Excellent cioppino and risotto, great posters & photos on the walls. Ate downstairs, which was nifty.

Having spent an afternoon in one of the most disgusting, fly infested, dirty cafes on Union Square, or anywhere, Bancarella🙈🙈to come across this absolute Gem, was a piece of Italian Heaven, Sotto Mare! This restaurant restores your faith in everything that is great about Italy!...Wonderful friendly people who are genuinely interested in making sure your meal will overwhelm! Wonderful crab and other assorted fish plates that make your tastebuds tingle for days after. Food and awesome flavours to die for! I can’t wait I go back!More

I can't recommend this place enough! They have the best scallops I have ever had and the Cioppino is excellent as well.

The best cioppino I’ve ever had! Delicious tomato base with lots of fresh seafood and bread for dipping. Ample portion for 2. Great service. Enjoyed sitting outside. Safe neighborhood with lots of activity. Will definitely return the next time I am in SF.

The Crab saved this review from one star. The trademark of lazy kitchens is to precook and re-heat pasta telling the server to lie and claim it is al dente. It was pudding. Absolutely disgusting and over priced for what it was. The Crab Diavlo...is their specialty, and the crab was nice, garlicky spice etc. However the majority of the dish is linguine that was vile. The server could see I was not eating it and she steered clear. I did ask and they refused to cook it to order and give me a true al dente. This place is best avoided. p.s. do NOT order the iced tea, it is that nasty mix that comes from a gun.More

This is one of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco and I try to visit at least once on my business trips to the city. There is always a bit of wait but it's definitely worth the time! The oysters are super fresh (go for...the oysters from the West Coast as they taste more fresh!) .. the pasta is also pretty good! Friendly and prompt service and if you sit at the bar, you might get to chat to people next to you with awesome stories to share. I hope to come back soon!More

Wonderful food. Could not ask for a better experience. The seafood was great and tomato base sauce was amazing!

The linguine with seafood was so disappointing. The pasta was grossly overcooked, the cream sauce was overwhelming and the quality of seafood was mediocre. We had dined at Anchor Oyster Bar the day before and it was soooooo much better. Please go there instead.

We absolutely love this place. Always so lively and the food is always amazing. We love how the owner is usually there and always so kind and friendly to customers. Definitely a must go in SF.

My wife had been here previously, and thought I’d enjoy it. No foolin’! This place is great. Busy at lunchtime, but we were seated in five minutes. Extra cool was sitting at the counter near the back, easy to watch all the cooking going on....Cut to the chase: Trish had lobster with pasta, and loved it. I had the seafood risotto, with chef’s choice of seafood (I got shrimp, mussels, small scallops and such). We cleaned our plates, and these were not small portions. Combine the food with nice service and a reasonable drinks selection, Sotto Mare is not to be missed.More

I think they will split a regular order for two persons, but I don’t think there are half orders. It’s very reasonably price and terrific.
