Esca is not only one of the best restaurants in New York's Theater District. It's one of New York City's best restaurants. Everything is top notch at this seafood lover's paradise. Like all of Mario Batali's restaurants, all bases are covered. The atmosphere, food, wine and service are exquisite. Esca's dinner prices are one quarter the price of an evening... More

Not a traditional Italian and if you don't want exotic fish you are out of luck. I had gnocchi and it was way too salty. Salad nice but not special. So I found restaurant pretentious and very overpriced.

This place is classy and elegant. Service is superb and the dining experience was wonderful. White bean crostini for starters was delicious. Stuffed zucchini blossoms with goat cheese was a favorite as was the spaghetti with lobster in a mint sauce. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Our server Patricia was top notch. Can't wait to go back. Thank you... More

I have been wanting to eat at Esca for years and was so excited to finally get the chance only to be let down by the really mediocre food. Crudo tasting was barely edible - too cold, too much crunchy salt - as were the Vongole clams - covered in grit. The Bianchetti were OK but nothing to write home... More

Decent set up, Italian "trattoria" style, friendly welcome. Barely acceptable appetizers called "crudo", the rest is just null!! Cook has no clue what an italian "fritto misto" is or how to prepare "fiori di zucca". What a shame!! Service is, behind any imagination, pathetic and fully "disorganized". Overall, an useless "italian" restaurant. Delete it from your "wish" list.

It's too seafood heavy. The seafood they served wasn't really Italian themed. I went with recommended dish of seared tuna. It was indeed seared tuna with no sauce, marinade anything. So rather boring. My daughters pasta dish was better and the only vegetarian entree on the menu. Tables are ridiculously close so after a rather loud couple was seated next... More

This is our second visit to Esca, but it has been many years. Our first experience was phenomenal and this one did not disappoint either. We skipped having a crisp due to timing but did have two appetizers: stuffed zucchini blossoms and burrata w/caviar. Both were delicious. The cheese was a huge surprise in flavor. Just a wonderful combination that... More

The minute we walked into restaurant it went down hill. We were very excited to eat at Esca which was recommended by our hotel. We walked into restaurant and very rudely asked if we had reservations which we did! We were seated and all noticed how rudely we were treated and just brushed it off. Our waiter Peter came over... If it were only for the food and the service, I would give this restaurant 5 stars. Their fish and their pasta were all excellent. And the service personnel were friendly, helpful, and professional. The restaurant is very convenient to the theater district and they offer both pre-theater and post-theater dining. However, their prices are extremely high and way out... More

Great atmosphere, great service and good food. I dined here two years ago and I remember the food being better. Not that it was bad this time but it wasn't as memorable.

Staying in Midtown

Neighborhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit - spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's paradise where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
