Take it from a Philistine, Candle 79 serves very good food, period. You don't even have to add "for vegan food." My "burger" was excellent and my friend enjoyed her "nuevos rancheros," as I anticipated she would, The shock was that our husbands also loved their selections: waffles with fruit and pancakes with almond cream. The tiny muffins were incredible... More

Being a vegetarian in the US isn't always easy. Being a vegan is even harder. Sure you can normally find something to eat in the dark recesses of most restaurants' menus but the choices are normally very limited and totally uninspiring. It's therefore a real pleasure to find somewhere like Candle 79 that's 100% vegan. Everything on the menu -... More

I dined here during lent to avoid eating meat. The food and wine were both delicious. I was very pleased with appetizers and entrees. HOWEVER, the following morning, my body was so bloated, that I could barely wear my wedding band. It took me 1/2 day to get back to normal, drinking a lot of water and eating very little.... More

I didn't think it was possible to have a cannoli that could taste so fantastic without using milk or cream! I'm getting ahead of myself but the desserts were incredible and even the soy milk in my coffee tasted great and I'm a guy who loves his half and half! We chose this restaurant because our friends were vegan and... More

The best vegan restaurant, with excellent kosher wines, and a wonderful experience for any adventurous foodie, even if not vegetarian (as myself). The food is even better than the menu suggests. Fairly priced for the quality (c. $100 a person including drinks and a bottle of wine). I went to Bouley's five star restaurant the next night and spent much... More

Too deliciuos... More

Was in NYC for business meetings. Being a strict vegetarian (hence prefer vegan over regular places serviing vegetarian food), prefer to eat at vegan places. Had dinner at Candle 79 - first, the ambience itself is good....i would say a bit upscale. had booked a table (highly recommended, since they stay busy) hostess seated us. Good selection of menu. We... More

Excellent classic takes on vegan from the very original. This place has been on my list for a long time and we finally scored reservations on a recent trip. Their Taramind BBQ skewers were stunning, although I shouldn't single them out since everything was excellent. Felt the drinks were a tad overpriced (cocktails) (IMO) but wine was stellar. Reservations are... More

My wife and I stopped in for lunch, I looked at the menu and asked why there was no meat in the burgers lol, the bean burger was excellent and very filling, I also liked the iced tea. My wife had the watermelon salad and thought it was excellent. Would definitely come back.

This is a great little place with fantastic vegan food, even for a carnivore like myself. My daughter and sister are vegetarians, so a great place for them. They were helpful on the phone when we changed reservation times and were seated quickly. Every course for each of us was fantastic. Definitely a place I would recommend.

Thank sisterpv

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighborhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighborhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
