About
A hidden little gem in the heart of greenwich village. This noveau French American bistro was established in 1997 by owner/chef Abigail Hitchcock. This cozy, intimate, yet casual restaurant offers a local, seasonal menu at affordable prices. Enjoy dinner on our sofa while taking in the views of the historic townhouses of the Village and the people who live in the neighborhood. Chef Abby's creations include appetizers like hot crab dip, socca (a chick pea pizza) served with a red pepper coulis and entrees like hanger steak, house smoked duck sandwich, and our wildly popular Banoffee Pie. We also offer hands on cooking classes and corporate events!

It was a really great experience loved it would definitely go back. The food and wine was amazing, and they were very accommodating.

Located in Greenwich Village on McDougal St. it’s a great place for a drink and as many small plates (seafood, chicken, etc.) as you can consume. And, they have the best hands on cooking classes in the city. Or, if you are a foodie who wants to test your palate or just an adventurer looking for new experiences try there Dining in the Dark dinners. Everything there is first rate......

We had the most wonderful dinner in this cozy bistro in the West Village. Matthew the bartender/jack of all trades helped us start the evening with a smile and wonderful cocktails. Abigail Hitchcock the Chef/Owner couldn’t have been more hospitable. We definitely will do a cooking class at one of our future visits. They also have blindfolded dinners! The menu was as interesting as it was delicious! Prices are reasonable by NYC standards and you will not be disappointed. It was so much fun!

We came to NYC as a group of 4 friends and decided to Dine in the Dark with Camaje. The evening could not have been more perfect. Wonderful Nicole came out to greet us and help us with blindfolds, Chef Abigail (Owner) came out to confirm dietary restrictions, and we were led in...without sight. Once seated, Chef explained what would happen and began the experience. I won’t spoil the surprises, but wine flowed freely, tastes were sublime, and we felt we were in another world. Santana (with the warm hands), Nicole, and Chef Abigail were incredible hosts from start to finish - we’ve already begun spreading the word - though that is not needed after 14 years of sightless dining, and will return as soon as we can, if only to spend another incredible evening in this space.

They are known for their Dinners in the Dark but we didn't come here for that. We used a Groupon, which helped because it would have been an expensive meal. The escargots and grilled shrimps with arugula and artichokes were delicious. We ordered steak frites and sea bass also very good. My Abigail burger was just ok. I think the blue cheese was overpowering and made it very salty so I didn't finish it. The fries were a tad greasy. The flourless chocolate cake made up for that. Service was friendly and warm.

My partner and I ate here using a Groupon - it had actually expired - but they said they'd honor it anyway. So we were off to a great start before we'd even arrived. Very cozy, unpretentious and welcoming. Service was warm and friendly and attentive - our waiter was really informed about the menu and recommended items that were especially good. The crepe was fantastic, the Steak Frites also top notch. Bistro standards done perfectly.

We came here for dinner in the dark and it was such a fantastic experience! It's not really about trying exotic things, more about the sensory experience of dining - noticing all the things you don't notice when you have your eyes available to you. The food was great, staff was great and the event went off without a hitch that we were able to detect! Thanks chef Abby!

The Camaje “Dinner in the Dark” is a wonderful experience! I was a little (ok a lot) nervous the food would be exotic items, but it is not. It is simply extraordinary, fresh items you would order off of any menu. We took our 11 year old daughter and she enjoyed the experience as well, and because she was blind-folded along with the rest of us, she had to snapchat AFTER dinner! 😜 This is an amazing experience!

Excellent restaurant. The French Lentil salad (mixed greens, beets, herbed goat cheese), the bouillabaisse and the dense, rich flourless chocolate cake are all delicious. The service is attentive.

The idea of eating dinner in the dark would seem to scare some people, but trust me when I tell you, this entire experience was wonderful and such a great time was had by all in my party. The lack of outside interruptions brought back that old school dinner appeal of having a conversation and being involved in said conversation and the brought the food back to the centerfold of the dinner. There was 3 courses and the staff that put this together made everything exciting (even just eating a piece of bread)... I don't want to give away the details so I'll just say that this is definitely something to experience for a date night or even a first date. The food was great and each course was paired with a different wine and water to cleanse your palate.... highly recommend.

I can't speak highly enough of the team at Camaje, they provided a truly unforgettable evening. The food was great, all of the team were friendly and it was an amazing atmosphere. The gluten free options were fab, inventive and very close to what everyone else had, so very impressed. I recommend this experience to everyone and we will definitely return if we visit New York again.

We came for"Dinner in the Dark" and loved the entire experience. You are blindfolded during the entire meal and experience. It really heightens your other senses and you connection with the people you are with becomes more more intimate and enjoyable. No technology! The owner is a true chef, the food is local and what's fresh that day. Loved the entire experience. Highly recommend.

We started dining there, long ago because I enjoy the authentic French cuisine. The friendly service, warm and intimate atmosphere keep me going back. We have tried everything in the menu, different menus, it is always delicious. The fish, the soup, the mussels; you can’t go wrong, it is that reliable.

I took my boyfriend, his daughter, my daughter and her husband and myself to Camaje in NYC on Macdougal Street for the "Dinner in the Dark" experience on Wednesday night January 17th 2018. We had such a great time!! The staff including the owner were amazing! we were celebrating our anniversary and my daughter's birthday. The experience was so cool. It is true when you can't see the other sense really do get heightened. I don't want to share too much about the dinner but the food was wonderful. They catered to each of our dietary restrictions( and we had a lot of those). The drinks were perfect. We talked, laughed, ate and drank with smiles on our faces! Of course I can only guess that because we couldn't see :-). Superb experience I would highly recommend to otters!!

Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighborhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighborhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.
