It's always difficult to find an authentic German place that isn't too "Americanized". Zum Schneider does a pretty good job of hitting the mark. Sure the Nürnberger were not up to my finely honed palate, but the weisswurst were totally legit, and the brezn were too. The beer is authentic and everyone who had it seemed to enjoy the Wiener... With actual German staff, Zum Schneider is an adorable and authentic restaurant with a lovely selection of German beer and food. The interior makes you feel like you are in Germany. It's clean, comfortable and enjoyable. I recommend it if you love A good time.

Been here with friends a few times. Food and beer is great. It's a dark, old, wooden place but it makes you feel you're in Germany.

Good actually wonederful food. But this particular evening, the place was not only a restaurant but also a meeting point for lots of noisy people drinking pints and two pinglasses of german beer. We literally couldn't hear ourselves speak.

Got stuck in New York during the recent snow storms in Jan - and this place was the only bar open(that we could physically get to in several feet(yes feet) of snow) - Great atmosphere, and just like being back in Garmisch - traditional food(V good) and beer(also v good) - Great staff and good VFM

I am German and I was really skptical about the taste of so called German Food in New York. But it really tasted the same. I can recommend the Schweinebraten!

Was here on a Sunday, heard about the good food and authentic German beer. The beer was very good and the food was very good. However, the service was horrible and the place was pretty trashy (looked like there was a huge party the night before and the clean up effort lackluster). The waitress did not check on us, and... The food here taste just like it does in Germany! The portion sizes are generous and well priced! It's a cozy interior with fast service when it's not crowded! I highly recommend the spaetzle! Outstanding!

The food is very good and the atmosphere, when it's not packed, is authentically German and cozy. The service, however, really spoils the experience. In typical German fashion, the staff is more interested in talking among themselves or being on their phones than taking care of their customers, and that's just not acceptable. We had to seek our service out... More

Staying in East Village

Neighborhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighborhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighborhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
