Travelers' Choice
2024
We specialize in fresh, seasonal cuisine with ingredients purchased directly from local markets and fisherman. The red fish is a house specialty by itself, in the jambalaya, pasta, or on a poor boy. The same care goes into the procurement of local Gulf shrimp, Louisiana blue crab. Lucky travelers and locals alike can feast on shrimp and grits to sautéed crab cakes. Enjoy our large and beautiful French Quarter courtyard – relax with friends and family over hand-crafted libations and savor some of our Cajun favorites.

This restaurant is under-rated for the food and ambiance. Our first night in New Orleans we ate at a similar priced restaurant and the food and ambiance did not compare. There is limited inside seating (I did not see the patio) but it was surprisingly not crowded for a Friday night. We had the crawfish etouffee, shrimp creole, and jambalaya, and I could not stop digging into my husband's shrimp creole, the shrimp were large, fresh tasting, and in a tasty fresh tomato sauce. My daughter's etouffee was quite good also. I had the jambalaya but although good, was on the spicy side for my tastes. We also tried the praline cheesecake and crabcakes, which were both good also. I also thought the prices were reasonable, about medium range for a good meal in New Orleans. I've eaten at many of the "high-end" restaurants but wanted to seek out a good meal that was not as expensive since there were three of us. Evangeline hit the mark.

My family and I made a reservation for 11 am on a Saturday morning. We arrived just as the restaurant opened. We were greeted by 3 friendly gentlemen working in the restaurant, and seated at a table in the middle, near the bar. Our server, Jonathan, took our drink orders quickly and gave us plenty of time to look at the small brunch menu. We ordered coffee and iced tea, the Evangeline Breakfast Bowl, the Gabriel Breakfast Bowl, and the Catfish Benedict. The coffee and ice tea were freshly brewed, and just strong enough. Our food came out looking delicious! All 3 came with breakfast potatoes that were perfectly seasoned and lightly crispy. The Evangeline bowl had eggs, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, green onions, and cheddar cheese on top of potatoes. The Gabriel bowl had the same ingredients as the Evangeline bowl with Andouille sausage, alligator sausage. The Catfish Benedict had two large catfish filets on sliced French bread, topped with two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, with potatoes on the side. Everything was well seasoned and flavorful. Jonathan checked on us periodically and made sure our drinks were filled and that we were enjoying the food. The portions were very generous and we left full and ready for the rest of our day in the French Quarter. We would definitely return to try some of their other brunch entrees and dinner.

This spot has a great vibe and is a small but busy restaurant. The service was great - really friendly. We were sat at a table and then the server came to say he felt we would enjoy sitting at a different table which we appreciated as we got a better view of the restaurant. We ordered things we had never tried before: Fried Alligator: Tasty and well seasoned. Crawfish and Grits: Tasty - tender crawfish and plenty of grits. Crawfish Etoufee - this was my favourite dish - kick of spice that keeps you going back for more. Grilled redfish with pesto pasta - both our kids ordered this dish and I am assuming from the fact they ate the whole lot and I didn't get a look in that it was as delicious as it looks. Unfortunately they didn't have the pecan pie that I was really looking forward to tasting so we didn't get a desert but otherwise a fab meal.

Aside from almost falling down the two steps to the hidden men's restroom, it was great. We had a change in our group size from four to seven and they were accommodating and allowed us to make the change. I got the gumbo which was what I expected from NoLa cuisine, it had vast flavors, was spicy enough to enjoy and it came with a very fair service size. I recommend it. I got the Alligator to try and then the Jambalaya. The server warned that the alligator can be overwhelming in terms of spicy for some but enjoyable. She was right about it being enjoyable and, fortunately, I did not find it to be too spicy at all and it was delicious. I am not a huge fish person and I enjoyed this. Alligator does not seem to have an overwhelming strong taste. The jambalaya was quite spicy but wonderful. This had the flavor expanded by the spice and I would gladly order it again. The dish itself was also very physically hot so that may have also changed the flavor to be more spicy than the alligator which had cooled off before I ate because I was talking so much to the table and the jambalaya came second. We ordered a lot of drinks and different dishes and there was approval all around. This was great people we did not enjoy Meril as much so a better option than Meril for sure. The prices were also very fair for the area and you can get a lot of food and drinks without having a scary expense report. It is worth a trip

We arrived early for our 7:00 reservation and the restaurant was closed until 7:00 for a private function but the hostess very nicely sat us immediately on the patio. Nick was our waiter and was exceptional! We ordered cocktails and sat back to relax and enjoy before ordering. Unfortunately, we had to move inside due to an incoming rain storm but the hostess had already set a table aside for us so it was an easy transition. My sister ordered 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell for an appetizer which she thoroughly enjoyed. For dinner I had the seafood platter which consisted of fried oysters, shrimp and catfish served with sauces and steak fries. She had the fried catfish Po'boy with steak fries. Both were very good and plentiful. A delightful meal, great, attentive, staff and a really nice restaurant; what more can one ask for?

Went on my kid's 21st birthday. All employees acknowledged the kid. The waiter brought them beads and paid for their meal, the restaurant gave them a free dessert and sang Happy Birthday. The food was amazing! 10 out of 10 would go again!!!!-

Visited on the recommendation of our hotel which was across the street. Made a booking for 730 not leasing they closed at 830 on a Sunday so that explained why I felt abit rushed, though I don't think folks dawdle eating there food in the US? Anyway nice greeting, table in the bar - thankfully as it was v hot! and our order taken quickly. Jambalaya and the special redfish, dirty rice and 2 wines. Jambalaya, which I'd never had before, was too spicy for me and rather disappointing - I couldn't find any chicken in it and the amount of sausage was miniscule as was the amount of it; I couldn't eat it as it was too spicy but maybe that's how it's supposed to be? I did say this to our server who seemed surprised anyone would say anything then did nothing about it. Husband's fish was lovely though it was also picy. No desert wanted. The bill inc a 18% time was $99 which I thought astounding but seems par for the course in NO food price wise.

Thank you so much for your review. We are disappointed to read your review and is not the normal review we are accustomed to. We are a Cajun restaurant which means the spice level will be higher than normal. We are a small family-owned restaurant and rely on reviews so we may suggest not dining at a Cajun or Creole restaurant in the future if you are sensitive to spice. We appreciate you giving us a try though, Thank you.

Very friendly and welcoming service. Made reservations for Thursday night at 6 and by time we left it was filling up. We sat indoors and were comfortable. The crawfish and grits were delicious. Yummy Pimm's cup and strawberry lemonade as well.

Greeted very warmly on arrival. Unfortunately that was the best part of the evening. Drinks arrived after several beers being advised they were not available. Cocktails tasted very watered down. Placed our order to be notified again several items were not available. By the time our food arrived we were the only people left outside in the courtyard and the staff were cleaning up. My husband ordered the jambalaya which consisted of rice rice & more rice. Only 2 pieces of chicken & sausage in the whole dish. After my 1st & 2nd choices not being available I settled for the grilled redfish & pesto pasta. Although very tasty the amount of oil totally overwhelmed the dish. Very disappointing evening.

We went for Sunday brunch. Had read about and saw pictures of their outdoor seating area and although the weather was perfect it was closed when we visited, the only option was indoors near the bar. The other strange / disappointing thing was that although the menu was already very limited the server came back (1/2 hour after we ordered) to say that the kitchen was short staffed and four of the entrees were now not an option and I had to pick something else. I will say the food we did get was very good and our server was nice and apologetic. She was good at keeping drinks refilled, appreciated the carafe of water for the table.

Ugg. I'm so disappointed. This meal could be the very worst we have ever experienced. Not many places you get both horrible food AND horrible customer service. The man that seated us was so rude& and the girl sever was clueless. My husband said his fried shrimp tasted freezer burnt and the fried catfish was slimy. My redfish was undercooked and soaked in the pasta sauce it sat on. When my husband got up to use the restroom, the man that sat us followed him to the door. Um, weird. I got sick on the way back to the hotel. Forgive me for puking in your street, but what a relief. Damn, I had a lot of choices for dining on this holiday and I did good until tonight.

Great spot with some tasty cajun dishes! I had the chicken and sausage jambalaya, which was thick, filling, and well seasoned. The fried green tomatoes were cooked and breaded perfectly, as was the fried alligator. They do alligator so well here! My husband loved the smoky red beans and rice. My friend had the creamy etoufee, and really enjoyed it. A great pimm’s cup. Nice cocktail list and great service. Have eaten her a few times and would return.

Amazing staff! Incredible smiles! Great gator--both fried and as sausage. This place had everything we were looking for in a post-late night French Quarter meal! We were a big party and were also late and they were SO accommodating on a Saturday morning, plus: the Southern Candymakers are right across the street with the BEST pralines in the city! Vives le bon tempes at Evangeline!

I ordered the chicken and biscuits, I literally took two bites and I could not sit there and pretend to enjoy this food even a little bit. The potatoes we're literally PLAIN, no seasoning at all. Like they chopped up a potato, fried it, and that's it. The "Alligator Gravy" tasted like flour and water. I tried the place because of the good reviews but they are literally over rated for nothing. The managers were so uptight with our waiter we didn't even complain about my friends "Crawfish and Grits"(which were in a soupy sauce with barely any crawfish and an ice cream scoop of grits). Our waiter was kind, he obviously doesn't run the kitchen so he's not to blame.

The website advertises Evangeline as the best Cajun food in the French Quarter. I hope that is not true, or the quality of Cajun food in New Orleans has declined. My wife's po-boy was small, and the shrimp were small and tasteless. Do they use frozen shrimp?? The fries were oversalted. I had to ask our waitress to reheat the crawfish etoufee because it was cold. She seemed puzzled by my request. After being reheated, it was lukewarm. I have had better etoufee in Oklahoma and expected better in New Orleans. The service was poor and we do not recommend it. It is NOT a top 100 New Orleans restaurant!

French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.
