We asked the concierge at our hotel for good seafood and local cooking, and he recommended the River House. Great location and we had a table by the window where we could watch the ships going by. It was a rainy and cool day, and ambiance indoors was lovely and cozy with all the stone and ancient wood beams. I had the fried green tomatoes which were lovely and tangy, followed by the shrimp and grits, which was undoubtedly the best I have ever had. My husband had the snapper lunch special, which was beautifully presented on a bed of creamy rice and lovely vegetables. We were both very impressed with our meals, and the portions were very large, especially for lunch. Was tempted by the pecan pie and peach cobbler, but no room! Only little negative was the cost of draft beer at $5.

The restaurant is on River Street so you have a great view of ships going by. My husband has diet issues and the restaurant was very accommodating. I had the fried shrimp and it was the best. We had Nora for our waitress and she was knowledgeable and friendly and wonderful to wrk with. You also must try the Chatham Military Punch. Delicious. Coming from the New York City area we found the prices to be very reasonable.

We were visiting Savannah with friends and asked around a bit of the locals for a great place for dinner. The River House came up consistently. We were not disappointed! The menu was diverse, so our one friend who didn't like seafood found plenty to choose from. Those of us who loved seafood were truly not neglected. The bar service was top notch, and our waiter was well trained and knowledgeable. The prices (mid-$20s through mid $30s for entrees) were really not bad at all. Eat the fried green tomatoes! A lovely twist served on a bed of house made pimento cheese.

I ordered the snapper special. After a lengthly wait the fish came and I tried to take a bite with a fork as you normally would with well cooked fish. Finally resorted to a knife and sawed off a piece. Couldn't chew it. Server finally came by and offered to replace the fish. Brought a better piece about the size of a McDonald's fish sandwich. Tasted better but my wife ordered the scallops and one of the four had to be cut and it was too tough to eat. Normally in this situation the manager would come by and offer to reduce the bill, offer a dessert or something. The only thing we got was the server saying "sorry about that". I would not recommend this place.

If you are not from a region with quality seafood you may be fine going to this production line restaurant.
Made a reservation so we didn’t have a wait that went fine - after that not so much. Ordered a cosmopolitan at the bar that tasted like vodka topped with vodka and the bartenders customer service was poor.
The best part of the meal was the fried green tomatoes. Crisp and delicious with a tasty sauce and crumbled feta. Should have walked out after the appetizers.
The “grouper” florentine served over the most tasteless grits ever was obviously frozen as there where cold pockets throughout the filet and it was most likely tile fish. Lots of tomatoes all over a dish that is known for spinach.
They use tomatoes at this restaurant on the shrimp and grits was way over the top but tomatoes are cheap so it makes sense. The shrimp where chewy and overcooked and zero flavor in the sauce. Actually no sauce just a bunch on bland tomatoes.
Being from the south we know how to make grits - the grits at this place tasted like nothing with absolutely no seasoning - embarrassing that this restaurant can’t make the most basic staple of southern fare.
The waitress was friendly.
With all of the choices in Savannah we should have known better than to pick a place on the river when there are so many other high quality choices one block over.

I try not to be super critical of restaurants I try for the first time but... the lack of attention was quite poor. The gentleman seating us acted as if we were bothering him when we stepped up to inquire about a table for dinner (I chocked this up to maybe he was just having a bad day, no problem). We sat down and ordered drinks and an appetizer and my plate had a large chip missing on it. This may sound somewhat strange but after I ordered the appetizer it came to the table in about 2 minutes, this short time leads me to wonder if my appetizer was premade sitting under a heat lamp. I ordered the crab stuffed flounder and found it lack luster at best with a plating not really to be desired. My girlfriend had the "signature dish" Savannah Paella, it was super dry with zero flavor. To top off the dinner I tried the crème brulee it was not very good as well. It unfortunately had the flavor of everything from the chill chest where I am assuming it came from judging by how nearly ice cold it was. Not to be too harsh, the waitress we had was very polite and on top of her customers needs. I personally found the meal more like a fast-food seafood dining experience. It is a nice location right on the river but I would move on to the next seafood spot in the future. I hope that my experience is not the norm for everyone. Thanks.

This is my first and hopefully last one star review I ever give, but after much thought, felt it was appropriate to let others know of our experience. There are far too many great restaurants in Savannah to waste time or money here.
First, we went to the restaurant on a very slow night with few people mingling in the streets, so making a reservation never crossed our mind. When we got there, a very rude gentleman said they are booked solid all week but he would 'fit us in' within 45 minutes or so. We walked around and then went back when paged to find we were 1 of 2 tables with any guests in the entire area. We just laughed at how pretentious he was to act like they were some sought after restaurant . We ordered and here is where the problems began: The French Onion Soup was clear with a hunk of cheese down in it, the Bisque was less than lukewarm - almost cold, the rolls were frozen white rolls not heated all the way through, the salad with 'famous homemade croutons' had the cheapest store bought croutons and the server said 'does it say homemade on the menu!?!' (yes, it does), but even those we could overlook, but the live bug crawling in the salad was too much for me, even if it 'flew in' like the server suggested (it could have, again, not a huge deal - just take it away and bring another one) but that the manager didn't walk over and check on us was surprising and the man who was at the host stand when we first arrived, stood behind us glaring at us after the salad went back. For the record, we did NOT make a fuss about it, whispered to the server so the other table didn't know there was a bug in our food and didn't ask for any type of compensation - so there was NO reason to be treated rudely by him. The rest of our food was mediocre. Overall, just really stunned and disappointed from beginning to end with this restaurant.

The best part of this restaurant is the location. It was recommended by a local resident, and my wife made reservations telling them it was my birthday. We were disappointed by the food quality. It was “just ok”...more fast food seafood, certainly not fine dining quality. The worse part was the manager came over at the end of the meal to inquire about the food. We were in the middle of dessert and my wife politely shared that her peach cobbler was “mushy”...seemed to have been made days ago. The manager had been told it was my birthday (however server told my wife they did not have any candles) and the manager kindly wished me Happy Birtbday. We were surprised when we receive the bill ....we were charged for BOTH of our desserts! No plans to return.

First of all, I was told I would receive 2 texts, one to let me know I was on the list and then one when the table was ready. I realized 0 min into my so called 45 min wait, I didn’t receive the first text. Everyone was complaining about the wait because it was longer than expected. My grouper was dry and awful tasting so sent it back. My husband got the lump crab cakes and I must say they were good. However he had finished eating and received a to go box and my 2nd dish hadn’t came out yet. So I noticed the manager apologizing and servicing a table near us where one of the ladies got up and refilled their drinks herself and they were complaining about waiting on the food this time. The manager offered to pay for their appetizer and dessert. However the food was so awful to them that they didn’t eat it and declined the FREE dessert. He took care of them but it took him forever to come to my table even though I didn’t ask for him, he was aware I sent my grouper back. He didn’t offer me anything! I told the waitress to cancel my order and we left. On the way out, we saw another large family that we were waiting with on the outside and they were complaining about the food. If I pay 5 star prices I expect my food to taste 5 star! Never AGAIN! I’ve noticed Savannah’s food isn’t the same and Covid could have affected it but this restaurant is NOT worth the money or time!!

River Street is the obvious draw in downtown Savannah and accentuated by some fabulous eating spots.River House is certainly one of them.
Greeted by friendly staff at the door and entering into a basement-like comfortably cozy environment makes this a great start. Big shout-out to Jameson at the well-stocked bar and his excellent service with drinks and food. The OYSTERS SAVANNAH ($12) was a lovely app of 6 covered in a slightly picante panko crust and washed down by a delicious (...and extremely well priced ...) pint of Two Tides local brew...this was a great stop.

Spent nearly 100 on cold food and bad service. There was no real flavor to the sides beyond coming out cold and seeming like they had been made days prior. Fried green tomatoes were burnt on some then placed to where it wasnt seen unless you flipped it over. Crab cakes were decent and steak was good but had a heck of a time cutting it with a knife and plastic fork;ended up holding the steak with my fingers. The staff was pretty flighty and kept our card.. hostess tried to give it to someone else..and manager was rude when we went to get it back.. tried to tell about our service and he didnt seem too interested.. needless to say will never return to this resturant.

For us locals who know the good, the bad, ….this is the place to bring your out-of-town friends for a wonderful experience of old Georgia historical ambiance, beautiful views of the Savannah River (we had a container ship go by) and superb food and drinks. The local catch Red Snapper was to die for! Our waitress, Latisha, was well versed in the menu and had great recommendations all of which proved to be well respected. We all had the bread pudding as dessert which topped off a wonderful experience. We live in Rincon, GA, 20 miles to the restaurant, and whenever it is an evening in Savannah, THe River Street Seafood is our choice. Oh, did i mentioned that the prices are very reasonable for a tourist city!

We had fried green tomatoes to start, which were perfectly breaded (not too much) with delicious sauce and goat cheese topping. We also had oysters, which were perfect. Then, we split Dungeness crabs, boiled shrimp, and fried lobster tails. All were fantastic! The service is nondescript, but the view and food can't be beat. Also, I really liked their special punch. I would recommend this place if visiting Savannah.

Use the reservations on line! Pleasant, Quiet place on River Street. We sat down and looked at the menu and was surprised at the prices. We almost got up and left, what a gem we would have missed out on. After we got over the sticker shock, my wife ordered the Braised short ribs and shared it with her friend. I ordered shrimp and sausage gumbo and my buddy had the salmon with sweet potato and collards. Everything we had was over the top good. Just how good, we were still talking about it the next day. If you want some really good food at a great location go to the River House and don't worry about the price, it's worth every dime and then some.

What a wonderful dinner! Two couples, we all ordered something different, and everyone raves about how great their food was. The staff was great. We called because we were having a little trouble getting there due to road construction (and not being familiar with the area) and they held our reservation for us. Awesome experience.
