We visited the Caterina de' Medici in late January to celebrate my wife's birthday. With the uncertainty in weather we opted to go for lunch. Overall we were very impressed with the total experience at Caterina and would highly recommend this CIA Italian eatery. That day the restaurant offered a winter "prix fixe" lunch menu consisting of appetizer, entree, and dessert which we decided to try. In addition, the regular full Italian offering was available. My wife ordered the Beet Carpaccio, Pork Scalappine, and Sorbetti selection, while I opted for the Mushroom Risotto, Braised Veal, and Warm Lava Cake. Each dish was uniquely delicious in itself, in ample portions, and offered a different taste and texture. The food was served warm with plenty of time between courses so you never felt rushed. Our favorites were the risotto and scalappine which were both outstanding The wine list at Caterina is quite extensive and covers the full range of prices. For each vintage they recommend both a high end and moderate selection. For the record, we ordered the moderate California Chardonnay which was truly exceptional and thus a great value. Being a CIA restaurant, the staff are all students supervised by their faculty counterparts. They were all highly attentive and very professional in going about their tasks. Overall they couldn't do enough for us and each person had a unique story as to how they got there. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Caterina and we intend to come back again. Make sure to get on the CIA mailing list as they offer special programs and events throughout the year for all their restaurants. Lastly, special thanks and good luck to Benjamin our server......

Four of us dined at the Caterina de Medici Ristorante on their last night for the season while on vacation in the area. We booked months in advance. The students did an excellent job. The restaurant itself provides a beautiful ambiance. The service was outstanding and the food was very good, including appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The other Culinary Institute restaurants (one French and one American) are fixed price, but this one is not. Expect to spend $75-$100 per person all in with drinks. A gratuity is built into the price. It is difficult to call any meal at that price a 'good value' but you do get what you pay for in the dining experience. I would like to try the CIA's other restaurants someday but we live 600 miles away, which is a bit far to go for dinner!

My wife and I dined at the restaurant during a recent vacation through the Hudson Valley. We had a wonderful dinner. I can recommend the grilled octopus appetizer (Aleppo, Fava Bean “Hummus,” Pepper and Olive Dressing) and my wife and I both had the Pappardelle Ragu d' Anitra (Duck, Marsala, Herbs). I am on a restricted low-salt diet, and the chefs did an amazing job of preparing my meal without salt. The staff are all students in training and incredibly attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. I would return to this restaurant without hesitation if I am ever in the area.

I have traveled around the world extensively and love great food! This restaurant was a disappointment. I have eaten at all of the restaurants at the institute, and sadly, this was not just my least favorite, but it was average at best. I could not believe that the school runs this restaurant! The pizza…a basic dish…was not good. The cheese was yummy, but the crust was not. I have had much better frozen pizza time after time. My husband’s risotto was very good, I wish I had ordered it…not great…but very good. I ordered branzino. It was dry and average at best. The artichokes that came with it were literally not edible. My first bit left me chewing for over a minute until I had to spit it out in a tissue. My meal was not enjoyable. For dessert, my husband had gelato which was overly flavored to lip puckering proportions. My chocolate dessert included a too tart fruit embellishment on the side ice cream cup that turned my stomach, and a bottom cake layer that also had an ingredient that took quite a long time to chew. (I am not understanding why this, and the artichoke, were not chewable…it is strange and unacceptable…and yes…my teeth are fine!). The student waiters were kind but we found it odd that there were numerous ones were literally just hanging around the bar. It looked very disheveled and not like they were being lead properly to work anywhere other than a chain restaurant. Lastly, taking our drink glasses to refill rather than replacing them also lends to the chain atmosphere and is tacky for a culinary school of this caliber (so we thought). I was so very disappointed, as was my husband. We may or may not visit the other restaurants on campus again, but if we do it is only due to the lack of decent places to eat in the area when we visit West Point (Alma Mater)…the French and American restaurants on campus were very good, but sadly, after this visit, the CIA’s Italian restaurant joined the ranks of the lack of decent places in the area today….as did their bakery btw…which was horrible.

We really enjoyed our meal here at the Italian option of the CIA restaurants. It’s a beautiful setting on this gorgeous campus, and I would recommend arriving 25 minutes early and walking around before going to the restaurant. The food was excellent, including a great pomodoro appetizer, a rice/peppers/Guinea hen entree, and two amazing desserts. They even invited us back to see the kitchen. The staff are all students, and many of them are adorable as they are learning their craft but are still in the awkward early adult/late adolescent phase. Service and the food were very good. I’ve seen other reviews complain about the price and about smaller portions. To me, the quality is worth the price, and the portions are what they typically are with Italian fine dining (first plates are smaller, second plates are bigger but not full USA entree sized). Also, in lieu of tips, which the student interns cannot receive, the restaurant places a 20% service charge that goes to student scholarships. Some reviews complained about this, but a 20% charge is close to what you’d tip anyway.

If you are food lover, then this is a must. The menu and food are outstanding and knowing that it is being prepared by an all student staff makes it an extra special experience. Our food was prepared perfectly and the presentation was fabulous. The wait staff were also students, so you have to give them a pass for some missed attention to details. All in all a great experience.

Went to celebrate my best friend’s birthday. Was delighted to discover they had a winter weekday lunch special of 3 courses for $29. 5 or 6 selections for appetizers and entrees - Including vegetarian options. Food and Service were excellent. Would love to return in the Spring as the grounds are lovely.

My brother attended the CIA in the 80's and my parents have dined here in addition to the other CIA restaurants. They always raved about it. I finally was able to secure a reservation for my husband and I a few weeks ago. The food was delicious. The portions are not very big as is always the case in these upscale dining establishments. However, all courses were incredible. The service was amazing.

We were greeted by our server as soon as we were seated. We asked for a wine list and she promptly delivered. Both of us chose Minestrone for our appetizer and looked just like what we ate in Italy, the colors were vibrant. My husband had ravioli for his entree and not only was it tasty the presentation was very nice. I chose Branzino and it was excellent. Dessert was Gelato and Biscotti! We truly felt like we were back in Italy, the restaurant is lovely.

We went once and the food was so good that we want to have reservation for the next night. Unfortunately, they were booked to the brims. The service was excellent and, the food, very pleasant to the palate. I requested the Lasagnette ai Funghi, the Risotto agli Asparagi and, of course, the Tiramisu. My children and my husband appetizer was the pizza. The only thing that I can say is our table became silent after the first bite, followed by a subtle hmmm from my children. The Tiramisu was prepared differently than what anyone expected. Is, as our server explained, a Deconstructed Tiramisu. The flavor is almost the same, but the texture differ. It is a savory novelty. Overall, it was an excellent culinary experience.

Food: pretty good. Service: not so good, our waiter was incredibly nervous and had a lot of trouble keeping track of our order. The Institute itself is almost impossible to navigate on a dark, rainy night. Finding the highway after we left the garage took us a long, long time. The place needs better road signs.

A little pricey for a training restaurant. $263 with required “fin-aid tip” for 4 with 1 app, entree, and 1 drink each. But beautiful campus.

Food was OK but portion sizes were very small. Desert was questionable. Not really sure what was in it. Left wanting more food.

Unfortunately this restaurant needs better supervision both with the wait staff and the chefs. I realize that these are students, however this group takes the cake. We are not first timers. Let me start with the food. The duck was tough and chewy. The pasta came out cold. The river was undercooked and the pork was over cooked. So much for the entrees. We had to remind them to bring the drinks and coffee was offered after we received the bill. The meals came out all delivered to the wrong person, and after eating the staff came by a second time with another entree. I could go on. At these prices, and having the establishment add a 20% grat is unacceptable. Never again
