Disappointed. Home ill and working from home. Ordered take out for 2. Feel I got ripped and didn't receive what I paid for. Won't be ordering out for a while. With the cost, quality, flavor of chicken fried chicken + pasta, primarily, doesn't justify or...even measure up to me ordering there again--rubbery chicken. Turkey reuben was ok. It just wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be and anticipated more, like I've had there before. Strawberry breeze smoothie with protein powder and yogurt was delish though!More

We had the pleasure of twins working at the restaurant and they were both as professional and helpful as anyone we have seen in the business. It is weird we do not recall their names but they did an amazing job. As owner’s of businesses,...I made the comment that whoever owns this place thanks God everyday for those two; especially in an age where showing up is considered a cause for promotion. The food was also outstanding. I had the Winter Salad and it had to bring joy to Alaskans during this cold, dark winter. My wife was not that hungry and had the avocado toast with an egg over medium and she loved it. Our daughter got the halibut tacos (for the 3rd time since we got here) and said they compared to the best one’s she had. My daughter and wife went to the bakery side and came back with their choice: chocolate chip cookie and a “Scotchie”: an oatmeal cookie laden with butterscotch chips. Wow! I had the local tea that we later got from The Kobuk - you have to get some of this tea! Cinnamon and many other flavors in a black tea base. Perfection. My wife had a great cup of coffee. We could not have enjoyed the meal more than we did.More

Boy did this place go downhill! Amazing how a place can descend so quickly and so far. Food was horrible, service smug, prices very high. I mean $9.00 for 4 little shrimp to add onto my pasta?? Come on, you just gotta be kidding! As...an extra bonus, was with a party of four and all water glasses had lip marks on them. Yuck! Your time has come and gone. Anyone that goes here twice is a sucker!More

I was really looking forward to our first visit back to South since COVID hit. We were seated promptly. The restaurant is light and airy, and very clean. There was not enough water in the carafe on the table to fill our four glasses, so...we requested more when our drink orders were taken. We placed our food order when the drinks arrived: one soup, one appetizer to share, one dinner entree, two sandwich entrees, and one dinner salad. The wait seemed to be getting pretty long for our hummus platter and soup starters, when the waiter arrived with the soup, and our four entrees. I commented, "I guess you can cancel the appetizer now, since we already have our dinners." The waiter seemed confused, and said, "It will be ready in a few minutes." He seemed annoyed when I said that we no longer wanted the appetizer, now that our entrees were there. There was no mention of the soup being brought with the entree, instead of as a starter. Our drinks were also empty when or meals were brought, but we had to flag the waiter down again to get refills (he apparently didn't notice the empty glasses when he set our plates on the table). No refills of our drinks (one beer, three iced teas) were ever offered during our meal. The Salmon Simply entree and Butter Burger plate were satisfactory. The South Chop salad was missing both the avocado and the cherry tomatoes listed on the menu. The Turkey Reuben was tasty, but the bread pieces were so small compared to the filling that it was impossible to pick up and eat. (It was eaten with a knife and fork). It was also very odd to find a whole sugar snap pea in a Reuben sandwich. All in all, the food was tasty, although it had some issues. The service was not at all the level that I expect from South. Normally, I would reflect this in the tip, but this is a bit uncomfortable to do, when the server is standing next to you, holding the electronic tablet, and watching, while you enter the tip amount.More

Great food and service. The wait was even worth the food. The restaurant was clean and staff were courteous. The prices were on the spendy side. Loved the giant (real) sour dough pancake!

I hope that mine was an unusual experience and with all the stress of COVID on this industry, I am not dropping the stars as much as I usually would. I was surprised to see charred toast actually served to a customer and the shock...of crunching on eggshell is never a good dining experience, so the food disappointed. We did not see our waiter after we gave our order, someone else brought the food, no one checked on us ever, but fortunately I was able eventually to flag some random employee to beg for a coffee refill. What stood out the most however was after we had pushed our plates away and were sitting wondering how to get our check, we saw our waiter reappear, pick up the plates and tableware from person at another table who had been coughing and rubbing his nose, set them down, and then he whipped out a payment device with the same hands and thrust it at me. It is unacceptably unsanitary to force customers to handle this device. In addition, the device demands you make a decision on how high you want your tip to be (no options under 18%) while the waiter who has been MIA the entire meal stands there shifting from foot to foot. Good reviews here suggest the food and service can be much better. But as long as the filthy greasy tip-extortion machine system will still be required if a credit card is used, we will not be back to give them a second chance.More

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, indoor dining is not currently allowed however they do have limited outside seating and they offer takeout. They offer the typical “trendy” menu entrees, as well as a decent kid’s menu. There are two sides to the house, the restaurant...and a coffee shop.More

I don't write restaurant reviews that often. Visited South Restaurant on 6/16 at 7:00 PM. We sat at a corner table in the bar. Bartenders provide service to the bar tables. A female server brought a water pitcher and two glasses. We noticed food debris...inside the water pitcher. We waited for sometime for a server to return to point out that the water pitcher had food debris inside. The server apologized and brought clean water. We ordered beer from the female bartender. It was served cold, fresh, and with the proper head and CO2. We ordered two entrees. We were satisfied with the entrees. Good flavor, good portion, presentation. When our entrees arrived we order two more beers, different beers from our first round. We ordered beers from the female server. Within 2 minutes the male server (short hair, 20s, suspenders) came to the table and asked if we needed anything else. We said we had already ordered beers from the other server, we stated our beer order again. Five minutes later, the male server returned with the wrong beers. After a short exchange, the server acknowledged this, apologized and left with the beers. Another 5 minutes passed before the male server returned with the correct beers. After finishing our entrees we order two desserts. One for eating in (chocolate mouse) and one to-go (carrot cake) to bring to a friend. After a few minutes the male server returned with the desserts, but he had mixed up which was supposed to be to-go and which was for eating in. We did not complain. We requested silverware as it had been cleared with our entrees. The male server acknowledged this. After 5 minutes we still did not have silverware, I stood up and got the attention of the female bartender who came over and she did promptly bring silverware. The carrot cake was disappointing. The cake was dry and tasted bland with a hint of refrigerator. Honestly, it was on of the poorest tasting carrot cakes I have ever had at a restaurant. The presentation was pleasing, but flavor and texture was subpar. The male server checked with us shortly after we we finally got silverware. At that time, we needed to get going so we provided our credit card as well as a popular $10 off coupon. The server acknowledged he was unfamiliar with the coupon, but would get his manager. Soon after the male server return with the two credit card receipts stating that the manager had applied the coupon. The total was $85. The server did not bring an itemized receipt. At first I signed the merchant copy with a 20+ % gratuity, but then realized that the total seemed higher than it should be. No server checked back in with us. I considered walking to the bar to request an itemized receipt, but didnt feel like being confrontational. Also COVID 19 stuff has the restaurant requesting social distancing and masks when moving around the restaurant ( no problem with this. It just made it harder to walk up to the bar). We looked up the menu online and calculated our total bill, but couldn't justify to the total we were charged. It appeared that maybe coupon wasnt applied or that the two incorrect beers were not removed from the bill (I dont know). At the end after no server checked in on us, I filled out the cutomer copy for a $0 gratuity. I filled out a comment card briefly stating what I have said here. I left, my partner went to the restroom. When my partner came out she overheard the male server mocking the comment card and possibly noting that I had forgotten to sign the receipt (which may have been the case in my frustration). Also, I wonder if the comment card was given to the manger? I have eaten at South several times. I am generally happy with the service and the food. This time the service was friendly but lacked in keeping our order straight and prompt service topped off by an incorrect charge and no itemized receipt. Will I go back again? yes. I will avoid the carrot cake though.More

The world is a crazy place right now and before all restaurants in Anchorage had dine in options closed, we wanted a nice meal out. South was the perfect pick! As always, great meal and fantastic service!

A friend of mine treated me to a birthday breakfast at South restaurant, my very first time to visit. I tried the quiche and found it a generous slice and absolutely delicious. Our server was friendly, helpful in answering our questions and the service was...timely. I was also delighted by the fresh, ripe fruit that came with my quiche. The restaurant has a modern decor and the thing that was particularly enjoyable was the beautiful artwork on the walls. And it is for sale if you have some money you would like to invest in art. I will definitely go back to South again. The breakfast prices were mid-range and it seems to be a popular place as there were several people waiting for the doors to open at 9 a.m. midweek.More

** The worst thing about this restaurant is the parking. There is absolutely none to be had. One has to park over at the box store – the giant home improvement box store and walk back over. Not the end of the world but a...very definite inconvenience. So be prepared. After the parking debacle......it to stop in here for a quick bite and a refreshing libation. There are many trendy drinks to choose from especially if you fancy a gin and tonic or other unique presentations. Beware - their Bloody Mary is exceptionally spicy. 🌶 🥵 Enough so that while none of us had one, we have had it in the past and all agreed that their base mix was just too much horseradish. Otherwise, lunch was lovely and tasty. Portion sizes are not huge so if your hungry better snag an app or a salad etc. Pricing is on the higher side for brig drinks and menu items. This is a popular spot so you need to get there early if you plan to eat in the restaurant. We would’ve had a 45 minute wait at 1.30p on a Saturday afternoon so we opted to eat in the pub area. Entertaining bartenders though and the seating was comfortable enough.More

We’ve only been here once, but it was by far the best sit-down breakfast we’ve experienced in Alaska! (Even better then they other store- Snow City!) we made a reservation via phone the night before and were instantly seated upon our arrival. I ordered the...eggs benedict and it was the perfect balance of hearty breakfast and flavor experience. Service was speedy and kind. We got through breakfast so quick we made it out to Portage in no time. Glad it’s so far south as we’d be there all the time if it was in midtown.More
