We came here on a recommendation from two different bartenders and were not disappointed. The food was fresh, tasty and served quickly. The servers were very friendly (one even followed us outside to our Uber to give us a quick travel tip she we might want of after we walked outside!) and professional. I realize this place might be a... More

Probably not the #16 restaurant in SF, but it is good. Everyone gets the seafood stew for two-it looked good but we didn't get it. The best part of this place is it simplicity. 4 reds and white wines all the same price. I had a large plateful of san dabs, but after about half, they kind of lost their... More

Visited the restaurant the other Wednesday evening, taking 4 of my colleagues from around the world. Luckily I'd booked as people were waiting around the block. Setting is uncomplicated, the type you get when the food is good enough to do the talking. And it is. It's stunning, I'm sure I could go through the menu and not be disappointed... More

We were at fishermen's wharf and couldn't find an intimate seafood restaurant instead of the really huge touristy ones. Found Sotto Mare within a 15 min walk and everything was wonderful from the atmosphere and service to the clam chowder, sand dabs and seafood linguine. Top rate. But if crowded isn't your style, come early so you can sit outside

We were told about this place while on SF craft ale tour. Very busy but we got lucky and booked table for three. The food is mostly simple southern Italian seafood dishes and is delicious. Recommended.

So many restaurants to choose from in North Beach! We finally just randomly picked Sotto Mare! You will not be sorry! Excellent service and food. The place is cozy and busy! The seafood pasta dish is a winner! If in S.F., make this one of your stops!!

stopped by early like 5:00 and reserved table in person. Offer to eat on the front porch and they will get you in. One of the best meals we had all week.

Accidently found this place after our bicycle trip over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. After dropping the cycles I searched on FourSquare app for nearest seafood restaurant and found this little gem. We had to wait for our table for half an hour which we spent drinking in the nearby bar and it was worth the wait. They... More

Love this place. Been here before and came again with the same group as last year. The food is amazing, the staff is warm, funny and flexible (they just made up an appetizer fro the table) and the prices are good especially for what you get. The owner is present and engaging and the neighborhood has a great feel. The... More

Excellent Italian seafood! Went here on a busy Fri night and waited 2 hours for a table at the bar across the street....when we got in and got our food it was very hot and delicious . Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
