I was told that this was one of the most popular restaurants in NYC, which led to high expectations on my end. They served our group scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon, and waffles. I was not very impressed with any of it, but perhaps the lunch or dinner food is better.

My girlfriend and I had been hanging out to try some soul food in New York and heard about Sylvia's. Couldn't have made a better choice! Only a quick train ride uptown from Times Square to 125th/Lenox avenue. Excellent food, great atmosphere and the friendly staff made it an awesome experience. We had the meatloaf and beef ribs and both... More

We were stuffed when we left the restaurant. Great food! Only complaint is when you went to the restaurant, it was a little confusing not knowing where to check-in at. We waited by the street podium and when no one tended to us or acknowledged us, we walked in and did not see the podium to check-in and no one... More

On a recent trip to NYC, our family in Harlem suggested we should have a family meal at Sylvia's! I am so glad we did. I ordered fried chicken, it was delectable. My husband had the ribs, the sauce was like no other sauce. A little sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Service was good, atmosphere felt homey. Overall, we had... More

Service is good. The,three course dinner was sparse . the 4 shrimp were among the appitizers, and they were large but flavorless. The lobster was good, but there were no side dishes eg: vegetable or corn or potato. Dessert was pie with ice cream or another fruit. That was OK. The cost was very high in my opinion

Elinor, I'm glad you had a great meal, but it sounds like you're leaving this for a different restaurant. That said, we'd love to have you here sometime -- and don't worry, we've got big portions, so you'll never leave hungry! - Sylvia's More

I strongly suggest the smothered pork chops or the Turkey wings (served on Thursdays) I am not a fan of the mac and Cheese but the corn bread is great if you ask for Butter and not the spread imitation margarine.

This is a place worth the trip if you like soul food! I had the fried chicken, greens and mac & cheese. It was all good, but in the future I'd just order a whole plate of the mac & cheese. It was cheesy but smooth, firm but silky, and bar-none the best I've ever eaten. Definitely try it if... More

We've ordered her stuff online and loved it, so when in Newark, had to make the effort to go eat it for real.. it was a very expensive drive (the tolls for the bridges are CRAY CRAY) but the chicken was really worth it :) Just delicious. It doesn't look that big but lots of seating inside in different rooms... More

This was my wife and I first visit to New York City, not to mention Harlem. I had always heard of the famed "Sylvia's Restaurant", had even seen her products on the grocery shelves of my city in Texas. Being from Texas and being born and raised in Louisiana, I kind of know a little about Soul Food. I went... More
