About
Darrell’s is a family-style seafood restaurant that’s been a favorite on Roanoke Island since 1960. Seafood is the definite specialty; the fried oysters are widely touted as the best anywhere, served with the traditional fixings of cole slaw, french fries and hush puppies. Locals know that Darrell’s does seafood right. Land food, children’s fare and light eaters’ dishes are also available. Darrell’s is now serving the best BBQ and BBQ Ribs fresh off an all narural wood fired smoker. Helpings are heaping and desserts are delicious, if you have room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served Monday-Saturday .

Darrells came highly recommended so we were quite disappointed. It was pricey for what was offered & I was unable to eat my fish sandwich. I left most of my meal on my plate & the waitress never noticed or commented. My husband’s meal was better, but so-so.

Overall we enjoyed our lunch experience today at Darrell's in Manteo. Entering the restaurant we were immediately greeted at the door. We stood and waited as she sat two other parties. She came back and asked us to wait a couple more minutes. After a short wait she took us to a booth in the dining room off to the side.
We were immediately greeted by our server Laura who introduced herself to us. She was very friendly and hospitable, she was also very busy. She took our drink order, I ordered a Diet Coke ($2.49) and my wife ordered a water. After serving our drinks we ordered lunch. I ordered a clam chowder($3.99) and a fish sandwich ($9.99) and my wife ordered a Chicken Fingers Appetizer ($9.99) and a side salad ($3.99).
After tasting my beverage I realized that Laura served me Sweet Tea by mistake. After asking her to replace she did so and apologized.
My chowder was served quickly. On the menu it stated that it was a clear style of chowder. It was full of clams and vegetables and had a good flavor. My wife's side salad was pretty uninspiring and was served with Ranch instead of Honey Mustard as ordered. No big deal. It was obvious that Laura our server was very busy.
Fried flounder was fresh and fried to golden brown. Served with standard Lay potato chips (Fries are 1.00 extra). My wife liked her Chicken fingers.
Laura handled the check at the table with a contactless device. Overall a good lunch at a very busy restaurant.
We noted they scored a 99 on their most recent health inspection showing they are doing a good job with food sanitation standards.

We did take-out on a rainy Friday night. They request take out orders to be processed on their online system which we love because ordering online is usually quicker and easier than calling. We placed our order and were surprised it would be ready in only 20 minutes. I arrived and clicked on the link and within minutes our order was delivered to my car. Among the easiest take out experiences. The food was good (not great), cooked pretty well, and had a good amount of flavor. The portion sizes were a little on the small side for the price but not so bad that we would complain. We were satisfied and glad that it was still hot when we got back to where we were staying since we are not eating in doors right now due to the high COVID prevalence here locally.

Didn't want pizza but other reviews mentioned subs were VG. Wife had the Philly cheese steak and said the meat melted in her mouth. My Italian (hot) was the best I ever had!!!!! The straw onions we're also delicious. If we return to the Outer Banks, we will definitely stop by again. This is a must for you.

We stayed in Manteo for 2 nights and picked up food at Darrell’s both nights and one breakfast. The broiled seafood platter is excellent as is the fried oysters. Breakfast was good. We did takeout due to COVID but the restaurant looked nice inside. Be sure to tell them what sauces, butter, utensils you need when you order.

I have eaten food from this restaurant on a number of occasions. Usually, I am pleased with the meals that I buy but on this Friday night September 15th, I definitely was not. I placed a to go order in person for over $78 worth of food. The order included 2 well done grilled tuna dinners which included black beans over white rice with pineapple salsa and hush puppies.I also ordered a chicken alfredo dinner which on the menu stated it came with a side order. In addition I ordered a pound of chicken tenders and a gallon of sweet tea. The restaurant was busy as was expected on a Friday night for dinner. I noticed the young man who took my order over the counter stopped in the middle of my giving him my order to answer the phone and take another order over the phone which I thought was odd and trying to do too many things at the same time.
When my meal came out to me, I examined the two grilled tuna dinners and saw that the tuna was not well done as I asked for but medium well done. I asked the man working at the front counter to please send them back to the kitchen and ask that they be cooked to well done as I'd ask for. He did. Because I'd waited so long to get my order back I did not check it carefully before I left the premises. When I got to my friend's home we saw that the side order which was supposed to be included with the chicken alfredo was not put into the bag with the rest of the food. Once we started eating the black beans and white rice with pineapple salsa we noticed that the black beans and rice tasted overcooked and over seasoned. The two grilled tuna dinners were definitely not worth the price of $22 each that was paid for them. I will not order tuna meals again from Darrell's. If I do return to order food from there again I will definitely check everything before leaving the premises to make certain that I'm getting what I've paid for.

This place is good if you like seafood, but not the best if you're not used eating a lot of seafood. Options were limited and they sold out of a lot of things before we were able to order. My cheesecake was lackluster. My son loved his flounder, however, and we were able to be seated right away.

We ate here on Saturday 7/10. We got there about 8:20, noone told us they closed at 9 pm. Our bbq was greasey bottom of the pot , chicken tender and mashed potatoes were cold and sweet tea tasted like it was burnt over the smoker. We have ate here before and everything was great. So we decided to try again on Wednesday night. Again the food was cold, tea was terrible and the service was horrible. We felt rushed to eat and get out. Don't bring my ticket as soon as you bring our food. The Darrell's in Nags Head was a thousand times better than this location.

The food was just okay it didn't live up to the hype I got from other's. That's okay.
The manager/owner not sure, she was the worst one of all. We should of left then. We are a very kind family and we tip very well more than most.
We will not go back. There's to many other restaurants in the outer banks who care for more than just there locals. Nothing against the locals. Everyone should be treated with respect no matter your color, race or by appearance.
God bless this place to do better.

We love breakfast and finding places that have different menu items is fun! We had a great breakfast here; social distancing was done well. I took one star off as the omelette was odd; flat and not fluffy though tasting good. The scrambled eggs with diced ham, cheese and onions was super! The sweet potato pancakes were great but the piece de la resistance was the biscuit beignets! Oh my goodness...they looked like fritters and the inside tasted of biscuits but the crunchy outside and powdered sugar made it a melt in your mouth treat! We were in awe of such a great idea! Kudos and yum yum!!!

I felt like I was eating at a place that didn’t have any spices in the kitchen. My son had the catfish which was mush, My daughter in law had the sautéed crab and shrimp, and I had the hamburger steak. The sides are all out of cans, the mashed potatoes are instant and more water than potatoes. The meal cost $98 for three people. Not worth it at all and won’t go back.

Just like lots of other towns, Manteo seems to have restaurants that are modern, hip, and decorated up a storm. Tablecloths, fancy dinnerware, flatware, and glasses. Not Darrell's. It's a throwback kind of place with good service and good food.
My wife had clam chowder and a salad with oysters on top. The chowder had chunks of potato in it, which was a little unexpected. When she thinks chowder, she thinks creamy. But it was really good.
I had an old NC beach standby: fried popcorn shrimp, with green beans and pickled beets as sides. The amount of shrimp was on the smallish side, but they were tasty. The sides were good, as well.
I would definitely go back!

My husband and I have dined at this restaurant the last three days of our vacation. I got the soft shell crabs. They were cooked perfectly. Sweet and crisp! My husband got the blackened grouper over black beans and rice with pineapple sauce. Just the right amount of spice. The sides available were all homemade. We shared a slice of the 14-layer cake for dessert! What a grand ending! Gail’s, our waitress, was wonderful! We will be back!

For the first time in about 16 months, we entered a restaurant. And not a restaurant with socially distanced seating and servers with masks--nope, here you would never know there is a pandemic still going on. But we were vaccinated and wore our masks when not eating and sat down for a late lunch/early dinner during a downpour.
I must say I wasn't expecting much from anything in this small town, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Between fish and barbeque, we all found something to eat. Service was great, too.
Highly recommended.

The staff was friendly, the clam chowder was lukewarm but the buffalo fried shrimps were fine. The salads were fine too. All of us were tired after a long drive but needed some food that was not the usual fast food type nor something that would take a long time to prepare. Darrell's served the purpose but wouldn't venture there given other options in the larger area
