The trout was good, but the sides needed a little work. The rice pilaf was served room temperature, the mushrooms and onions was in a small bowl of onions, and I only found one mushroom piece. My wife’s baked potato was good. We were supposed to have hush puppies with the meal, and it took repeated requests to get them. Dinner for two, including the tip was $70 and we only had iced tea to drink.

First of all, we drove into town from a cabin. Free parking across the street was very nice. We were greeted immediately and seated. Very friendly and quick service throughout. My wife and I each ordered grilled trout. It was amazingly good. There was an upcharge to add a salad as a side, and the salad was really basic. It certainly wasnt worth an upcharge. That was really the only negative...next time I know not to get a salad and to pick a different side item.

We tried Smoky Mountain Trout House for the first time on this trip. I had the fried catfish and my husband had the fried trout. It was very good and they have the best cole slaw I have ever tasted. If you stay at Rocky Waters they offer a discount card for Smoky Mountain Trout House.

Just visited this restaurant today. We were hoping to have something local and this place had great reviews. We went in and there was absolutely no masks in sight or other safe guards in place. My daughter went to bathroom and came back telling us how disgusting everything was in other parts of the restroom. On top of that they were going to charge us 6 dollars for a loaded baked potato and an upcharge for a salad. Needless to say we left without ordering anything but our drinks. I do not recommend going to this place at all.

Sorry to disappoint Tuttielane and KYRevswife. Our wait staff has medical cards, as displayed, not having to wear masks due to health reasons. As noted, the upstairs is under construction. Unfortunately! With the building being one of the oldest buildings in Gatlinburg and grand fathered in, the bathroom is upstairs, as many are, in the area. Our establishment is cleaned several times daily as 100’s of guests, go through our doors and use our facilities. We are proud to be chosen as Trip Advisors 2020 travelers choice award. Thanks for paying for your drinks.

Apparently The Trout House has a new owner and management - all for the worse. My family has enjoyed The Trout House for over 20 years, but are now no longer patrons. The information found online may pertain to the new or old management, so it's completely unreliable. We tried to call to make reservations as we always have, but the phone goes immediately to voicemail, which notifies you that voicemail is not setup. So we sat in traffic for 30 minutes to make reservations in person and were told 3 different things by 3 different people (all of which could use extensive customer service training). First, they said they can take reservations only under certain conditions, next we were told only for parties up to 6 (we have 7) and finally that they would not accept any reservations at all. I'm truly sorry to be removing The Trout House from our menu of staple options for dinner, but we really enjoyed the last 20 years under the previous management. Note to new Management: Obtain telephone service, update inaccurate information online, and please train your staff. Otherwise perhaps we'll look forward to adding The Trout House back to our list when the next owner buys it, because if even 10% of guests experience what we did today, it won't be long. Stay Safe Everyone!

Thank you for your response. Although we are new, this is our 5th year of ownership, and 45 year within our family. We apologize for your inconvenience, with the new regulations from the CDC. With us being of a smaller restaurant, our seating unfortunately is now even more limited. This is much to our dismay, but we understand for the safety of our guests and staff. The website online is not ours, and takes a very long time for it to be taken down. We are aware there are a few sites out there, as third parties take them and then it is very difficult to have taken down. Please know we are still working on this. We are on Facebook, Instagram, Trip Advisor and Yelp. We apologize for the miscommunication, as we do not take reservations, and it is, first come first serve. We will absolutely look into our phone system as we take several to go orders each evening, so we were unaware of any mishap with our phone. We appreciate your response and taking the time for this. We are always striving for improvements, to continue to be one of the top restaurants in Gatlinburg.
Blessings to you and your family, as stay safe.

After bragging how delicious the trout tastes at the Trout House, my friends and I purchased to go orders. Sadly the to go orders do not come with Hush Puppies and a $2 surcharge for side salad. We were told that the Hush Puppies are not on to go items. I have no earthly idea why but this is unacceptable after paying the same price. Not good and therefore not a good review from us despite the great tasting trout.😕

My wife's all time favorite place to eat trout.
We have been eating there whenever we visit Gatlinburg,, over 40 years.
The trout ''Eisenhower" is our favorite
Parking across the street is a BIG plus for downtown Gatlinburg.
Is a family run business,, and was treated like family while eating there last Saturday.
We drove 365 miles,, each way,,, just to eat there on a ''day trip''

We liked it so much, we had it twice during our 4 day visit. Jessie was our server both times. She was great. Very helpful. During both visits we had blackened trout, smoked trout, ribeye dinner. All sides we had were good. Favorite was hush puppies and chips served before meal.
It’s a very small place. Maybe 10 tables. But we loved how quaint it was. It’s not down in the busy area of downtown. Would highly recommend. And if you are staying at Rocky Waters Motor Inn, they have 20% off discount card for their guest.

We ordered our drinks...felt very funny about the atmosphere being dark, dingy and old. The smell of Lysol was so strong. In Tennessee, apparently there is no food grades posted so you can see how clean they are when serving and cooking food (NC has a food grade by inspectors posted by each register so you can decide whether the cleanliness is good enough for you to eat there. We do not go where their grade is less than a 92) We offered to pay for the drinks and they said not to worry about it and we left. They really need to spend some money and clean that place up and redo the decor!

Thank you for your concern terrinnc2018. Our health inspections, with our most recent on in April (Graded 98%) is on our wall about the register. All our decor is as per loyal guests requests, of fishing. Despite it being one of the oldest buildings in Gatlinburg and being the trouthouse since 1975, our kitchen, bathrooms and dining has been fully remodeled. The lighting is that, on purpose (dim) for a better dining experience. We have many guests that bring fishing souvenirs from their adventures, so decor will not be changed. Sorry to have disappointed.

There are several reviews that ding this place for mask/covid concerns. I felt the place safe, clean, and pleasant for my family of four. Do not expect in your face cosmetics or log cabin construction. Do expect a warm atmosphere with knowledgeable staff of the menu.
I had the blackened trout with backed sweet potato, awesome. Cooked to perfection with a great seasoning, the trout tasted fresh and delicious. The potato clearly had not set in a warmer all day and was very good.
My wife had the Eisenhower, superb cause I sample it strongly. She ordered a loaded baked potato and this place went all out in making sure it was "loaded."
My 8 year old had the kids cheeseburger, and it appear to be a 3/4 angus style burger, meat was fresh, cheese was thick cut, bun was toasted. Yeah, dad bought it so I tried it.
The chips served with hush puppies both appeared to be made onsite. Fresh hushpuppies with a sweet pepper sauce they put together for you was awesome. The chips are thick cut, crunchy and delicious.
The bathrooms are upstairs, were clean, and bright. They appear to be doing construction up there but as a work in progress it was as expected.
I thanked the waitress, and the hostess, for the apparent pride and passion they take in serving their customers. I also asked to speak to the cook, who I also thanked, and tipped directly.
I really wish I had ate their more than once, and look forward to eating there again.

Thank you so much Litenin77! We truly appreciate you eating with us and your great review. Fantastic to hear you enjoyed your visit and more importantly your meal. We do take great pride in our “small restaurant, with a big flare”(so we think). We are currently remodeling our upstairs dining area. We are working with a very old building (one of the oldest in Gatlinburg) and attempting to modernize, has had its challenges. We appreciate you noticing all of this and taking into consideration. We know we are not able to meet everyone’s needs and expectations, but we sure try our best. We can’t wait to see you and your family again. Stay safe.

My wife and I were in Gatlinburg TN this week and after riding the chair lift and crossing the expansion bridge decided we wanted a seafood dinner. So off to Smokey Mountain Trout House we go! Now if you want fine dining, dinner napkins with fine china place settings this is not your restaurant. If you want a fish camp decor and a somewhat dated restaurant with good food then this is your place!! I really liked the tapestry type wall decor. I had seen this pattern of material in quilt stores where my wife shops but had not seen it used as a partial wall covering. It was different and kind of nice.
we both had trout prepared differently (we do that sometimes when I plan to do a review) to experience two different types of trout preparations. Both or our dinners were very good. My wife had the Eisenhower trout (whole trout, deboned but left whole) I had the butterflied fried trout, fileted which was very good. Just the right amount of breading! Due to the cost of tea and soft drinks at all restaurants now we had water with lemon.
As I wrote previously this is a local seafood restaurant that has been around for a long long time. It is dated but the restaurant is clean, friendly and has good food!
There is an up-charge for a couple of the sides. The side salad with the blackberry vinaigrette dressing was excellent and worth an extra dollar. I recommend this restaurant.

This unassuming family run restaurant is very casual and serves a very limited selection of beer and wine. It specializes in trout and its trout is spectacular. We had broiled rainbow trout and The Eisenhower trout. Both dishes were perfectly cooked. We had a side of the breaded fried mushrooms these also were perfectly prepared and the temperature was spot on. The Trout House is a straightforward no frills restaurant that serves up fantastic trout dinners! It is also exceedingly good value for money.

Lisa was able to sell me on the restaurant when I called before getting to Gatlinburg. She told me that the ten different varieties of trout were quite special and we would have plenty to eat – all true. We managed to get in on a Friday night at around 8 PM without any delay, and it was definitely worth it.
There’s class and classiness in this 56-year-old rustic restaurant whose focus is on a versatile, local fish that many of us only eat when someone with exemplary cooking skills happens to be in the kitchen. Here, the options for preparation were impressive, and it was fun choosing among them for the house specialty rather than deciding whether to have chicken, beef, or pasta.
Our server seated us quickly and delivered a bowl of tater puffs and excellent homemade potato chips. No draft beer, so we went with water, but that worked well when the fish ultimately arrived. Mine was the scrumptious Ole Smoky, hickory smoked, crispy trout lightly filled with bacon and served with a side of mixed sauteed mushrooms and onions. I was entitled to two more, so I added a sweet potato – which came the ‘southern’ way with extra butter and brown sugar on the side – and fried okra. I know now for sure that fried okra just isn’t for me, but that’s not the restaurant’s fault. I’m sure there are plenty of folks here up north and down south who love it. My son had the simpler grilled trout with the same sides. His was less crispy but, not surprisingly, more delicate. The server gave him a few helpful tips on the proper techniques for deboning trout.
Overall, pricing for meals at Smoky Mountain was less than elsewhere in town. Noise level wasn’t excessive though not romantic either. The place was 75% full, and some patrons even wore masks. Service was a tad ‘forgetful’, and the menu options (such as extra cost for salad) were confusing on the menu, but that didn’t really matter. People were so pleasant – it was a bona fide happy place. Likewise, payment was completely electronic, painless, and tableside, and we managed to get in and out faster than a jack rabbit in heat. Bottom line, we really liked our meal and hereby recommend this restaurant to people visiting Gatlinburg.

Our family of six, including Mom, Dad, Nana & 16, 14 & 11 had a great experience here. On a busy Sunday night in the tourist mecca, it was refreshing to find this hidden gem, right off Parkway that even offered free parking!
The decor was homey. I understand they are working to remodel the upstairs, but downstairs looked like the old fish cabin.
The food was amazing and creative; we had three different kinds of trout - but they also did great steak, chicken and salad. The hushpuppy and chip basket was an unexpected delight. Even Nana who is not experienced with freshwater fish said it was some of the best fish she has eaten. Sides and salad were also good.
The service was perfect and the servers were so kind and helpful.
Definitely recommend if you like a family place that is reasonably priced for a lot of good food!

Most people where I live (Alabama) associate a fish dinner with either catfish or saltwater fish. It's rare to find bass, bream, crappie, trout, et al on a restaurant menu so when I was visiting Gatlinburg, I made it a point to visit the Smokey Mountain Trout House. Dining space is limited so the atmosphere feels intimate. Our server was attentive and very pleasant. I ordered the Grilled Trout and it was a large filet (watch out for small bones along the fin lines) and cooked to perfection. It was very tasty. My baked potato side was huge! This is not a fancy, gourmet dining spot but it is a good, simple place to eat in the heart of Gatlinburg.
