We tried to get reservations , they said no need. So when we arrived stayed outside for 15 mins . Cccccold! Food was average at best. Best thing shrimp dumplings…. One thing on menu if its spicy they put one chilly pepper on any that are hot…. The plate we ordered needed 5 peppers . Our waiter just laughed at us , when we were paying our bill . Not cool at all . So nope will not reccommend

The Taiwanese dumplings deserved a 5, the beef stew on noodles not more than a 3 (not much meat and quite fatty), so…? Well the starters arriving far after the main, the minimalistic service (quick was its only quality) and the plastic spoon (scandalous both for the customer and the environment) definitely make it a 3. it was not bad but I expected much better. Prices reasonable.

Giant menu, but we had the Chinese scallion pancakes which were delicious, Taiwanese pan fried dumplings and schezuan wontons with chili oil and peanut sauce, spicy salt and pepper shrimp and L17, a chicken and veggie stir fry. They were all delicious! Especially loved the shrimp and pancakes. Not fancy, plastic dishes, efficient service but go for the great meal!

I had eaten in Taiwan Cafe whenever I found myself in Boston, in 2009, 2011, and 2013. Now it's 2021, and I found it totally changed. I was surprised when I saw only a few customers around 6:30pm, the prime dinner hour. The Taiwan Cafe in my memory was packed. After this meal, I don't blame the customers who no longer return, as I'll definitely not go there again. The food quality went way down, and the service was bad. To add insult to injury, they charge you a 18% tip automatically. What would have been a $60 or so meal became $98 in this restaurant.

I can get past a lack of atmosphere in a restaurant if the food and experience was great. Unfortunately Taiwan Cafe failed in all three areas. Styrofoam cups, plastic utensils and food brought out so fast, we had no room to put anything between courses, let alone finish them, were the least of this establishment’s problems. The food was, well just not that good. Hot and Sour soup, a favorite of mine was way too spicy to be enjoyable. The fried dumplings were nice but the dipping sauce ordinary. The noodle dish was fine but virtually no pork or vegetables as ordered. The most disappointing was the Duck in Soy Sauce which was, well, chopped up duck in a plain bowl of soy sauce. I guess I thought it would have more flavoring than just soy sauce from a bottle but my expectations were way too high. There are better options at better prices with much better atmosphere. I know many people love this place and give it great reviews, I’m just not one of them unfortunately.

I was so disappointed. I ordered the pork fried rice which was buy one get one free, and I can see why it’s free. The “fried rice” is not fried at all. It is just steamed white rice. The pork was fine. All of the vegetables were raw. I have no idea what I’m going to do with the extra dish I have. I think I’ll just throw it away. It was that bad.

It's located right at the heart of Chinatown. As I'm from Taiwan, I'd say some of the dishes are authentic, yet some are not. But, who cares about authenticity if it tastes good, right?
Our top choices:
Sauteed Beef with Long Horn Pepper (Spicy)
Mini Steamed Buns with Pork
Beef with Tendons and Tripe (Spicy)
Simmered Chopped Chicken with Three Essences in Hot Pot
Spicy Beef Stew Noodle Soup with Spinach (Spicy)
It's a great place to enjoy Chinese food, so definitely come here for a quick bite.

Amazing lunch that made my tastebuds sing. Most notable is the pork and crabmeat xiao long bao. I’ve literally circled the world in search of the best, and this is it! Service can be a bit brusque, but that’s isn’t the main consideration in such a place.

Came here for dinner and were throughly satisfied. We all, including our son, found something to eat and enjoyed it. Highly recommend if you are in Boston.

Okay. The food here is decent, but I wouldn’t say this is the best food we’ve ever had but not the worst. We went specifically for the stinky tofu, which was the best thing we ordered.
My major problem with the place is that not only is there an 18% service fee but when the bill come it also suggests a tip. Really wasn’t impressed with that for a small kinda cramped place.

Sad to say this is an absolute no go. Tight quarters and messy. Unbelievably rude and argumentative staff. Ended up just canceling an order to go somewhere else.

I have only moved to Boston for the past 1-yr, and just started exploring Boston Chinatown. This has been the best restaurant for me, brings back a lot of childhood memories of Taiwanese food. Hands down the best dish (and rarest) is the Stinky Tofu with pickled cabbage in the appetizer section. It is only good when it comes out of the kitchen, as the stinky tofu is deep fried to a crisp and melts in your mouth with the tasty spicy sweet soy sauce. There is another 'braised' Stinky Tofu in the vegetable section that is stir fried like a hot entree dish, that one is the stinker and will bomb the whole restaurant when it comes out of the kitchen. Spicy beef noodle soup is the hands down next best. The staff is also very hard working and the Bossy Sister co-owner of the restaurant is super friendly, which helps improve the typical poor service of other Chinese restaurants. I am lucky to have casually experimented with this place as I work near South Station Boston, and their best deal is weekdays lunch menu price $12-ish until 4pm which is a huge value and a great deal. You won't be disappointed (go at low time as it is a small place and is packed easily).

Do not pass on the fish filet hot pot with mustard greens. Velveted filets in a surprisingly flavorful simmering broth. Braised eggplant. Spongy tofu. Terrific.

Unprepossessing from the outside and up some rather steep steps, this restaurant is in Boston’s Chinatown. The food was tasty, large portions - three dishes shared between three hungry people.
