Excellent appetizers and a wonderful array of entrees. Our favorite Chinese restaurant in Madison! This wonderful family makes you feel like you’re dining in their home.

This little cafe has been serving up great food since I can remember..........at least back to the 1970's. Dependable Chinese fare, eat in or take out. I've had 100's of good lunches here! Don't even think about parking closeby - try the back streets and...walk to lunch..............More

We'd eaten here decades ago when we lived in Madison and now that we are back in that city to live once again, we asked where to get good Chinese food in town. We were told that the Hong Kong Cafe was good. We went...and found it little changed from 30+ years ago. My wife and I both ordered egg drop soup, which was flavorful and satisfying on a cold evening. I stuck with a basic plate--sweet and sour pork--which was ok, average. My wife got a seafood combo. The sauce was not exactly to her liking though that was maybe a matter of preference and should not reflect on the quality. I tasted it and found the shrimp, calamari and scallops prepared well but also was not really fond of the sauce. I noticed several "Best of Madison" awards in frames in the cafe, but it was less than half full at peak dining hour on a Friday evening, which surprised us. We just moved from another city in Wisconsin where we had a favorite Chinese restaurant. We found the Hong Kong a little mediocre compared to what we're used to. Being in Madison, the cafe is also more expensive even though it is a casual diner-type environment. Not sure if we'll go back. We hope to find better Chinese fare in the city.More

I ordered food for delivery and I should have known by the initial contact this was not going to go well. When I placed the call staff were rushed, didn't go through my order with me, asked if I wanted to tip the driver before...I received anything, and hung the phone up before I could even ask how long the delivery would take. I was still hopeful that things would turn out ok at this point, boy was I wrong! I didn't get egg rolls that I ordered for my toddler, the wonton soup was complete mush, the dish I ordered with no pork, tofu instead, had pork strips in it. I did call them and the staff person stated, "I don't care" when I told them what had happened. I will NEVER EVER order from them again!!!! I will use social media to spread the word! The absolute worst consumer service I have ever received!!!More

We had family dinner last Friday. Food was so so but that is not the reason for my review. My review is about the condescending tone of the manager when I asked for clarification on the bill. His handwriting was not clear and I could...not add up the numbers based on what I read. He (an Asian immigrant like me), went onto explain that in United States we charge taxes. Mind you I have been living in Chicago for last 29 years and do know a bit about taxes. I think he was trying to make a point to an "ignorant immigrant" like me who could not read his Chinese English writing. In addition, they added a 20% service charge, something that I was not aware of. I guess my first and last visit explained to me why the restaurant was practically empty on a graduation weekend. Perhaps customers quickly realized that poor attitude on a so so food joint is not worth a second trip?More

Excellent food, incredibly friendly staff. The menu has many options to choose from, and fairly reasonably priced. The dishes with the spicy indicator come medium, unless you specify hot or mild. The medium has a kick, if you are sensitive to spicy food.

The food here was not overpriced, but the serving size did not justify a $10 per dish average. Overpriced average food. The General Tso’ chicken was horrible. I ordered 2 containers. My biggest complaint was I went with my 4 girls for lunch. We ordered...5 dishes and some food to go. To my surprise, I did not look carefully on the menu. 18% gratuity was charged for both my lunch and a few dinners to go. It states in very small writing under the kids menu all parties will be charged. Parties meaning people. I was very dissatisfied. I felt cheated. I paid $213 for Chinese food and only $160 was for the food. The person waiting on us did nothing more than deliver the dishes. I feel like I was taken advantage of. Never going here again. I would suggest you find another restaurant.More

Went tonight, had the pot stickers and kung pao shrimp, hot. Pot stickers come made two different ways, thick or thin skinned, I like the thin but these were made with the thick dough. But they weren't too bad. Kung Pao, could've been hotter but...the thing that I didn't like was that it was too thick and too much vinegar. The vinegar overpowered the flavor and that's not the way it's supposed to be. Way too much corn starch in the sauce, like 3-4 times thicker than molasses, kind of yuck. were it not for that it would've been good, I like all the other ingredients, good batter on the shrimp, chestnuts, peanuts, carrots, but it was all congealed too much. A little disappointingMore
