Creating a French Bistro experience is a challenge for a Restraunt and Match 65 has done so exceptionally well. Speaking with our waitress, who has worked there for 16 years, their passion for meeting the highest standard of this classic style of cuisine is palpable....And the atmosphere is electric. Pure left bank. What to choose? We began with Steak Tartar and Escargot. Parsley butter boiled around the Escargot in the classic escargot dish. Seemingly making a comeback in many establishments , the presentation of the humble snail was succulent. It’s flavouring enhanced by the heavy use of parsley. A classic bistro dish, Steak Tartar is becoming more widespread in North America cuisine. Unfortunately, it often has the flavour profile of a Costco hamburger. Match65 brings a spiced masterpiece. A quail egg, presented in its half open shell (one must admire the Sous chef who carefully exposes the the egg while preserving the shells - a most perfect vessel). Gently turning the fragile shell, the egg flows into the Tartar to be quickly mixed with the meat. Such promise in presentation does not disappoint. Spiced and bound with the egg the flavours stand out and dance on the palate. The mains must be Les Moules. These are presented in a classic pot. And they are large, meaty and delicious. My companion, did register an objection. There were too many to easily reach the sauce! Crepe Suzette ought not be missed, if only for the waiter lighting the dish with a flick of a bic, at the table in a shallow dish. The crepe itself was basic, not equal to Le Continental in Quebec City. They are different beasts one highly formal the other a Bistro. The espresso is excellent. So the next day we returned again! My companion returned to the escargot. I chose the French Onion Soup, which was excellent but needed more wine to flavour the broth. Coq au Vin and Steak Frits came next. Both classics. While the soup lacked the needed wine, the Coq was full flavoured and moist. Though not a fan of the oft overcooked, tough and undersized Steak many places offer up, I trusted here the quality would be upheld. I requested rare. The risk! And what a reward. The Angus cut was generous and perfectly rare. Tenderness worthy on a tenderloin. The Frits held up the standards. A word about the wine list. It is extensive. I chose by the glass the Cote de Rhone was solid with the Moules. I heartily recommend the Pomerol with the steak. It was full bodied, Heaven on the pallet and a touch tannic. My companion enjoyed Pinot Grigio and the Sauvignon Blanc. Alas, one can only say there were as intended! In a city with too many indifferent Italian, and oft over priced, Italian offering cross Madison and meet your Match on 65th.More

Went with friends for brunch - overall the food was pretty good. My croque madame had the appropriate crunch with the egg cooked properly, and I appreciated the option to have a side salad instead of fries. Of the other items ordered, my friends said...the trout was quite good while the egg dishes were more "average". The biggest issue here is how many tables are stacked next to each other. You will hear several different conversations other than your own - and if someone in the restaurant is sick, two dozen people will be infected. Would eat here again for the good food, but will wait to see if they have the outdoor tables this summer rather than deal with all the noise inside this winterMore

I am sooo happy and sad that I hadn’t tried it sooner , to have found this little gem . One of my sons wanted French onion soup another one wanted steak , what else can you get that mash up unless you go to...a French restaurant. I finallly find the best NYC French ionic soup and this is it!! Along with yummy food service was true quality and attentiveness which is hard to find in NYC . Fact the manager Julie was kind enough to give my son a take home mouse which he enjoyed . Will rerun and make a reservation, small yet gets packed quickly .More

I have to say, the food was rather underwhelming. But the wine list quite amazing. The steak was great, the cut of meat excellent, the fries and all that went with the steak....not so much. The chicken Paillarde was burnt heavily on the edges, and...the salad on top was very unexceptional, something you can easily get at Panera for the fraction of the price. The Pate of duck foie gras was tasty but it was supposed to come with "crostini" and it came with toasted white bread, I wondered if it was Wonderbread. The bread basket served at the beginning was also a little strange. It was not a French bread, it was something you can get at Eastern European Markets, a cross between sourdough and rye bread. It was served with butter so firmly chilled that this soft bread was disintegrating during the spreading of butter. I know those are small things and I wouldn't even mention them if it wasn't for the fact that this was supposed to be upscale place. Perhaps we went with too high expectations? The meal was saved by the most delicious crepe flambé with Grand Marnier. Delicious! One appetizer, two entrées, carafe of wine (half a bottle) and dessert, over $200. We had a great lady waiting on us but, just like everywhere these days, the tables are so close to each other I can hear the person at the table next to me better that the one sitting across from me (my partner). Not a very intimate experience.More
