My husband and I enjoy German food and finally got a chance to visit Essen Haus since recently moving to Madison. We visited the restaurant on a Friday night which was nice as the weather was perfect to sit outside. I ordered Sauerbraten and my...More

Great beer and service, but food was a real let down. Wiener schnitzel was pretty disappointing--lacked seasoning and flavor plus it was expensive. Would not return.

They have German beer. But, the beer isn't cold. They have German food but, it's nothing to write home about. Their staff for the most part is made up of College kids. Their staff wears authentic German clothes. They also wear tennis shoes and have...More

I love this restaurant! The German fare is outstanding and they have the best beer in the area! They have music-a concertina player in the middle of the week and loved it! Great service too and the soft pretzels and horseradish sauce was delicious.

The bad is that the food is subpar at best, so I do not recommend people going here just to eat. The service is always good and fast though and all the service staff wear dirndls and lederhosen, so I can't complain about them at...More

This is great for a one time experience with beer and if you like to see older people dance polka (best attraction there). The staff is immature and forced to wear traditional german outfits, and looks like they hate it. Food is not great but...More

Selection of beer, atmosphere with the band going, all seemed fun and akin to the spirit in a rathskeller. Unfortunately I came to eat. Menu was disappointingly limited, and in doing so, had many small variations on the same theme. Preparation was crude, entrees were...More

The food has the taste and texture of German food. The pickled salad plate is delicious (surprisingly!). The spatzele are good. The menu choices are a little constrained now for the winter, and you must eat kraut with potatoes or rotkraut with spatzele--no substitutions allowed--which...More

We arrived on a Sunday evening anticipating a great experience as we had once before. Only the beer was tasty and it was warm! The pork shank had a burnt skin covering the dry tastless meat. The red cabbage, sauerkraut and german potatoe salad were...More

This past weekend there was no confusing the Essen Hous Oktoberfest with any other genre of experiences! From the front door to the back bar stool, this is Madison's GERMAN House! The food is dead on, in-house made sausages, chops, schnitzels and sides. The Circuses...More
