This bakery is a not-so-hidden gem with a fast moving queue out of the door and we can see why! An abundance of handmade baked goods, both sweet and savoury with knowledgable and passionate staff. They catered excellently to an allergy and we felt confident...in their recommendations and awareness. They packaged our purchases beautifully for travel and they remained fresh well into the following day. There is a reason this is a neighbourhood favourite with Columbia students and locals alike.More

Friendly staff and really good dobos cake and rétes. We have just visiting NYC for a week and just popped in today. It was fairly busy but lucky to get a table and had a cake and a coffee. Both nice

On Saturday, June 4th, my daughter (who lives in NY) and I walked the Riverside Park on the Hudson from 2nd Street to the Hungarian Pastry Shop which was quite a jaunt! The effort we made was well worth it as the poppyseed pastry that...I had was absolutely delicious. It certainly brought back fond memories of growing up when my mother used to make poppyseed rolls and cakes. A definite must to visit when in New York!More

Our daughter, who moved near this place recently, says that whenever she tells long time New Yorkers where she lives, they always mention the Hungarian Pastry Shop. So she had us stop in on our visit. The variety of choices was amazing and the poppy...seed strudel and macaroons we chose didn’t disappoint. Fresh and extravagantly tasty.More

We were a bit surprised to see the line, but then we saw that this place is special and they have good Eastern European pastries, sort of unique.

We were standing in line for about 10 minutes and when we went out the line was even longer. Great cakes and atmosphere. Prices are ridiculous.

Delicious cookies and pastries. The dough for our raisin/cinnamon roll was excellent, super flaky and buttery. Linzer torts were also very good - raspberry was better than apricot! Stopped in around Noon on a Friday and it was filling up fast. We know understand why...it’s popular, and we’ll be back.More

Amazing pastry shop with a wide variety of pastries, cookies and great coffees and items to eat in or take out. Allow a bit of time for your visit, as there is often a line and you may want to order coffee as well to...eat outside with your pastries. Excellent, cheerful and helpful service as well.More

I grew up in a mill town filled with grandmothers who baked delicious Hungarian cookies. When we walked past this shop we were excited to come back for coffee and dessert. There was a large outdoor seating area and several tables inside. We decided to...sit outside. We selected a poppy seed large cookie and a slice of cake. We also ordered Viennese coffee. The server asked if we wanted sugar in the coffee and we said no. The description of the coffee was espresso with chocolate and frapped milk. We got coffee and whipped cream….no hint of chocolate. The cookie and cake were both stale. The poppy seed cookie was nothing like the cookies I remember. This stale cookie tasted like store bought sugar cookie dough with spoon of poppyseed filling tossed in the middle.More

We had a good break in this bakery where many people are working and studying. We had a wonderful interaction with a film director who was sitting next to us.

Have been here several times. Although the staff work hard and maintain (clean regularly) the tables well, the place never feels harried. This is a very popular place.

Visited on multiple occassions with my boyfriend. First time we had coffee and American Cheesecake on a rainy February night. The second time we had Orange Chocolate Cake with Coffee on a warm July evening. And Third time we bought dessert for my birthday, again...in July. The place never disappoints! Always excellent confectionary to compliment a romantic evening. Cannot wait to go back!!!More

I love the HPS. Yes it’s crowded, but there’s no place like it. The plain croissants are my favorite.

We went to check out this spot, popular among any and all writers, for some sweets. It was crowded, but we managed to find a small table. All the pastries looked interesting and tasty, but you can’t really tell which one is what, as they...don’t have any signage. It is also not easy to take a look at all of them, as people line up in front of the show windows to order and pay. The first item we tried was a slice of Lemon Cake. It had coconut crust on the bottom. Nice flavor combination of tart lemon and sweet coconut. Then we tried chocolate cookie sandwich? I believe it is Ishler. It was described as “two hazelnut cookies with bittersweet chocolate cream.” It tasted more like ginger cookies… It had loads of chocolate in the middle that was tough and hard, I wouldn’t call it a “cream” by any means… A bit messy to eat, since you have to bite into it, as the filling is too hard and thick to cut with knife. It was still way too much sugar and too sweet. The last item we tried was Éclair. This was the only item that I could say “light” or maybe it tasted light in comparison to the other items??? It had chocolate cream and Bavarian or custard cream? There were many customers with their laptop, and you could tell they have been there for a long time… And they seems to NOT care about others looking for a seat. I saw a couple using 3 tables (6 chairs), with their personal items spread all over so that no one can share the table. The pastries were nice, but all too sweet for my taste buds… It will be perfect for super sweet teeth people, I am sure.More

I love buying pastries at this place. They have a wide variety of options, offering everything from hamentaschen to croissants to cookies to baklava and everything in between! This place is usually busy and has a line, and the tables are frequently taken (it's a...popular place for writers and for people to socialize), so have patience if you want to sit down and eat here. Otherwise, I suggest buying your pastry and going across the street to the small park right by the cathedral. This place is cash-only. However, the service is quick, as there are several people behind the counter who handle several customers at once. They also serve coffee.More

When I was there I did not see any signs saying that certain pastries were gluten free...that's not to say they don't have it. I'd go and just ask them. Have fun !!
