“The Best Clam Chowder in Boston” - Boston Magazine Located right on the water in Boston’s historic North End, the charmingly rustic Boston Sail Loft has been serving up classic seaside eats to locals and tourists alike since 1984. The family-owned restaurant has become a Boston landmark for its great service, casual waterfront atmosphere, and fresh seafood, and there’s one dish that’s really put it on the map: their New England clam chowder.

We had dinner based on Trip Advisor recommendations and photos, and we were thrilled with the meal! We voted them "best chowdah! because of the dill permeating the soup -- and presentation is fantastic! (See pictures of the coffee cup serving with chowder dripping down...the sides.... fun!!!) Also, we shared the "two-lobsters for $50) and it did not disappoint!!More
The staff in this place hustle and work hard for you. It’s a casual, loud atmosphere with a welcoming, friendly vibe with outstanding food. I’ve had the shrimp stir fry in the past, it’s delicious. My most recent visit, I had the surf and turf...special, excellent. Special shout to our server, who was doing double duty, waiting on tables and working the very long bar. This is an awesome place.More

After doing research for a good seafood restaurant of in Boston, I found this restaurant ranked #15 out of 12K. I was not familiar with the area, but wanted to find a place convenient for uber to celebrate my son's birthday. He invited 2 other...guests but end the end it was 4 of us. This place does not accept reservations or call ahead so we took a chance and showed up around 6pm on a Monday night is late September. The weather was great and we chose to eat outside (seating for 5 would be near impossible outside). At a glance the restaurant seemed really small but then realized it had a deep area of seating inside. It is very casual and close to the waterfront. Masks required for indoor dining as nearly every place in the US. The inside felt more like a beer bar atmosphere than I prefer for an $$$ seafood restaurant.
We ordered a round of clam chowder, calamari rings for appetizers. Then we had lobster rolls, whole lobster and fish -n-chips as our dinner choices. '
The clam chowder was excellent with right proportion size clams and thick creamy soup. The soup came in mugs dripping on the sides for a decadent affect. It was the best.
The calamari came second, but it was too crispy and not particularly flavorful or fresh. I've had similar flavor with calamari from the frozen foods in the grocery store.
The lobster rolls were packed with lobster and they dove right in with large bites and mouth full of lobster. It was so good, they had to take a break so not to eat it too fast. The lobster rolls came with fries that were nicely seasoned and the right amount of crunch. They also were served with a small side of coleslaw that we almost overlooked until the very end.
The whole lobster was a bit of a disappointment as the lobster was very watery and a little chewy. It was a good size and price point at $29. I chose mussels as the accompaniment for the lobster and I enjoyed more than the lobster. However, I believe the lobster rolls were a better deal with more lobster meat.
The fish and chips were also uneventful. I was expecting long pieces of fish cooked in a light fluffy batter. However it was hard fried fish in smaller 2-3 inch pieces over fries.
The service outside was attentive but very busy with other tables outside. I can see how this place can get really busy during peak times.
Plan ahead when you go and ask about wait times beforehand.More
This place was actually recommended to us by a chef from another restaurant and he was spot on. The dill in the clam chowder made it!! Lobster Mac and cheese and the Boston cream pie was fantastic. My friend had the lobster roll and he...raved about it. Lovely staff and quaint space. Would absolutely go again.More
We had lunch here while exploring the wharf area. There are only a few tables outside, but I recommend asking for one with a view of the water (the view from tables near the front isn't as good). The staff was very friendly, and the...food was good. We ordered the Onion Ring Basket, Fried Fish Sandwich, Scrod with Rice, and Burger with Bacon & Cheese. The breading on the onion rings and fried fish was excellent - light and crispy, not at all greasy. Two people in our family have shellfish allergies, and while they do have very limited offerings for that (everything is fried together), the server was able to direct us to a couple safe choices. We'd definitely eat here again when in the area.More
