Definitely order the seafood platter to start your meal, and follow the suggestion of the waiter for the type of meat you like. Expensive but worth every penny

I was dining alone so asked to sit at the bar. The hostess was very nice and suggested a hit top table. The waiter seemed interested in only upselling me on a bigger steak or more sides. My filet was ordered medium rare. It arrived chared on the outside, closer to rare. It should have been like butter, easy to... More

This restaurant was walking distance of The Barclay New York, which was critical with 8ins of snow! Old fashioned, in a good way, Smith & Wollensky is a classic New York eatery. A good range of steaks, wines and beers was complimented by very attentive service.

We went to S&W off the back of a recommendation. We were seated upstairs. It was extremely noisy and difficult to hold a conversation... As recommended, we had steaks, no starters. I had sirloin and my wife had a filet mignon. Sides of onion rings & Cajun potatoes. My steak was lovely and was cooked to perfection, my wife's was... More

We had an excellent meal, the steaks were superb ( although fairly expensive) however the waiters appeared to have no interest in our table and hardly spoke to us. In addition they started clearing away the plates even though our daughter hadn't finished eating - a big etiquette faux pas! Lastly, the obligatory tip was the price of another meal... More

The servers each time I have dined are less than enthusiastic about the role as server. The fact remains this is a good location with a solid steak menu however it is not inexpensive and should receive much better service. better . The rib eye as well as the creamed spinach are excellent and the seafood platter for two is... More

You can definitely not go wrong with a meal at Smith and Wollensky. This New York location is the original and it is definitely a unique place to eat. We were even in somewhat of a rush heading to a Knicks game, and the waiter was awesome and sped up out meal so we ate great, in good time and... More

A real nightmare! The historical wonderful restaurant is gone. I had already earlier a bad experience but thought that everybody could fail up and ten. But yesterday eve I had the prove that S&W is definitely a bad place were to eat. Meat was quality low and burned , not well done! Waiters were inefficient arrogant and impolite! They brought... This is how to run a great steak restaurant. We walked into the place and within 5 minutes coats were in the cloakroom, we had beers and menus in the bar. We had to hang in the bar for 40 minutes as they were running behind but it has such a great atmosphere we didn't mind. I don't need to... More

Description
One of America's most successful restaurants, this New York steakhouse opened in 1977 and has been a hit ever since.

It is one of the most trafficked restaurants in New York City and among the most celebrated steakhouses in the world. Specializing in fresh seafood and lobster and assorted steaks and chops, Smith & Wollensky is well recognized for its healthy portions, seasoned service staff and pop Americana ambience.

The painted wood exterior is dark forest green trim on sparkling white, with latticework trim. The elegant interior has turn-of-the-century appeal and design elements including shining brass, dark wood accents and polished wood floors.

Adjacent to Smith & Wollensky's is Wollensky's Grill. The Grill (entrance on 49th St) is open from 11:30AM till 2:00AM but does not accept reservations.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
