We met for lunch with family and had some gen-u-ine Mexican food. The steak taco was remarkable and our grandchildren and the adults raved about the food and the decor--Barrio Star gets 5 stars! You place your order at the register and they bring it out when ready.

I had high hopes for barrio star as I had heard great things about the restaurant. The first disappointment was the marguerita which tasted water down and lacking any great flavor. The food was just ok the quest fundido with soy chorizo was a flop..it would be better without the soy and the cheese was not fundido style in any... More

This place has a trendy feel to it. We sat in the high tables, which after a while were very uncomfortable. The service was ok, but on the verge of bad. We had a group of 11 people & they only brought our 2 small baskets of chips and they were not refilled until we asked SEVERAL times. The place... More

We went to Barrio Star for a quick dinner before theater. It was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised by the food, drinks and service. From the outside the place doesn't look like much but starting with the cheerful, prompt and friendly service to the menu selections, it was a definitely repeatable experience! The cocktail menu is obviously... More

During our recent 12 day stay in San Diego, my husband and I visited Barrio Star 3 times. In this festive feeling restaurant, the wait staff made us feel like stars. These kind individuals, Kyle and Erin, went the extra mile to make sure our appetizers and dinners met our dietary requirements, tasted fabulous, and possessed attractive presentation. With both... The meals are good, as long as you are not expecting a real mexican flavor. They try to be so vegan and organic that I think they forgot to use salt and chiles in the menu. Not worth the drive from the hotel...

We went to Barrio Star last evening. We were sorely disappointed! The individual tables were gone and the menu has changed to the point that it was almost a joke. So far as the ambiance goes, the place apparently wants to cater to drinkers more than 'diners'. The room is extremely loud. The menu is a joke in that if... More

The Barrio Star Restaurant is a Banker’s Hill eatery across from St. Paul’s Cathedral on Fifth Street. You order first and then find a table. It is a trendy mix of Mexican/American foods, some with a vegan flair, for those so inclined. They serve a variety of mixed cocktails and have Taco Tuesday’s and daily happy hours. The Brunch meal... This is a corner restaurant that has developed a fine reputation for fresh cooked Mexican food. We happened to drop in on Tacos Tuesday. Great deal on all their tacos and discounts on beer and drinks. The carnitas were the best - very flavorful. We also ordered nachos again top notch. The Pale Ale is the best of their beers... More

I had a tamal and my fiance had chicken. She said it was the best she had ever eaten (I specialize in chicken, so that is high praise!). I wasn't crazy about the seasoned salt on the chips, as I am sensitive to food with onion and garlic powder and I always look forward to chips because they are usually... More
