We visited this restaurant because we saw in some reviews from the past that in the evenings they played live jazz and could be entered with minors, and I read in the reviews that the food was rich. We went on a Friday between 6:30pm and 8pm, we had no reservation but we found table I think because we went early, but when we left it was all busy. At least in the time I was and being Friday there was no live jazz, but the food experience was very rich. We ate lasagna and it was delicious, the one that stood out over the others was one that had peperoni and shrimp, yumi, yumi. We had a winery that was very delicious and priced correctly. Overall the food of the 3 we were, including two cocktails, a glass of wine and the 3 ate dessert the bill was 130US which is a very correct value for the quality of food and service. We were attended by a waiter named Marck who took care that we felt with very good service. If I went back to New York, I'd like to eat the peperoni lasagne with shrimp again.

I've been here many times since 1985, 8 years after La Lanterna di Vittorio opened up. Initially it was a cafe, with delicious coffees and desserts. In later years, it became an Italian restaurant and now, their specialties include various pizzas and lasagnas. My husband and I came here last night for dinner, with a reservation prior to a performance at the Blue Note Jazz Club, less than 2 blocks away, We opted for dinner here, for more selections + better food and it was a good choice. Our waitress Gaby, was very friendly and went over their specialities of lasagnas and pizzas, We decided to share the arugula salad which was delicately dressed with lemon juice and shaved parmigiana reggiano cheese and the gorgonzola and walnut personal pizza - 12" of pure yum, enough for the two of us. We topped off our dinner by sharing the bread pudding. La Lanterna has an amazing menu of home made desserts. Love coming here anytime - for dessert, for lunch, for dinner. A staple in the village. Highly recommend!

Excellent for a casual night out if you love hearty, homemade Italian food. Great for pizzas, calzones, and lasagnas, in fact the restaurant seems to make a specialty of lasagnas and we enjoyed every one in the flights. Service is a true gem, all servers were pleasant and prompt, and even though the restaurant was packed we did not feel rushed or pushed. Would definitely visit again if we are in the area!

The food is delicious and atmosphere cosy, but the timings need some work. Our starters had only been on the table for 5 minutes before we had to scrape the remainder onto a side plate as the mains were ready. The bottle of wine we’d ordered then didn’t come out until we were 3/4 of the way through the main. All in all a fairly rushed disorganized experience.

My friend, who lives in Greenwich Village, introduced me to this cozy taverna tucked away on McDougall St. We were ushered to a quiet table on a terrace in the backyard by Agnes, our waiter. Friendly and charming, she introduced us to the featured dish here: Lasagna. There are perhaps a dozen varieties on offer and we settled on sharing from a tasting menu featuring this quintessential Italian dish. The food was a revelation, we drank Sangiovese to wash it down, and cannoli and cappuccino for dessert. The service and ambiance were magical. My companion and I had a luncheon that we are not likely to forget. Thank you Agnes for taking such good care of us.

Lasagna and pizza is their speciality - particularly lasagna. We had their Flights of Lasagna, essentially a sampler of four different types. Food was very good, excellent service. It's an old dark place with lots of small dinning rooms and bars -- love the atmosphere. $200 for four people with wine. It was fun spot for friends to meet up for dinner. I will go back.

I reserved a table in “the garden.” It’s actually a kind of backyard greenhouse without the green. It was extremely noisy like an echo chamber and only half full. It must be deafening when filled to capacity. My wife and I couldn’t communicate due to the noise. We changed to a lovely window seat up front. We had a tasty green salad with smoked duck. It was excellent. My main dish was the sausage and broccoli rabe lasagna. I chose this because it’s cooked with homemade pasta. This dish was submerged in gobs of melted cheese, so much so that I could hardly taste the sausage, pasta and broccoli rabe. Not good. I left half of it. My wife had a panino with salami and Gorgonzola on ciabatta roll. She liked it. Overall this was a mediocre experience and, with all the restaurant choices in this area, I would not return.

We came hungry and tired, we went to see the Recommendation in the Guide to Restaurants near Washington Square. The small and very cozy place, with an indoor dining room, a very well placed backyard and even some very romantic tables for 2 on the sidewalk (those ideal for the night). The very varied menu, lasagna, pizzas and salads we ordered were delicious. Very good service, very attentive and helpful. Magdalene was very attentive to our table and our order. All wonderful. We will definitely repeat!

Located in Greenwich village-this simple Italian was wonderful and cosy. Very atmospheric and bustling with several small dark candle lit rooms. We had a variety of dishes including lasagne, pizza and beet/rocket goats cheese salad - all tasty. The rose wine was delicious and chilled. A perfect start to our holiday.

I have been coming here since 1993 when I lived in the neighborhood. I try to update my reviews every few years. The elderly Italian couple who ran it then have Ling since retired--and it shows in the decline in the quality of the food. But, when I hear Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," this is the place I think of. The ambiance alone makes it one of my too restaurant picks in NYC. Cozy and warm in Winter; an inviting sunroom in spring/summer. And they still have live jazz on weekends. Just steer clear of the lasagna, which they really push. Pizzas are OK, but the crust is not as good as it used to be. The bread with the cheese plate is amazing, and I am partial to the panini. Good wine selection at a reasonable price for NYC. Great coffee menu. Still love it even if it isn't perfect! (And the wait staff can be indifferent at times. Sometimes you just have to demand attention!)

Cheap and cheerful Italian in Greenwich Village a good choice if you’re going to the nearby Comedy Cellar or Blue Note. Basically pizzas or lasagne - the latter available As a ‘flight’ ie four quarters of different lasagne. They were all decent. The wine by the glass was nothing special but we liked the ‘greenhouse’ area at the back. Very busy but not too noisy.

I can safely say La Lanterna is never a bad decision. Whether you want a full meal, a little snack or just to chill and listen to jazz La Lanterna will welcome you and send you do a different place in the most positive of terms. I’ve gone to La Lanterna since I was little and it’s food, service and tone never disappoint. The pizza is simple and classic in taste yet constructed different from any other. The salads leave you wanting more with their fresh and light flavors. And the pasta is thick and filling in combination with the other flavors as pasta in your dreams is. And do not even get me started on the deserts. It is perfect for any big event or just a family outing. And I personally recommend the mixed greens salad every chance you get to dine with them because it is absolutely everything a salad should be, while incredibly simple. Whenever and in whatever terms you go, La Lanterna will leave you in a good state of mind, and wanting more.

My first visit to La Lanterna: Sat at table in their rear garden (covered atrium) and had a terrific meal, a "flight" of lasagna, four flavors served in individual ramekins. Good red wine, perfect service. Only minus was paper napkins. Real food demands real, cloth napkins.

We both got the three cheese lasagna, which was really good but too much cheese which I never thought I'd say. I got the caramel custard for dessert which was ok. We also got the dulce de leche gelato which was amazing. The service was attentive altho not friendly, which seems to be the norm for NYC.

I was intrigued when I found this place on Trip Advisor. Great ratings and unique menu. They press their own oil from peppers which we used to dip the the bottomless bread bowl. We had a large group so we ordered many items which we shared. The Pesto Pizza and Pesto Lasagna are certainly worthy of note. Cappuccino and tiramisu capped off a great meal. Tammer was our server and he was excellent.
