The food is fabulous, the wait staff is great, more than ample wine cellars. Try for lunch there-more reasonably priced. Get there early-before noon because, boy, it fills up-they pack them in.

We had a pre-theater meal here on a Saturday evening. The selection of fish is remarkable. We started with the Saganaki which was very good. I had the Youvetsi and it was delicious - shriimps and scallops (I requested no mussels or clams) in a tomato sauce with orzo and feta. The other members of my party tried the Kavouri... More

We all shared appetizers which were prepared in a Greek style and all were good except the calamari which were over cooked and rubbery. I also had a salmon fish sandwich with a delicious sauce but by the time I got it the toasted bread was soggy. I truly expected more from a restaurant with such a fine reputation. In... More

Avra has been open forever and I have eaten there for many years. It is still some of the best Greek food in the city. The place is always packed so the tables are tight and there is quite a din. The food is fresh and delicious. We always order one o the fresh fish options. The zucchini chips are... More

We have been going to Avra for years but I think this is our last time. So many things are wrong even though it's busier than ever. 1. While we had a reservation, we still had to wait for our table. 2. It took at least 1/2 hour before our waiter came over to our table. 3. We ordered one... More

Excellent service, food and atmosphere. One of the best seafood experiences in dining. Highly recommended, save room for walnut cake.

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel concierge during a recent visit to New York City. The menu is largely seafood, but with a few Greek standards such as chicken and lamb in the meat category. I started with a dozen oysters which were sweet and were served with two kinds of dipping sauce, both of which were delicious. My... More

No booking so we arrived at this restaurant just around the corner from our hotel. We shared a whole snapper expertly deboned by our waiter, with great fries and salad. Also had a superb bottle of Cotes du Rhone. A great casual meal that hit the spot.

Great Greek seafood (although there are a handful or other dishes) in convenient locale. Wonderful appetizers included shrimp w/ garlic and octopus, chose grilled "fish of the day" and grilled lobster as entrees both super simply prepared and really wonderful. We didn't try any of the non-seafood items, but saw some nice looking lamb go by. Don't expect fancy sauces,... More

We stopped in NYC on our way home from Phili for lunch at Avra Estiatorio. It was the icing on the cake for this trip up and down the east coast. There were four of us and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining and discussions. I had the tuna plate, my friends had the lobster ravioli and cheeseburger with fries. Everyone... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
