We were so excited to get reservations to the restaurant. We were greeted and seated by a gracious host. The service and attention to details was outstanding. Our food was excellent. The wine suggestion complemented my meal perfectly. It was a pleasurable experience.

A low point in an otherwise great tour of the Hudson River Valley. We expected delicious food at CIA and were SO disappointed, having traveled from the west coast for this meal. First courses were fine -- panzanella, vongole pasta -- but main courses were...mediocre at best. Poached branzino was fishy-tasting, the kale was tough/chewy. Chicken mediocre. Chick pea cakes greasy with no flavor. Risotto and grilled swordfish were fine but not exceptional. The best plates were dessert. We gave the waiter some polite feedback regarding the branzino in particular, but he offered no apology nor offered to fix the problem in some way. So we cancelled our other pending reservations for CIA restaurants; quite a let-down. 'Just didn't trust that the kitchens would be any better. CIA, please step up your game!More

We were greeted by our server as soon as we were seated. We asked for a wine list and she promptly delivered. Both of us chose Minestrone for our appetizer and looked just like what we ate in Italy, the colors were vibrant. My husband...had ravioli for his entree and not only was it tasty the presentation was very nice. I chose Branzino and it was excellent. Dessert was Gelato and Biscotti! We truly felt like we were back in Italy, the restaurant is lovely.More

Four of us dined at the Caterina de Medici Ristorante on their last night for the season while on vacation in the area. We booked months in advance. The students did an excellent job. The restaurant itself provides a beautiful ambiance. The service was outstanding...and the food was very good, including appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The other Culinary Institute restaurants (one French and one American) are fixed price, but this one is not. Expect to spend $75-$100 per person all in with drinks. A gratuity is built into the price. It is difficult to call any meal at that price a 'good value' but you do get what you pay for in the dining experience. I would like to try the CIA's other restaurants someday but we live 600 miles away, which is a bit far to go for dinner!More

My wife and I dined at the restaurant during a recent vacation through the Hudson Valley. We had a wonderful dinner. I can recommend the grilled octopus appetizer (Aleppo, Fava Bean “Hummus,” Pepper and Olive Dressing) and my wife and I both had the Pappardelle...Ragu d' Anitra (Duck, Marsala, Herbs). I am on a restricted low-salt diet, and the chefs did an amazing job of preparing my meal without salt. The staff are all students in training and incredibly attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. I would return to this restaurant without hesitation if I am ever in the area.More

My brother attended the CIA in the 80's and my parents have dined here in addition to the other CIA restaurants. They always raved about it. I finally was able to secure a reservation for my husband and I a few weeks ago. The food...was delicious. The portions are not very big as is always the case in these upscale dining establishments. However, all courses were incredible. The service was amazing.More

We visited the Caterina de' Medici in late January to celebrate my wife's birthday. With the uncertainty in weather we opted to go for lunch. Overall we were very impressed with the total experience at Caterina and would highly recommend this CIA Italian eatery. That...day the restaurant offered a winter "prix fixe" lunch menu consisting of appetizer, entree, and dessert which we decided to try. In addition, the regular full Italian offering was available. My wife ordered the Beet Carpaccio, Pork Scalappine, and Sorbetti selection, while I opted for the Mushroom Risotto, Braised Veal, and Warm Lava Cake. Each dish was uniquely delicious in itself, in ample portions, and offered a different taste and texture. The food was served warm with plenty of time between courses so you never felt rushed. Our favorites were the risotto and scalappine which were both outstanding The wine list at Caterina is quite extensive and covers the full range of prices. For each vintage they recommend both a high end and moderate selection. For the record, we ordered the moderate California Chardonnay which was truly exceptional and thus a great value. Being a CIA restaurant, the staff are all students supervised by their faculty counterparts. They were all highly attentive and very professional in going about their tasks. Overall they couldn't do enough for us and each person had a unique story as to how they got there. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Caterina and we intend to come back again. Make sure to get on the CIA mailing list as they offer special programs and events throughout the year for all their restaurants. Lastly, special thanks and good luck to Benjamin our server......More

I selected Caterina de Medici to celebrate the birthday of my partner. We had been to the Culinary before, and had a wonderful meal at American Bounty. Since we both appreciate Italian cuisine, I thought this would be a great place to visit. I was...sooooo wrong. World renown? Surely you jest. It is like Olive Garden without the bread sticks. The food was literally of food court quality, thoughtlessly prepared and presented. Upon arrival, we were told the menu was limited to just the items for pasta night, with no real options. Menus were folded paper a la fast food Italian places. The environment itself was quite disappointing; beginning with a tacky display of retail items in the foyer. Inappropriate music was playing (Muzak), punctuated by a noisy kitchen. The wait service exceeded the food in terms of poor preparation. Servers appeared confused, inexperienced, and poorly trained even for a budget mom and pop restaurant. As a teaching institution, this was really embarrassing. We were rushed throughout dinner by multiple servers who while charming were clearly not being appropriately trained/mentored. The final insult was really awful cappuccino, and a bill north of $160.00 for two. Simply dreadful. I cannot recommend more strongly that you go elsewhere. CIA clearly has jumped the shark in terms of quality. Someone is asleep at the wheel. If CIA would like the gory details, I would be happy to provide them. I will not return.More

Great room, wonderful and friendly staff, nice menu for the all-you-can-eat pasta night. Excellent start. The best part of the meal was the salad and the charcuterie. Excellent indeed, and this may be the place you would consider a second helping. The burrata was wonderful...and the combination of everything presented worked well with the salad as an accompaniment. The pasta dishes were basically all presented at the table in a hot skillet with sometimes hot ingredients, but not always!. The food was served all onto a large plate so that you wound up with 5 different pastas on one plate. Not how I would have done this. The risotto had a few meager shrimp and it was very spicy. The pasta with mushrooms had mushroom specs. Many dishes came luke-warm and undercooked. We were disappointed.More

While visiting in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. had the pleasure of dining at the world renown CIA (Culinary Institute of America) restaurant "Ristorante Caterina de' Medici", one of a group of restaurants of the culinary arts school. Here students get to put their training together in preparing...and serving exquisite pre-fixe and full menus for your consumption. The service was well focused on our needs and wishes and our meal was a pasta delight. If you're nearby stop and treat your taste-buds to a delicious treat. Reservations are required.More

Our family had dinner at the Caterina de'Medici restaurant and really enjoyed the experience. All of the food was delicious and well prepared. At this time of year they are running pasta dinners which is a fixed menu and is a great way to experience...a lot of different dishes. All of the staff were very professional and attentive. These are all students and besides their normal classes they are performing as wait staff at this restaurant. They were all knowledgeable about the food and provided excellent service. The restaurant gets double bonus points for accommodating my daughter's request for vegetarian cuisine. Even though, four of the five pastas served were not vegetarian, the chef created an individual vegetarian version of each of those four pasta dishes just for her. She was absolutely elated with this presentation and was amazed with the food. It shows the immense talent of the kitchen to transform these dishes on the fly. Just prior to the restaurant, we took the four o'clock tour of the campus. I highly recommend this as well as it really prepares you for a meal at the CIA. It is fantastic to see the students going through the incredibly diverse training in so many different kitchens first and then experience a meal which is the result of that training. Make sure to make reservations well in advance. The restaurants and tours are very popular.More

Went there to celebrate a special anniversary and was not greeted by hostess upon arrival. We tried the pasta dinner and the antipasto was decent but the Salad was wilted and overdressed. Our 5 pasta sampling’s were disappointing as they were either over salted, bland,...or cold. The dessert was delicious, although it was only bread pudding. The server was attentive and friendly.More
