Good food and ambience (but short of great)

Authentic Cuban food in this apparently family run resto. Has a cozy neighborhood feel and no nonsense service. I had the ceviche of the day (unlisted price but they charged $15 for blanched shrimp and squid rings with vinegar and bell peppers). I must say I expected something more striking from... read more

Ill leave this pending for now... Wanted to eat there on new years day for brunch. I have been doing this traditionally for a few years now. When I called to make a reservation, they told me I had to sign a contract, which was strange because I never had to do this before but I like the place so... More

I had the ceviche of the day (unlisted price but they charged $15 for blanched shrimp and squid rings with vinegar and bell peppers). I must say I expected something more striking from fresh (raw) fish and more spicy peppers. After that... More

If having a very flavorful glass of Sangria ($5) during a meal is meaningful to you, I suggest that you ask the waiter to serve the ice separate from the Sangria, as I did after I was served (and sent back) a glass of Sangria that was visibly watered down due to ice melting in it. The thing to do... More

It took me years (why?) to discover this modest, friendly local resto with an almost joyous vibe and some delicious soul warming food. Been there several happy times in the past month with visitors from the US and abroad. The restaurant is twice the size it first as bhind one wall there is a cheery garden room. The cuisine is... Found this place for lunch while walking by. Menu looked good and the prices were reasonable so we tried it. It was great! My friend and i both ordered from the brunch menu. My ropa vieja was very good and a nice portion. I loved the presentation in the cup made of plantains. They had an all you could drink... More

Noticed this place on our new morning walk route and finally got it together to make a reservation. We were seated in their charming little garden, with heaters to ensure our comfort. The drinks and food were very very good, well seasoned, beautifully presented, tasty tasty tasty. Paella and lechon were our choices. Both were excellent. The service was excellent.... More

...we discovered the Havana alma de Cuba after searching unsuccessfully for Puerto Rican food nearby in the Village. We decided to order four appetizers and split them as some of the food was unfamiliar. First up were the empanadas, which had pastry made to perfection enveloping the filling without overpowering. This, my friends, had my Puerto Rican friend in your... More

We had a good night here, it was a Saturday night so it was packed, but atmosphere was good. We had nice cocktails in the bar before moving onto dinner. Portions were tasty and meat was well cooked. It was particularly cheap, but we had a good night and enjoyed the food. Nice touch to be given some cigars with... More

So 4 of us went to Havana on the basis of the great reviews for the food and the customer service. They had to move us as the air conditioner was leaking onto one of us 4. No problem with that. They were quick and courteous. These things happen. The food was very good. When the bill came, we had... More

Staying in West Village

Neighborhood Profile
West Village
Stretching from Sixth Avenue to the Hudson River, the West Village is one of the city’s most coveted addresses. Full of trendy shops, historic taverns, and cozy restaurants set amid 19th century architecture, this neighborhood has a unique old-world feel. You won’t find a more picturesque location in Manhattan. Without the traditional city grid layout, it’s easy to get lost here, but that’s part of the fun as you stroll down elegant narrow streets with beautiful brownstones. When you need a break, you can always stop in at one of the many quaint eateries or cafes to soak in the atmosphere, or head to the western edge of the neighborhood to enjoy magnificent waterfront views while taking a leisurely walk in Hudson River Park.
