The food was good, But I wouldn't rate it Excellent. I have had better chicken and waffles in the south. But it was good.. The service was just okay. very slow we sat there for about 10 minutes before they even came over with water and to see what we wanted to drink. So service could improve. I don't think... More

We know that the South is hard to compete with when it comes to soul food, but we do our best to add a New York spin on the classic cooking. Sorry if there was some delay with your service, but it's good to hear that you enjoyed all your food. If the chicken and waffles didn't quite blow you... More

If you are from the South like myself, you might be a little let down. It was good, but it wasn't all the hype. It was a nice experience, it gave us a chance to go to Harlem, and the chicken was good, but i wasn't blown away. They had good strong drinks so i can say that the drinks... More

Audra, we always love cooking for people from the south, but we apologize if you felt it was a let down. It sounds like things were still pretty tasty, even if you weren't quite blown away, and we'd love another chance sometime to truly knock your socks off. Hope to see you again soon! After riding in Central Park,we had breakfast at Sylvia's. The staff was friendly and efficient. The food was fresh, well prepared and delicious. I had fish and grits. The fish was prepared to perfection. The food was plentiful. I had enough for another meal.

We visited as a family for Gospel dinner. As an experience it was ok, but underwhelming. The singer was good and circulated the tables but the experience was undermined by a thumping dubbed bass soundtrack which drowned her singing and all the conversation. Eventually we asked to move to an outside table to avoid the disco bass which was giving... More

Sorry for the volume at your first table -- hopefully things were better after the move. We're glad that you enjoyed the time here, though we apologize if you felt the food was just okay. Next time, be sure to let your server know if things are dry so we can switch it out with a fresh plate for you.... More

Stopped here for lunch as we wanted to try it. The food was lovely and the service pretty good. We shared a chicken combo with 2 sides included and it was plenty. Wished Sylvia was still alive as I think it would've been 5 stars from what we've read. Still worth a visit for good soul food.

No trip to NYC is complete without a stop at Sylvia's for the best soul food you will ever have. Sylvia opened this place up in 1962 when she moved to Harlem from Louisiana. Since then it has become an icon of Harlem. If you are lucky you will go on a night with live music. Easy to get to.... More

Sylvia's is located in Harlem very near the 125 street subway stop and a short walk from the historic Apollo Theater. Our visit took place on a Wednesday evening. We were greeted by friendly hostesses and seated promptly. If you're from the south and visiting NYC, the menu will be very familiar to you. Based on reviews, i ordered the... More

We had a pre-Apollo Theatre dinner here.A large restaurant and Harlem institution, there was live music on Friday night, fortunately playing in the other room. Interesting menu and lots of food. Some of the Southern specials and greens were not great, but the fried chicken and standards are quite good. Our service was very bad and we continually had to... More

I went to Sylvia's years ago and had the memory of a great soul food place. Things have changed considerably, The fried chicken is still good, but not more than dozens of other places in Manhattan. The garlic mashed potatoes only had garlic on the name, and you could make bricks with the Mac and cheese. The atmosphere is gone... More

I'm glad you had great memories of your visit years ago, though we're sorry your recent meal didn't live up to it. We were kind of super happy customers as the food was really tasty (kids chicken fingers maybe a bit too spicey), service was great too. But when it came to settling the balance, a 15% service fee came on top of everything and the tip too. So you can add ~35% to any price you see on the menu. The... More

We're glad that you loved the food! As for the service fee, that is included gratuity, which is attached to bills of larger parties for convenience. We apologize if there was any confusion there, and we would have happily clarified that for you if you'd asked. We hope to see you again soon for another great meal. - Sylvia's More
