I had the scallops & my husband had the seafood risotto. Both were cooked to perfection! The owner made a point to visit us and chat about our meal. It is a small restaurant, big groups could be a problem.

My husband spent 2.5 days in San Francisco, ans stopped at Sotto Mare one night for dinner. The wait was very long (1.5 hours) on a Friday night around 8 PM. IT was VERY busy. We checked in with the hostess and walked over to the bar next door where we enjoyed some drinks during the wait. The closing time... More

Whilst this was a wonderful seafood place, it was very busy and the staff seemed overwhelmed. Great food, but could do with more staff.

We had a delicious meal here last night. Make reservations if you can because it is very busy. We sat outside which made for some great people watching. The risotto with seafood was amazing....clams, mussels, bay shrimp, prawns, bay scallops. A very large serving! Cracked crab for an appetizer was also very fresh and tasty. Great service with a smile.... More

I have been in San Francisco for 5 days now, and I can honestly say that this is the best place I have eaten the entire time I have been here. I had the seafood risotto which was cooked to perfection and my wife had the seared scallops that were tender and flavorful. Nothing less than DELICIOUS!

My daughter and I really enjoyed our dinner at Sotto Mare. We got there early - around 5:30 - and snagged two seats at their seafood bar - I highly recommend sitting here so you can watch the chefs in action. We split their cioppino for two and the reviews are all true - it was amazingly delicious. A silver... More

Very crowded and popular restaurant even on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm so glad we booked! Got a table in the basement - a bit dark but possibly more spacious than upstairs. Service was good and attentive - food was excellent. I would definitely recommend the Crab Cioppino. Would definitely go again

I've been here several times with my lady or a friend or two, but my most recent trip was with 14 co-workers and we had a blast. The main dining room is a lot of fun, but is all 2-4 tops (and some nice outdoor and bar seats too). We had a private room downstairs that we reserved - not... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
