This was the last place I expected to find a vegetarian option for myself after experiencing very limited options in the Gatlinburg area, but I am pleasantly surprised. The spicy tofu sandwich at the 321 location was a great meal for the non-meat eater in...the group.
The sandwich came with a toasted bun, a tomato slice, lettuce, mayo, and the tofu.
I will say, I’m not the biggest tofu fan for being a vegetarian, mostly for texture reasons, but this tofu was very good. It was firm but still soft, no complaints. The smoked outside had a bit of a chewier texture. Generally, the texture of the tofu hid behind the the other crunchy textures of the lettuce and toasted bun.
Even if I did have any issues with tofu itself, the sauce would completely negate them. Omg the SAUCE! It was a barbecue style sauce with a touch of spice. Great balance of sweet and salty. In some places the sauce actually caramelized around the tofu, these little pieces were to die for.
Last thing I will say is they do offer a vegan option with no mayo which I don’t thing would really change the deliciousness of the sandwich too much, however I do worry about the bun. I have a suspicion that they might toast the bun with butter. I wonder how they will treat the bun for a vegan request.
I know this review is a bit long-winded, but I wanted to give a very thorough review for this hidden-gem of a tofu sandwich. I think I will need to go back for this one more time before my vacation ends :)More
