My fraternity brothers and I had breakfast at Mickies Dairy Bar before the Illinois/Wisconsin football game in Madision in 1959. And my wife and I made a point of having breakfast at Mickies Dairy Bar during our visit to Madison. Founded in 1946, it still...is doing business at the same old stand, at 1511 Monroe Street, across the street from Camp Randall Stadium. Mickey Weidman's restaurant has been a game day tradition for Badger fans for generations. Open from 7 to 2 on Wednesday and Thursday, 6 to 2 on Friday and Saturday and 7 to 2 on Sunday, it specializes in "Yanks" or breakfast potatoes or chopped hash browns -- that's "Yanks" as in "Yankees" or Americans -- topped with scrambled eggs and a choice of omelet ingredients, ham or bacon or sausage or mushrooms or broccoli or spinach and topped with melted shredded cheddar cheese and smothered in poultry gravy. I chose a scrambler with a layer of breakfast potatoes, three scrambled eggs, sausage, cheddar cheese, gravy and toast with a side of home-made corned beef hash. My wife opted for two marinated boneless pork chops, two scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes and toast. On the way out the door, I couldn't resist taking a breakfast sandwich with me, an English muffin with sausage, cheddar cheese and one scrambled egg. Two other specialities on the menu are steak and eggs, featuring a 10-ounce sirloin, and French toast with two cinnamon rolls.More
