My wife and I had just spent the past several hours visiting the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park followed by the Civil War Museum and decided to eat before returning to our hotel. Wanting to support the local economy and not knowing anything about...local restaurants , after reading several reviews we decided on the Rail Yard Restaurant. My wife ordered a hamburger and I ordered a half slab of pork ribs with sides. While my wife said her hamburger was OK (?) my pork ribs were burnt beyond being edible. I initially tried to cut the ribs apart , then tried another location without success. The ribs had been left on the smoker/grill(?) and forgot about. They should have been thrown away but instead they were served as a meal to a customer. I got the attention of our waitress and asked her to have the cook cut the ribs because I was not able to. She took my plate of ribs back into the kitchen then returned a couple of minutes later stating that the ribs could not be cut apart and that the ribs had actually been over cooked . She asked if I wanted to order another selection. I declined. The worst part about this is that these ribs could have been served dry (no sauce) . Sauce was added to mine which meant the cook saw these ribs, burnt and dry BEFORE he put the sauce on them and served them as my meal. The owner, cook and servers should be ashamed of themselves for presenting this to a customer.More

Oh boy, where to start? I had set up a MINI Cooper Rally that stayed in Appomattox. I had communicated with the restaurant and they said they could accommodate us. I told them we'd have around 15-20 people. Well, we had about 30 thanks to...a few last minute attendees. I reached out to the restaurant and informed them we were going to have a good deal more than anticipated. They didn't miss a beat, and basically said "Bring 'em on". They said they had a room ready for us and we were good to go. Well, we showed up and sure enough, a large room was set up with chairs and tables. The waitress, was super nice and informed us she was short staffed (as is everywhere these days) and asked if we could bear with her. I'm really sorry I don't remember her name. We had no other plans and told her we would be fine. She was humorous as well, which made for a fun evening. The food really came out faster than we expected. For the most part, the orders were correct and I didn't hear anyone dissatisfied with their food. Drinks from the bar were good and also came out fast. For inundating them with about 50% more people than we told them, they did a great job! I wouldn't hesitate eating there again if I'm ever in the area. Good job folks, thanks for having us!More

Scotch eggs were on point. Asked how I wanted my burger cooked, caught me off guard, but really appreciated it. Burger toppings; lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion, were fresh and very proportionate to the half pound burger. My wife had the club which was also...delicious, bacon was very flavorful and bread toasted nicely. Would definitely eat here again if I am ever back in town.More

After touring the national park, we were looking for some great, home cooked burgers. After reading some reviews, we decided to try Rail Yard. The outside is very low key, but due to the reviews of the food, we went on in. We both ordered...the 1/2 pound mushroom bacon burger and WOW, was it good! Perfectly cooked, fresh, with lots of bacon, mushroom & mozarella cheese. Absolutely delicious! My husband ordered onion rings (he gave me a few, which you see on my plate), and I ordered cole slaw. The dining room is not fancy, but it's clean & spacious. The staff was friendly and the service was good. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area.More

Our first day of our Civil War road trip brought us to the American Civil War museum and Appomattox Court House. There wasn't a lot of options for breakfast but the reviews lured me to The Rail Yard. We parked behind the restaurant and walking...up to the front door felt bit sketchy. When we entered it was a standard small town breakfast diner. We were greeted with a smile and told to sit where ever we wanted. The menu was limited eggs or pancakes basically. My husband ordered eggs, bacon with pancakes and I got his side of fried apples. I ordered eggs, bacon, fried potatoes and biscuit. The food was home cooked and delicious. The bacon was perfectly cooked and the fried apples were homemade (not Cracker Barrel fare). The best item was the pancake. It was delicious thick and airy. Perfect fluff and taste for a pancake. The only negative thing I can say is the biscuit was fair and if I had a do over I would have ordered the toast. If you are in Appomattox I highly recommend the Rail Yard for breakfast.More

Wanted a taste of local culture passing through on a road trip. We were there on a Sunday and there was a full dinner menu and breakfast all day. The home cooking, large portions and friendly service made this a great lunch experience. Couldn't resist...the blackberry cobbler!More

I was underwhelmed when I first entered, but was starving. I was pleasantly encouraged by the number of patrons and the extremely friendly and attentive staff. I was unaware at first that there was a bar, which was later corrected. They were out of ribs,...so was disappointed, but the ribeye was cooked perfectly. The homemade ranch dressing for the appetizer was delicious, as were the onion rings and corn pudding. I had never heard of, let alone tasted, corn pudding. It was like a dessert. I will return just to have this again. Don't let the outside look fool you. You will get a tasty and filling meal inside.More

We had an early dinner here and it was great. Unfortunately, they do not have a gluten free menu. Fortunately, there is plenty of gf choices on the menu. The brisket is soooo good! Tbe smoke their own meats- brisket, pulled pork or chicken, ribs....Prices are very reasonable, waitress was friendly, atmosphere was laid back.More

Walked to this restaurant for dinner on a Saturday evening from Longacre Bed & Breakfast. We both had Steak & Cheese sandwiches which were delicious! It also came with two sides. Portions are generous for the price. Service was friendly and prompt. We would definitely...recommend this casual restaurant!More
