Best ever cioppino!

I love this place... this cioppino tipped all my past cioppinos to take top place in my book! My current favorite cioppino. To top it off, we sat at the bar right in front to watch the chef cook my meal! Will definitely be back! In fact we went twice during the 10 days we were there!

This is a basic southern Italian restaurant with an emphasis on fish and shell fish. If this is what you are looking for this place is great. We had the Ciopino and a starter which was also seafood. The sauce was perfect a seafood red sauce not the traditional meat or vegetable sauce poured over pasta at the end. They... More

Place to enjoy great food and local atmosphere. Outstanding seafood. Second generation owner with great family tradition and most especially Mother's recipes.

We ate at Sotto Mare's before attending Beach Blanket Babylon off of Green Street in the North Beach Italian Section of San Francisco. The seafood was fresh and well prepared. Portions were also good. This is a small counter and table restaurant. Therefore, I am assuming because the owner wants to turn-over the tables/seats there is no desert or hot... More

This was recommended to us by fellow Brits who had been before and it certainly didn't disappoint. We sat up at the kitchen/bar counter, which was the best way to see the frenetic cooking activity. The signature dish here is a seafood stew called Cioppino & we'd decided to share this before arriving so choosing was easy. The atmosphere was... More

We stopped here for a late lunch, had a great.clam chowder, so use had spaghetti seafood. We sat at the counter and watched the cooks prepare our food. Learned some things. We went back for Cioppini, a seafood stew. The best in the world. I totally recommend this unique Italian restaurant.

A lovely Air Canada stewardess recommended this restaurant to me, knowing that I would be going solo. From the hostess, to the many waitresses I interacted with and two of the cooks that I called 'artists', I felt welcomed and in great company while sitting at the bar. I kept thinking that if I was at a table with several... More

Staying in a nearby hotel, we decided to check this place out. It was packed, on a Tuesday evening, and they found us a spot at the bar. The service was excellent - attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The food was good, and the atmosphere was warm and comfortable. We had a great time.

Without a doubt if you like cioppino eat at Soto Mare! In the whole city none better! I have been dining here 12 years and always great! In a cool neighborhood also North Beach on Green St. Be sure to make reservations as they are busy every night!

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
