I can't believe a place like this still exists

We have lived in Madison for over 35 years and have never visited Mickie's. Lost time. What a great place. We went with another couple. Three of us had never been there and one had not been there for 50 years. I guess we were intimidated by the number of students always standing in line. They reopened this week after being closed for in house dining for a year. What a treasure this is for our city. Original booths, original ceiling. Overlooking historic Camp Randall stadium. We waited in line a short time, but the door keeper brought us steaming mugs of fairly decent coffee while we waited in the beautiful March weather. Folks, the food is nothing fancy. But the prices and quantity make up for it. We had a signature scrambler, a tuna melt , a patty melt and a "red fish" sandwich. We ate until we could no longer fit anything into our bodies and then had malts to top off the meal. What I want to emphasize here though is the staff. Outstanding, bravo and any other accolade you can find. Thank you for making my birthday meal a special event.

You wont leave hungry

Oh my God you guys this is the cutest little diner. What a blast from the past. Everything's original we read reviews before we went so we were not expecting anything fancy. We asked the waiter how long the place had been there he told us 1946 the food was amazing and seriously so cheap. My husband and I split the breakfast scramble and we couldn't even finish it. The size of Pancakes we saw coming out were Gigantic! I'm a bit of a coffee snob and the coffee was great. Get there early, by the time we left there was a line down the block just to get in......What a great find!!!

Popular brunch destination

Now we know why this is such a popular famous University of Wisconsin breakfast place! Get there early to avoid the crowd! When we arrived there was a short line. The host immediately offered coffee with cream or sugar and brought it out while we waited. The service was perfect. We each picked different breakfast entrees. Highly recommend the Griddle Pancakes with oatmeal, apple and cinnamon. Omelette with cheddar and broccoli was delicious as well. Kids had banana pancakes and strawberry pancakes that looked delicious too.

Griddle Cake the size of a magazine.

I found out about Mickies Dairy Bar after asking a local where I could get a good breakfast. I ordered two eggs, homemade hash, bacon, and a single griddle cake. The griddle cake was made with whole grain batter, apples, cinnamon, raisons, and oatmeal. When the meal arrived, I was shocked by the size. It was huge. The single griddle cake was the size of a magazine (the picture proves it.) It was also absolutely delicious. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the bacon was excellent, and the hash was very unusual but I enjoyed it all the same. I am looking forward to coming back here next time I'm in the area.

Old school cool

Why is it that dark "used" places always serve the best food? There is nothing fancy here, feel like the flooring and booths have never changed since it opened and I would guess neither has the food quality. The scrambler (fried potatoes covered in scrambled eggs, meat or veggies and cheese with a side of gravy) is the way to go and the chili and pizza are both excellent. Really appreciated the speed and efficiency of the staff. The wait was worth it. Seek this place out.

Great Breakfast Place

This is a Madison institution and gets very crowded on weekends. Its popularity is well deserved. The waitstaff is friendly and efficient and the service is quick. The prices are most reasonable. Standard egg breakfasts are great with large portions and good potatoes. I recommend this place.

Weekend with friends to see G Love

This place is suited perfectly for this site. We love finding the out of the norm kind of places that have a ton of character and really great food. This place is that to a “T” read the history it’s cool. Super friendly staff, small and quaint. Be prepared to wait as it’s a smaller place but it’s totally worth it. I hope you enjoy as we did.

The Place For Breakfast In Madison

Beautiul 70-year-oldd restaurant and truly great breakfast. The cornmeal pancake (one is plenty) with butter and maple syrup was more delicious than I could have imagined. And it's perhaps the only restaurant where I feel comfortable ordering a strawberry malt as part of my morning meal.

Fantastic breakfast food

My favorite cafe in Madison. I only go to Madison once a year but I always make it a point to stop at Mickies Dairy Bar for breakfast. I always know I'll walk away with awesome leftovers. I loooove it!

Who doesn't like Mickies Dairy Bar?

Came here before a Badgers game, clearly as many have mentioned. Packed as always, but for good reason. This place makes sure you're fed. And who doesn't like a giant pile of Corn Beef and Hash. I couldn't even get close to finishing it. I was stuffed and satisfied.

Fantastic experience! Recommend coming early before it gets packed or visiting on a slightly less busy day. Big portions of food for the lowest prices. Great staff! Always willing to go above and beyond. My fourth visit to this place was today and it was just as great as the others.

I'm 83, at the age of 16. I began my work ay Mickie's as a short-order cook. All orders back then were "short order. One of the owners was a family friend, Norm Bass. The co-owners first name was Vann. Can't remember his last. My grilling mentor was an old guy, Bentley, a very heavy drinker. but a good guy. He taught me the art of grill cooking. I truly enjoyed my time there. So pleased, Mickies was a Madison Institution then. More so, now. Then, It was good food, generous portions, reasonable prices. Reviews suggest it hasn't changed. Wonderful!

A must stop breakfast spot!

We brought two college students here on our visit to see them. What a perfect breakfast joint! Cramped & loud but adorable & perfect for a tasty breakfast! Service was fast once we were seated. Expect to wait outside on the weekends especially. We had about a 30 minute wait. All of our plates were piled high. You wont be hungry when you leave.

Wisconsin Football Breakfast

This place is fantastic. Stopped here before a Wisconsin football game. It is located right by the campus. There was a line out the door, but it moved fairly quickly. This place is like stepping back in time. Food was fantastic, just an amazing breakfast. Get here early on game day. Have a good breakfast and then tailgate or walk around campus before the game. You won’t be disappointed.
