The restaurant was recommended by a friend who knows Russian food first hand. That's why I went there with high expectation. The service was excellent; our server Julia was utterly charming and knowledgable of the menu. The ambiance was delightfully, old fashion Russian charming. Unfortunately the food was somewhat disappointing. There were 4 of us. We enjoyed blinis with smoked salmon and... More

I'm Russian, took my Korean friend there. She said food was good, but she never had Russian food before. I had "herring under fur" salad, where herring was excruciatingly salty. Potato dumplings tasted weird, were seasoned with fried onion that was charred basically, tasted bitter. My friend had borsch, I tried "salo" that went with it-it was gooey and disgusting,... More

Mari Vanna is uniquely decorated and furnished and has an ambience different from other restaurants. Their female waiting staff don similar girly summer dresses and yet not exactly a uniform. My host and I were comfortable chatting after dinner on their bench in front surrounded by plants. The food that my host ordered were well chosen and complimentary to one... More

A truly authentic experience. The food is so delicious. This is the best Russian food I've had. The atmosphere feels just like the Soviet Union, which is what it's supposed to be; the "old" days. So great, highly recommended.

The food is great but for Russian cuisine is a bit pricey. The service is great and you can hang out and drink by the bar if you don't feel like having dinner. The scene could be great depending on the day.

Had a great dining experience at Mari Vanna last Saturday. Cute decor, great atmosphere, delicious food (we sampled quite a lot of items on the menu, all were delicious) and above all, fantastic service by our waiter Jama (sorry if I misspelled your name). Jama was friendly, professional, made great suggestions on the menu and made us feel very welcome.... More

Overall, we enjoyed the fun and pleasant ambience. Loud but nice lull of voices. Mixture of Russian and English speakers. Came here to celebrate a birthday and they do this crazy ensemble where they sing and clap, very cute. The food was okay, but the service, which was impeccable, and the great atmosphere made up for it! Food: the food... More

Totally worth a visit whether you are a Russian missing home food or a foreigner with a passion for trying out new cuisines. Friendly stuff and nice music from the 1950s-1960s.

This is a small international chain with restaurants in major capitals. It is richly decorated with vintage objects, furniture, pictures, and chandeliers. All food was outstanding: Russian traditional mayo salad, beet vinaigrette, pel'meni, small pirogi, chicken Kiev, beef Stroganoff, deserts. About 15 different infused vodkas, difficult to chose from. We were there from 8 to 11 on a weekday, and... More

Food is good and decor quaint and different. My son was taken there by friends from Belarus who attest to the genuine Russian food. Four of us went for dinner and had a very pleasant evening sampling different dishes, all enjoyable. Made a change from the average Italian/Mexican/Thai etc

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighborhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of the city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets - much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighborhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being home to a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
