fish stew was also good, a bit too salty and probably more rich than you think.
"Wine by the glass" comes in single-served bottles.
The two salads, two entrees and two glasses of wine totalled $85. The meal was good, but not that good.
We interacted with three members of the staff; all were friendly and personable

Windy day on the road back from Vik, needed soup. Soup is a staple particularly while traveling, but I'd been disappointed in the offerings in Reykjavik - lamb, fish, lobster. All a bit light on the meat and a bit heavy on the broth, with one place only bringing a half bowl for the 2,000kr bill. Not at Eldsto. Stopped on a whim as there was a soup bowl on the signboard outside the door. The lamb stew was freaking magnificent, full to the brim with chunks upon chunks of lamb with root veggies and pumpkin, stewed in broth with fresh rosemary. Two urns of soup of the day (cauliflower and curry my choice) with bread and Icelandic butter were also available, and they came with a free refill - unheard of anywhere else I've seen in Iceland. Fantastic. Recommend. Stop and try it, save the trouble of going to downtown Reykjavik for every meal.

This was a great dinner.
There is plenty of indoor seating but we opted for an outdoor table, which caught the evening sun very well.
There is a very good menu and we ordered vegetable quiche and “Thor burger”, which was served with fries. The food was served very quickly and both dishes were well sized and very tasty.
The bill was very reasonable and the experience an excellent one.

Delicious food served on beautiful hand thrown pottery. We had a late lunch after visiting the Lava Centre nearby. Fish and chips, veggie burger, and soup. There was a choice of two soups, mushroom and potato leek and it’s unlimited refills so I sampled both - both delicious. The food is served in the pottery they display and sell on site and it is beautiful and perfectly suited for this type of home cooking. The cafe is small with a room to the side that was roped off when we were there so it felt cozy with only 4 tables filled at 3 pm. We took two pieces of cake home because they looked so appetizing in the display case.

Hidden gem on the ringroad, a diner restaurant cafe in a perfect combo, plus being an interesting gallery of icelandic pottery at its best. Warm and welcoming to sit in. Excellent food and coffee, the fish of the day fresh and delicately fried and served, very fresh.

After a challenging first Iceland journey day - rental car broke down halfway in a rain soaked Golden Circle drive - we were welcomed at Eldstó Art Café for diner. The super chill crew hooked us up with two delicious soups to ease our brains and soothe our souls. With bellies filled and spirits renewed we found the energy to pay a nightly visit to Seljalandfoss, to close off the day on the up side. Thanks guys!

Best mushrooms soup of my life. The waitress was super friendly and explained vegan options, they had already choices but also could adapt others. Local craft beer too. I ordered the veggie burger with salad and was great but the highlight is in my opinion the soups!

This was our favorite place to eat in Southern Iceland. We ate here 3 times in one week. The staff was very nice and polite. Our meal was served quickly. But the taste was the best! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. Our group enjoyed the daily soup throughout the week (lamb, sweet potato, pumpkin & carrot). Our favorite dishes were the fish stew (fresh cod au gratin) and the fish and chips.

We had the best time in this lovely little restaurant. We stopped on our way from Seljaladsfoss, as it is only 15 minutes drive from there! I have ordered the lamb soup and it was the best soup I had in all Iceland. My girlfriend had a salmon, which was also delicious. I strongly recommend to stop in this place, the owners are very nice people, they even have their own pottery, which you can buy as a souvenir and serve all the dishes on them.

So glad we stopped by here on our way through for lunch. The staff were so friendly and the food was really tasty. They seem very proud of their homemade produce and rightly so. The portions were large but it didn’t mean the quality sufferers

I ordered the vegetarian burger which was delicious! The staff Nico was really friendly and helpful. After telling him about wanting to see the northern light, he went on the extra mile to tell me about difference sources on aurora forecast. When he packed for my takeaway, he was so considerate, making sure I have enough napkins, cutleries etc. He also explained to me the concept of the cafe.
The cafe was also really cool, displaying artwork made by owner with video showing the production process.

If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Iceland, on route 1, driving between Vik and Reykjavik, and you’re looking for a great place to eat, you can do no better than to stop in at the ‘Eldsto art cafe’ in Hvolsevelli.
This place doesn’t look much from the outside but inside you’ll find a charming cafe, friendly, welcoming staff and really excellent food. The lamb and vegetable soup ( main course!) was superb. The best I’ve had, and my husbands fish and chips were simply delicious. For dessert I couldn’t resist one of their home-made cakes. I had the French chocolate cake. It was warm and gooey and divine.
All the food is genuinely home-made and even if you just call in for coffee and cake, you won’t be disappointed. They also sell locally made pottery which is very pretty and very professional.

Our family of 8 spent 8 days in Iceland travelling all around the country. You can imagine we got really hungry when we found this great place. The lamb soup was tasty, excellent and the salmon steak, the fish and chips and all other fish dishes were great. The personnel was very friendly, many thanks to all of them for the great hospitality.

We were recommended this place after visiting LAVA and we were delighted. Lovely friendly staff. Pottery that was just amazing wished I’d got a couple of bowls now. The Lamb stew for lunch was delicious herby and full of meat we Eloise have gone everyday if it wasn’t for the fact we dropped on the Lava place and they suggested

Delicious fish stew and lamb soup. Good service and good food. The ceramic art theme is interesting. Both food and art are relatively expensive but this is still a good food choice in a rather rural area.
