Balthazar is a fancy French bistro in the middle of Manhattan. The restaurant seems very authentic, with wine bottles on shelves behind the bar and waiters dressed as French waiters. Unfortunately, the food lacks the fines that authentic French food has. In addition, Balthazar seems to have a slight problem with the service.

Great traditional French restaurant. French onion soup was amazing. Tomato salad is overpriced. Steak frites (which almost everybody has) was fabulous. Match this with the $68 Bordeaux (Griffoni? You will have to do some detective work with the menu) which is a perfect match. A later sitting is really good. We booked at 10pm which was just fine.

I have been there several times . I arrived alone and without reservation, and despite the place was packed I got a seat on the bar within 10 min that was actually perfect for me. In this occasion I ordered the chicken liver and foie gras mousse followed by steak tartar and finished with an apple Tarte Tatin . Everything... More

I was there a few years ago and this time decided to pay a new visit with my wife and another couple. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The wine list is fine and we enjoyed a perfect night. I certainly recommend as one of my preferred places to go in Soho and will return on my next trip... More

This restaurant is without a doubt an institution and very busy. This could probably explain why the service is average minus, and the food is nothing to get excited about. Until our table was ready, we ordered a drink at the bar from a bartender that had such an attitude and had such a long face. over and above the... More

It's not easy to find a good restaurant in a convenient location that offers breakfast during the week. Balthazar certainly fulfills that need. This is a busy restaurant in a historic building, with many lovely architectural features. Our group of three enjoyed the buckwheat crepes filled with eggs, ham and gruyere; brioche french toast, and the omelette with herbs. A... More

We were really impressed by everything at Balthazar. The service and food was impeccable. The wine list is extensive and the wait staff are knowledgeable. If you are having trouble choosing what wine you would like to drink they will walk you through the menu. The food was delicious. I had the onion soup and the agnolotti both were delicious.... More

I've eaten here twice now, amazing food and great service. It's a little pricey ($45 a head) but worth every penny. Second visit we had a waiter who had bad manners, after a word with our host we received an apology and it was resolved. Will definitely return.

Delicious ambiance, scrumptious menu with stunning seafood choices! Oysters and crab particularly glorious. The decor and seating is fabulously comfortable and the feeling is luxurious and exciting - a must when visiting NYC.
