I have not been to every bar in NYC (but i'm trying ) but I can't imagine one being better than this one. John the bartender has been there over 20 years and knows everybody. Frank and Malachey McCourt, Nick Hornby and Billy Collins are a few authors who have darkened this place's door. This is the New York City... More

This is a famous bar just north of Union Square. The man that owns it is a former advertising executive. It is very popular for the long wood bar in the main room and the beers on tap. Great for a beer and a chat or a light much/dinner. Became well known because tis sign was seen on the opening... More

This place is the real deal to experience an old NY Bar. Day shift bartender was excellent if explaining the ins and outs of the beer menu. Pricing very reasonable. I highly recommend for a NY landmark that is alive and kicking,. Did not try any food.

Excellent place to stop & have a cold beer. The beer is cold!! Nice friendly service. Menu looks like a good variety of "bar food" at very reasonable prices.

Visited for lunchtime drinks and snacks, apparently this place is a historic spot and been in movies?? Its what you expect from a New York bar, singles propping up the bar and couples and families sitting in the booths, nothing special, don't expect a vibe or anything out of the ordinary, just expect to feel , ordinary

Stopped in the Old Town Bar for a few pints and lunch last week. Very enjoyable. Yes it is indeed an "old" bar but has great atmosphere and a full bar and a decent menu-We will return next time we are in NYC

We popped in here for a liquid refreshment after a day of plodding around NYC attractions. The place had an old feel to it with decor that was probably from when it opened! All character. Much memorabilia on the walls. The big long bar was inviting if only a little crowded. We ordered a couple of cold ones which were... More

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighborhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of the city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets - much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighborhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being home to a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
