Safe, reliable neighbourhood resto w a local following. Coffee/Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch are all OK, however it's days as a dinner destination are long-past. It's could use a bit of polish as it is looking a bit tired. Food is reliable but nothing special - it's a safe place to visit for casual and easy. Wait-staff are OK; door-staff are not very warm... So here's the real deal, folks. I was born and raised in New York City. I frequented the French Roast on 11th Street over 20 years ago with my friends. We even had a quasi book club in the early 00s where we pretended to discuss things intelligently but really it was an excuse to get together, eat and drink... More

The French Roast restaurant is consistently good. Locals and visitors make up the crowd in this busy place. The staff are knowledgeable and attentive without hovering over you. Worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood!

Walked in as looked great with some nice french food on offer. Stuck in a back part of seating area and ignored for 20 minutes, even though space in main restaurant. Left and explained why, to complete apathy by staff almost surly response. Worst service in three visits to NYC and this is first negative review in NYC. Be warned... More

Food here is reliable, getting pricier, like everything in the Village. Noise inside can be extreme; seasonal outdoor dining is along 6th Avenue, which can also be noisy and noxious.

food is excellent. Hamburgers on brioche are tasty and just the right size. The music is cool and atmosphere very cozy. We went twice coz it was worth it.

Well the name is French ... It's got some French like food on it's menu but I won't call it a real French restaurant ... Having said it's a really nice and cosy restaurant. It was Halloween when I dined there and all the waiters were all dressed up in their costume ... It was really fun to see all... More

I've been going to French Roast every year for years, starting way back when it's Israeli owner would often be there over seeing the place. He's not there anymore. This last visit was terrible. French on the menu but definitely nothing done French. I ordered a frisse salad with poached eggs and lardon, a typical French salad. The salad was... More

I've been here twice now and had the same experience both times: lovely atmosphere, mediocre staff, and mediocre food. While I haven't been during late hours, the fact that it's 24/7 is pretty cool. The layout is lovely and sitting outside was great, I've lived in Paris for 2 years and the atmosphere was the only accurate part about it.... More

Staying in Greenwich Village

Neighborhood Profile
Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.
