Whilst this bar is one of the oldest in New York City, it is very much a functioning public bar more than it is a tourist attraction. The food is ok (not many choices for vegetarians) and the service is friendly. Come in to check out the old world feel and stay because it is a good pub.

Great spot to embrace the history of the NYC bar/tavern. Food was good and service was friendly. Stop and enjoy a cold one, you won't regret it.

Calling or normal because it is not your typical "oh look how trendy I am" place to eat in NY. Great service, great food, good beers on tap. A very comfortable old school experience Love it and ope it stays here forever.

Cut the nonsense this is real historic NYC that you need to see if you're visiting my city. Support this place and check out the dumb waiter and the urinals in the gents. I recommend the double hot dogs. The beers always cold.

Came here in October during a vacation to New York. Wanted to primarily have a drink and relax, but ended up ordering food as well. I had the "Mayor's choice" burger. I was told by some locals that the burgers were the best in the city.....yeah, I don't think the best. Tasty and delicious, but not the best in the... More

I have not been to every bar in NYC (but i'm trying ) but I can't imagine one being better than this one. John the bartender has been there over 20 years and knows everybody. Frank and Malachey McCourt, Nick Hornby and Billy Collins are a few authors who have darkened this place's door. This is the New York City... More

Really cool little old style bar. Good drinks reasonable price. But the wings are the reason to come. Amazing wings. Probably the best Iv ever tasted.

This is a famous bar just north of Union Square. The man that owns it is a former advertising executive. It is very popular for the long wood bar in the main room and the beers on tap. Great for a beer and a chat or a light much/dinner. Became well known because tis sign was seen on the opening... More

This place is the real deal to experience an old NY Bar. Day shift bartender was excellent if explaining the ins and outs of the beer menu. Pricing very reasonable. I highly recommend for a NY landmark that is alive and kicking,. Did not try any food.

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighborhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of the city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets - much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighborhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being home to a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
