Sign on an a frame outside but near the entrance door says face masks required be nice. All of the staff were wearing face masks and the restaurant had seating arranged for social distancing. This is a Bar BQ restaurant, my wife and I both ordered their combo half baby back ribs and half St Louis style ribs. For sides she had a salad, Marconi and Cheese. For my sides I had their old fashion baked beans and potato salad. Both meals came with corn bread. We were surprised that the size of the meals. We had a whole rack of both style of ribs. All food was very delicious, but more than we could eat so we cut each in half and requested to go boxes. Our server was friendly and provided us with very good service. He kept our beverages refilled and checked on us to see how we were doing. Both restrooms were small one person ones. They appeared to be clean and well maintained. We attended onand a Sunday afternoon and try were very busy. They took our name and cell phone number telling us that we had about a 30-35 minute wait. We figured as much since when we arrived there were many people sitting on the three benches and others waiting in cars and standing outside. We had called ahead when we were about 30 minutes away and asked about how long the wait was. They told us 40-45 minutes and they were not taking phone reservations. The meal was well worth waiting for.

Passing through Chillicothe en route to Virginia we asked hotel for non chain recommendations and they sent us here. An interesting place near downtown Chillicothe. Smoked brisket was excellent and there was plenty of it, but the side of green beans, mushrooms, bacon and carrots was sensational. People were friendly but frankly the food service came way to fast. We had barely received our cocktails and the food came speeding out. Also ask for a table inside the main part of the building as they seated us in the enclosed porch area which was a little too cool in early February.

This little side hop on the way to Columbus was well worth the 1.6 mile trip off the highway. They do a Coconut Onion Ring appetizer that will make you wonder why that’s not the way everyone makes onion rings. The brisket sandwich was good, but my wife got the best pork product we’ve ever eaten in the Maple Bourbon Glazed Pork Rib Eyes. An inch thick each, perfectly cooked and just enough sweet and savory. We had corn casserole, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and sweet potato fries for sides. All were fantastic. (Go ahead and try the marshmallow dip for the sweet potato fries... it turns them into dessert!) we were too stuffed to sample the Grilled Pineapple dessert... Service was awesome from Peyton, but you’ll probably miss her if you don’t hurry. She’s off to nursing school next month!

I dined at this restaurant with a group of 16 people the evening of 04/30/2022. Our reservation was for 6:00 p.m. and we were seated at two tables, for eight. I arrived slightly later than the main group, right at 6:00 p.m. and it took over 15 minutes before seeing a waitress and getting served water and placing a drink order. It took a while to place our food orders and even though it was about 6:20 p.m. on a Saturday evening they were already out of the brisket. amazingly poor planning as this is supposed be a signature dish. I ordered a full rack of St. Louis style ribs expecting them to be flavorful, tender and juicy. They were not; rather they were barely warm and obviously cooked earlier in the week and zapped in a microwave before being served which inevitably toughens cooked meat. They were tough, stringy and extremely disappointing. The sides of potato salad and green beans were OK but nothing special and I had to ask for a side plate for the discarded rib bones. The barbecue sauce was served in pre-portioned containers and only one variety was offered. I suspect it was a commercial brand and had none of the hallmarks of being homemade. I would have thought that several different varieties of homemade barbecue sauce would be available in a restaurant that purports to be "a smokehouse". The service was mediocre at best; perhaps not the fault of the waitress as she was the only server assigned to the group which made ordering and receiving our entrees in a timely manner inevitably unlikely, which it was. The entrees were delivered piecemeal and there was no follow up on satisfaction with the food, except at the end of the meal when the checks were presented and the waitress asked, "what was the best bit?" I replied, "the beer" which was good. They do have a good selection of local craft beers and others. All in all, it was an overpriced and underwhelming experience and I doubt if I'll be back. A restaurant like this should make certain that their key dishes are available and schedule adequate staff to properly serve a large group. I'll definitely be working with our group for an alternative location for get togethers.

To celebrate my hubby’s 72 birthday we wanted to visit Hocking Hills State Park. We live in Indianapolis and we’re concerned about COVID-19. I found a hotel in Chillicothe that had suites with a kitchen. The plan was to fix our meals so we would cut down on exposure to the virus. But hubs really wanted to eat out for his birthday. I texted Old Canal Smokehouse to check on what COVID precautions were in place. After many back and forths I made reservations for his birthday. It was a Friday night and parking was hard to find for these out of Towners. But when we entered Old Canal We were seated immediately. A very sweet young waitress was very attentive to us throughout the meal. My husband got the 1/2 rack ribs, salad and homemade chips. I ordered rib-eye, skillet green beans and creamed corn. Everything was great! The honey mustard dressing is house made, not bottled. The green beans were seasoned with bacon, mushrooms and carrots. Made from scratch creme corn was almost as good as my own. (HeavyCream and cream cheese sauce) I picked this restaurant because it offers so many sides, not just the normal baked potato and garden salad. To me, the sides make the meal, and here, they are the Hallmark of a great restaurant. As my husband said as we left the restaurant, “Totally worth the four hour drive!” We visited 9/25/2020 at 5:30 pm.

We came here tonight for our first time. Easily the best smoke house/BBQ around Ohio. I have been all across the country and it compares to some great Texas spots. I will drive an hour away to eat here again any day. The food quality and presentation showed that the cooks care and take pride in their job. The meat fell off the bone and was very tender. The 4 cheese macaroni and cheese with panko crumbles was delicious. The jalapeno coleslaw was amazing👍👍. The armadillo bites and the mushrooms were very good. The restaurant decor was unexpected and was well done. The wait staff was very polite. I look forward to our next visit.

We had looked at the menu before we left on our adventure so we were intrigued. When we checked into our hotel, we asked the clerk if she had any recommendations for dinner and this was one of the two she shared so we went. We got the "last" table without having to wait for twenty minutes (a good sign) and our server was very friendly and prompt. We had the breaded shrimp and the BBQ meatloaf platter. The portions were huge and the other dishes we saw delivered to other tables matched ours if not surpassed in size. They literally just had a new oven installed the day of our visit, so the mac and cheese side dish was delayed and was not as good as everything else. (I believe as they figure out the new oven's temperature settings it will improve.) It is downtown although parking near could be an issue...we lucked out and had a street spot that opened up right outside the restaurant.

Had high hopes for this place. Hubby had been here before and had a great meal. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich which was a generous portion but the meat was tough and dry. Hubby got ribs that were tough and not great. The service was extremely slow. It wasn’t that busy so I’m not sure why it took so long. I was very disappointed.

There's a reason that Old Canal Smokehouse is the number one restaurant in Chillicothe: the food is fresh, delicious, and served with a smile. Whether you are sat at the bar, at a table, renting out their private part room, or catering; rest assured that this is the most consistent eatery in town. You could wear a blindfold and point to anything on the menu and not be disappointed. I've been going here for years and never once had a bad meal. It is the one place that I am 100% confident in recommending to out-of-towners or anyone looking for a good meal. Always ask for the specials as they rotate seasonally. The mainstays of the menu have to be the Prime Rib when it's available, any of their bbq combo platters, and the smoked wings. The meat on the wings literally falls off the bone and requires nearly no work at all. Get them tossed in the house spicy bbq and you have yourself a perfect appetizer. The staff are great and helpful with menu suggestions. They are willing to go the extra mile without being intrusive and add to your dining experience.

Where to start.... You can’t go wrong with the starters. Nest of eggs or the smoked wings, the wings are HUGE and perfectly fall off the bone. The pulled pork or the brisket sandwich is incredible, add your own sauce to taste. The Prime rib when it’s available is really hard to pass on, the corn and baked bean sides are probably my favorite sides to pair with that. It’s really not a debate when I’m in town working where I’m grabbing lunch or dinner.

We found this by accident. Boy, were we glad we did! This restaurant is 4 hours from where we live. We can't find anything near our home that can come close. It is that memorable. The meat is smoked to perfection and tender. BBQ sauce is optional and not really needed because the meat is so good. The atmosphere is casual and somewhat rustic. The prices are reasonable.

I'd heard a lot about this barbecue spot on a Facebook travel group, and on a recent "best of Chillicothe" day trip we stopped for lunch. Superb! The building doesn't look like much from the street, but once inside you have an attractive outer dining room with window walls, plus a smaller interior one that's more cozy. Our server, Leslie D, must be the dean of their front of house, she was high energy and attentive and chatty but not intrusive. I settledf in to a brisket sandwich with sweet potato fries, plus a nice local Jackie O's Ricky beer which matched up ideally. My wife went for the pulled pork sandwich and corn pudding, which I sampled. Leslie's level of service was matched by the skills and taste of their pitmaster and chef. That brisket had to have spent nearly a day in that smoke to be infused with so much great flavor, I only wanted a small drizzle of their sweet sauce on it, and the bun had been grilled. Those sweet potato fries were perhaps the best I've had, the chef had the taste to treat them like sweet potatoes and serve them thoroughly seasoned with cinnamon, and served wit a marshmallow dipping sauce that certainly invoked Thanksgiving casseroles. My wife's corn pudding was tasty but more the texture of kernel corn than pudding. I've been visiting a lot of 'cue places this week. This was the best.

When we arrived we were sat in a porch type of area that was freezing. I would have rather sat inside but I digress. We got the Pig Chips as an appetizer. The chips were tasteless and we only got one tiny dollop of sour cream. With such a large portion of chips being shared between 4 people it should come with more. We asked for extra without realizing we would be charged for it. Food wasn’t worth the price. Our waitress started out good but then seemed rushed so not sure if she had too many tables or what but she was slow to come back and check on us. She seemed annoyed when we said we wanted another drink. After that we never saw her again. Another server checked on us and even brought us our check. If I had seen the responses from the owner to customers reviews I would have NEVER eaten here in the first place. Im a small business owner myself and would never antagonize customers the way this person does. EXTREMELY unprofessional and just downright RUDE. Learn some customer service and how to take some constructive criticism. Attached are some pictures for reference.

We've been to Old Canal Smokehouse many times and it remains a favorite. Highlights include the long Island ice-teas made by Heidi and her wonderful personality. You can't beat the smoked meatloaf, armadillo egg appetizer, brisket Flatbread pizza, even their special ranch dressing for the salad ... but now to add to our list of greats is their Sweet Potato Cheesecake!! Go there, you won't be sorry.

Service was excellent! The waitress understood we had a bit of a time crunch and she accommodated us with a smile! She also knowledgeably explained the menu so we could make the right choices. The baby back ribs were as advertised by the server: delicious, tender, and falling off the bone. And the side dishes were also very tasty! We look forward to dining there again?
