About
Created by friends, UKIAH was born out of a true passion for Japanese soul food and southern BBQ. We welcome everyone to relax, eat and enjoy. Open 7 days a week for dinner and award-winning Sunday Brunch! With a mix of indoor and outdoor seating, a large central bar and dog friendly patio, we hope that everyone will find their perfect spot. Music is a mix of indie, old school, funk and soul. The name? It spells “haiku” backwards, reflecting a little bit on our approach to food… structure and balance, turned upside down… (Also – we liked it…) We look forward to welcoming you

I have eaten at this establishment before and enjoyed a fantastic meal that was not inexpensive. I took a guest to dinner for a special occasion and was horrified at the service and the lack of consideration. I ordered one dish three times asking that...a spice be left out of the dish. At first I was told "everyone likes it, you should keep it." I explained a food allergy. Thrice the same dish came back with the spice. The dessert ordered was plainly described on the menu. It included vanilla ice cream. The dessert brought to the table had citrus ice cream/sorbet on it. It neither enhanced the dessert nor was it included in any description of the dessert. I told the waiter that my guest had an allergy to citrus because of medication. The waiter said "That's all we have, we're out of vanilla." I found that rude, if not plain dismissive. One might think that the dessert, at least, would be taken off the bill. In fact, it was left on it, despite not eating the citrus ice cream or any of the dessert where the ice cream melted on it. One might think that perhaps a glass of wine or a five dollar miso soup might be comped (it would be an inexpensive gesture, for certain) as a way to show some care for the dinner brought out three times in error which caused my guest to eat first and me eat about 15 minutes later. Indeed, that display of care never happened. The bill was presented in full and the waiter, who was clearly not interested in his guests because he was glued to his cell phone, walked away. I paid cash to the penny. Walked out and will never return again. A special meal turned into a nightmare. Management didn't care. There are many excellent places to dine in Asheville and I will chose any one of them before ever spending a cent in this establishment again.More

Ukiah is to ordinary Asian cuisine as Limones is to Taco Bell. Everything I ordered was deliciously layered, gorgeously presented, and refreshingly novel. If you're looking for a departure from the humdrum, drop in and be transported to a better place, on a higher plane.

Husband and I had dinner there last night. I had a small $13 white Russian that was good but pretty expensive. We each ordered three items an appetizer and two parts of meal. All six of our pieces came out at different times and separately...from the kitchen. The place was crowded and we had to sit at the bar. But they say that’s the way they serve their food as it comes out of the kitchen they bring it right to the table. So my husband and I never even were eating our dinner at the same time. Very disorganized. I had the ribs and they were quite tasty. I also had a sweet potato that was good but it wasn’t what I expected. I also had the Rock shrimp appetizer which was plentiful. It was restaurant week so I’m cutting them some slack for a busy Saturday night in downtown Asheville. But the two of us left with a bill over $100. So not sure I would return. Very trendy but the food was not worth what we paid.More

My husband and I were in town from TX celebrating our anniversary. We visited many breweries and then decided on Ukiah for dinner based on all of the reviews we read and a recommendation by a bartender at Twin Leaf Brewery. Definitely order the chef’s...table. It’s pricey, but worth it…especially if you are an adventurous eater. I really enjoyed the tempura mushroom, salmon sashimi, peppers, and wedge salad among all the delicious small dishes we were served. I wasn’t a big fan of the broth of the duck hot pot or the coconut cake. The ice cream served with the cake was so tasty! I would definitely eat here again.More

Wow! The food, ambiance and service are superb. The interesting food has a definite Japanese influence with a twist. My dinner partner and I agreed this was the best meal we’ve had in a long time. Enjoy.

Japanese tapas. Very unusual and interesting menu. All items were excellent - we had the pork gyoza (dumpling), mushroom Bao (bun), baby book choy, sliced hamachi (most traditional dish of what we had), and an excellent and unusual Baby Back Ribs. The ribs are not...traditional “spare ribs”, these are lightly covered in a very tasty sauce, and cooked to perfection. Also recommend the Sesame Ice Cream Sandwich - which is a very unusual and tasty desert. Our server was Elizabeth, who did an excellent job with recommendations (great Sake choice - Sata Junmai Daiginjo), excellent timing, very professional and friendly. Will ask for her table in our next visitMore

I do not have enough kind words and positive adjectives to describe our experience. It was suggested to try the Chef’s Choice with beverage pairing. It was perfect! We were able to try some of everything. Absolutely delicious. All of the staff was so friendly,...knowledgeable, and welcoming. You have to make reservations for this dining experience and it was an experience. Do not miss this opportunity!More

Our girls night out in Asheville could not have been more perfect. From the wonderful spacey booth to the great cocktails to the amazing waitress Jill it was beyond our expectations at every level. The meal and all the tapas were absolutely delicious and some...do not miss dishes will include the beech mushroom, crispy rock shrimp, stuffed Japanese sweet potato, Wagyu beef sticks, and chocolate lava cake. Such a great and memorable night! We also had an allergy at our table and the restaurant was extremely accommodating for us.More

We were craving ramen so decided to try this place out. First of all, skip the ramen, it is not worth wasting your calories on them. Other tapa items were good, ie mushroom and vegetables. Unfortunately, if you really like ramen, I would skip this...place but I would try other items on the menu. Service is excellent. The sad part is that all the good steak items are meant for 2 people, wished they would serve steak for just one person. Likewise, the prix fixed menu requires everyone on the table to order the same menu (there were 2 choices)More

As a local I was excited to try this but was quickly let down. We were seated at the time of our reservation but after ordering drinks we didn't see our server for at least 15 mins. When they did arrive had to ask to...go through the menu as we had never been there before. We decided to order a few of the skewers, and vegetables. There were 5 vegetables on the menu, and they only had 2 available that evening. Some of the food we had were ok, a few of the things weren't good. Those items were left on the table, and we were never asked if there was something wrong with them or if we liked them. We were then brought our bill, which we expected to be costly, and it was, but was hard to swallow seeing as our visit and food were not outstanding.More

We booked our reservation for Ukiah to celebrate our 20th anniversary and it literally blew my mind. Our server was delightful and knowledgeable. She greeted us with complimentary glasses of prosecco to celebrate our anniversary- an unexpected and appreciated touch. The plates and cocktails were...an amazing blend of taste, smell and texture that I will remember for many years to come. Do not miss the crispy baby back ribs or the Pork + Shitake Mushroom Gyoz. Beyond! The ice cream sandwich was the most flavorful desert I think I've ever had. Honestly, can't say enough good things about this meal. Our compliments to the chef. I will come back to Asheville, if nothing else, but to experience Ukaih again.More

TL:DR- Awesome spot for a nice and unique dinner! Great food, great service, great atmosphere, dog friendly patio! The full version: My dad and I visited during our late September trip to Asheville and had a FANTASTIC dinner on the patio. It was chilly outside...but the heater near our table made it much more comfortable to sit outside, and we really appreciated that it’s dog friendly on the patio, so we were able to eat a nice meal together without having to figure out what to do with the dog during dinner. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious! We shared 2 items - the salmon shashimi and the crispy baby back ribs- and also each got 2 of our own items that we both loved. (I had the bok choy and the chicken sticks, dad has the beech mushroom tempura and the pork belly sticks). I have some food sensitivities and the server Jordan was incredibly helpful in making recommendations and assisting me in navigating making sure I could eat everything I ordered, and they were great about serving sauces on the side so my dad could experience everything exactly as intended when I couldn’t eat sauces. As a note- even without sauces I LOVED every bite! It was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The service was very friendly and helpful as well! This is definitely a place where it’s ideal to plan to order multiple items to share at least some of the courses. (Think Japanese food meets southern food meets tapas small plates style dining). Price wise, we spent about $50/person total without drinks, before tax. Not a stop for cheap meal, but not exorbitant for what you get, and an absolutely fabulous dining experience. A final note- while we didn’t do the tasting menu, at the end of the meal we asked about it for future trips and for a very nice multi course meal with lots of different items it sounded great, and not that much more money than we spent doing it the way we did!More
