About
Claro is where New York and Oaxaca meet – the result of chef/owner T.J. Steele’s long-time love for Oaxacan food and culture. Over his many years in Oaxaca, TJ cultivated relationships with local craftsmen, artists, mezcaleros, cooks and farmers throughout the region. Claro is dedicated to making everything by hand, including the masa, cheeses, chorizo and moles. TJ sources the corn for Claro's menu from farms that hand-pick non-GMO heirloom (criollo) varieties, all our meat and produce is organic and our menu is entirely gluten-free. “Claro” means “clear” in many different senses, but also “of course” -a phrase that’s used to put a person at ease; a sentiment that permeates the style of dining we hope to share with you. The soul of Claro extends beyond the menu, having called on Oaxacan friends to add their craft and expertise to all areas of the restaurant.
MICHELIN Guide: Good cooking
The mood is warm and boisterous at this vibrant spot for Oaxacan cuisine. A smattering of tables, bar counter and wood-fired oven lend a neighborhood feel. The menu changes frequently to reflect the seasons and ranges from traditional dishes to creative riffs on the classics. Masa is one of the cornerstones of the kitchen, stone ground in house from Oaxacan criollo corn and hand shaped into diverse specialties ranging from tortillas and tlayudas to memelas, finished on a wood-fired comal. A dizzying variety of mezcal is on offer, including suggested pairings for each course.

I was looking forward to this evening. It's not every day that you go to a Michelin-star Oaxacan restaurant with a pairing of Mezcal. There were 4 of us, so we took 4 different tasting menus to be able to taste everything. Excellent first course, especially for the tomato and tuna dish. In the second service we paid extra for the bone marrow, really very good. Third served, the mole, all differ with their particularity, a preference for the verde. The desserts were to bring. Food-wise, it's very good, but I expected more. The service, while friendly, made a few mistakes, probably due to understaffing, which affects the experience. For the atmosphere, it's very good, I recommend the terrace. Finally, for the Mezcal tastings, I personally find the prices much too high, around $45 for 3 glasses of 1oz, it's expensive. It is clearly a festive restaurant to eat well with friends, I have a good time, but because of the high prices, service errors and that out of 12 dishes, although they are all good, very few stood out from a restaurant of this level, it is probably not a place that I will return.

We went with my Italian family to Claro with some hesitation, also because entering is not easy, always full! Very small but very cozy great food and we drank a great wine evening of good taste all very spicy but cooked to a work of art Recommended!

Put aside your Michelin star expectations and consider the amazing value of the tasting menu. I'm not sure I'd give them a star, but that's not for me for decide. But I'd probably put them in the BIB category. But they're still easily 5 star. The food is simple in theory but complex in execution. For the first course we had the tostada and the Aguachile. The tostada was great with earthy seasonings pairing excellently with red and yellow beets, cheese and cilantro. The aguachile was the only the dish I had a problem with, and I truly recommend not ordering it. I LOVE and crave spicy, and in fairness they warn you it's spicy, but it's so spicy in a completely unnecessary way. If the rest of the menu had some heat it would make sense, but instead it's just over the top heat that drowns out all the flavor. The second course contained my favorite dish, the venison garnachas. This is just about as good as food gets. Venison and a flavorful warm tomato sauce and topped with sheep's milk cheese. So fragrant I was taking long deep sniffs before each bite like a freak. Major Wow factor. The barbacoa tacos were fabulous, and most likely the best you'll ever eat, but they couldn't compete with the venison. The pork mole rojo and duck mole negro were great, and completely different versions, of mole the like of which I've not had outside of Mexico City. The duck mole was a bit sweeter while the pork mole was a bit earthier and smokier. For dessert we ordered chocolate mole cake. We also ordered the mezcal ice cream, two separate dishes that we loved pairing together. Super casual atmosphere(wear almost anything you want within reason)and we loved dining outside. The service was fun, unpretentious, friendly and personal. Great experience, highly recommended, especially if you've never had upscale Mexican cuisine.

Dined here just before Christmas on the spur of the moment and the experience was phenomenal. The service was outstanding; it was engaging and personable but still professional. The food was outstanding, especially the tuna, venison, tinga tacos, octopus, and sea bass. It was varied and very flavorful. The mezcal was from another world. Our server, Paloma, was passionate about mezcal, and she kept recommending different types and flights to try. The lead mezcal steward also came by and recommended certain types. None of the recommendations were off-base. The flavor profile of mezcal is much different than wine, but the variety of notes in each taste was very similar. We were sated and very happy by the end of the evening, and it was one of the most unique and unexpectedly magical meals we have had in a long time. Everything was flawless.

The world is filled with “Mexican” restaurants with American expectations: guacamole, tacos etc. But there are a few places that take their Mexican roots and raise the bar to fine cuisine. Claro is among the best examples. Now offering a four course price fixe menu with four choices for each course you can be sure every plate is a winner. With an extensive Mezcal list and thoughtful cocktails, this place has it all. Great service. Quiet and contemplative atmosphere this is a true gem.

I’m in NYC for a visit. My daughter, granddaughter and I dined at Claro for Brunch on Good Friday. Our table was in a small alcove to the left of the door. It was perfect for us and we didn’t encounter anyone other than the service staff. We were asked at checkin to mask whenever the servers approached the table which we were very happy with. The pre fixe menu was so reasonable for a one Michelin star restaurant. The variety was quite good and their version of a Bloody Mary, Maria Ahumada, was fantastic!!!! I highly recommend Claro,

Excellent attention was given to covid restrictions. The place is very eclectic, with lovely décor and unique dishware, The food was outstanding as it was made with ingredients that gave wonderful Oaxacan flavors to each dish. The options for our four course dinners were excellent. Fantastic desserts, Not to forget the wonderful mezcal margaritas and a fee other other unique cocktails (hibiscus). Dinner was as good as fine dining in Mexico. Great place to celebrate birthdays.

I wasn’t impressed. The brunch menu was ok. The food was well executed but wasn’t particularly original. Most annoying and uncomfortable in these Covid times was the waiter bumped my chair once and then bumped me on the back of the head while trying — unnecessarily — to stay away from the neighboring table. I felt that he was often in my space. I think this restaurant might deserve a Michelin bib, but definitely not a Michelin star.

This was our second visit to Claro and the second visit was even better than the first. They have a pre fixe for four courses at $75. There are about 4 or 5 selections from each group, including vegetarian options. The food boarders on fine dining. Lots of interesting flavors and every bit is a pleasant surprise. Service is good too.

Myself and my partner celebrated my birthday here over dinner and could not be happier. The food was authentic, unique and all around superb. The service was impeccable and the environment was absolutely lovely - definitely get a table outside if you can. Would highly recommend the Tostada de Esquites and Mole Negro!

We went because it had a Michelin star and we were intrigued. The price is reasonable. I tried to be open minded and try food outside my comfort zone. Is was a bit too different for me. I’m glad I tried it but wouldn’t go back.

When you go to a Michelin star restaurant you expect to have somewhat attentive service. Our waiter was nowhere to be seen. We had to flag down others to take our orders and requests. An appetizer came after an entree was served. The service was so off - I get better service in a dive bar. The tuna tostadas were amazing. Next time I order 2 and make it my entree. The emoladas were ok, not great. Menu had far too many meats and moles. Not much variety. I’ve been to Claro before twice - pre Covid and last year- and I prefer the old menu. The margaritas were ok, not out of this world as I recall they were before. Bill came to 250 USD for two and I didn’t find value in that. We will not return.

This is a high end Mexican restaurant. We had our food and cocktails delivered-both were excellent, and the order was accurate and on time.
