For those seeking an authentic and true value omakase experience this is a must try. Get to the bar early when the rice is first ready. Most of the 17 fish served by the chef are from Japan. The oyster bar is a nice starter. You'll be hard pressed to find better at twice the price.

My group of four came to Kanoyama for dinner on a Saturday with a 7 pm reservation, when our preferred sushi place in the area did not have any ressos available for that time. I really wish they had because Kanoyama was just underwhelming. It's crowded and noisy. It has a very hectic feel to it and the wait staff... More

There is one over-riding reason to go, the special omakase, served only at the omakase bar in the side room. Reservations are required for this, which is a dining experience. It is not cheap, expect to spend in the area of $200 per person with sake and tip, but is well worth it. If you don't want to pay the... More

I'm sure we e been here 75 times over the last 10 years. This is the best triple-threat (sushi/kitchen food/service) I know of. Great value, friendly, knowledgeable staff, and an utter lack of pretension--all are welcome. Kudos, Kanoyama! Keep it up! Guy Chirico

Went with friends and had a great evening. Amazzzzzzzing sushi. Not cheap but not over pricy. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. Highly recommended..

I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. This restaurant offers a variety of fresh fish. The focus is on the quality of the sashimi and not on the maki rolls. Most of the rolls are standard, with nothing particularly creative. We didn't really like the seaweed salad, but everything else was great. Overall good, but overpriced for what it offered.

i have been at Kanoyama many times. this time I did not enjoy ourselves. I felt that the food was thrown at us like in a diner rather than being served as a high end restaurant.

Seated immediately, but we ate early. We had great service- anyone walking by our table seemed aware and willing to help us - instead of having to wait for our designated server. This makes sense if you want to turn your tables over, but we didn't feel rushed. We had our usual sashimi order, which was excellent.

Yummy! Got the Sushi and Sashimi and was in heaven! Too bad I had to share with 3 others! My daughter is adventurous and got the uni with quail egg - she liked it! We shared oysters on the half shell and they were fresh and delicious. Service was attentive and polite. Excellent dinner, wonderful evening.

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
