Are they wait in line for over an hour good? No. Most things aren’t... however... it’s the experience. That one hour wait is worth it when you’re sitting on a filthy curb, digging steaming hot custard tarts out of a paper bag, happily chowing down...while watching the chaos of thousands of people walking up and down steep hills buying trinkets, TCM and eating their own mystery foods out of random bags... Do it.More

Some places in San Francisco are all hype and then disappointment, BUT Golden Gate Bakery is not one!! Believe in the hype, because the egg tarts are the best damn egg tart you'll ever have! We were lucky enough to get them while warm, which...is at their best. The pastry was warm and flakey, the custard just the perfect amount of sweetness and egg flavour, melt in your mouth silky. My only regret is that we didn't visit sooner or order more tarts so we could enjoy them longer. Like most things in Asian enclaves, the line is worth the wait - so go now!More

Their specialty custard tarts don't look like much when you see them, but the crust is light and flaky, and the custard is also light, tasty, and not overly sweet. At $33 a dozen they are pretty expensive, but they're worth it, especially if you...aren't in town often. Be conscious of the wait time as well, since there's usually a line - we waited in line for around 20 minutes on a Sunday. Also, this establishment is CASH ONLY.More

The tarts were still hot when we ordered them. I tried a custard and dried nut/fruit pastry as well. They had a huge variety of moon cakes that I wish we had room for! The pastry of the egg tarts were crispy and buttery. I...thought the egg custard could be slightly a bit more creamy. Either that or the egg overcooked a bit. It wasn't too sweet or runny. Pretty tasty!More

Got to the shop to get in line. There was a note on the door that they opened at noon. Fresh, flaky, egg custard was amazing. So glad I waited for it!

I usually don’t like Egg Tarts, but these Egg Tarts are top shelf. They're fresh and straight out of the oven. The Crust is Crispy and Buttery, and the Egg Custard is delicious. These Egg Tarts are a lot thicker than the ones you find...in your supermarket. While I was there, I grabbed a couple of Moon Cakes, Pineapple, and Taro. Golden Gate Bakery is a great little shop of baked Chinese goods. Take out only!More

They make these tarts whose base is flaky (halfway to a croissant) and mildly sweet egg custard. They are hot and fresh and get sold out every day. Long lines to get them. Sometimes, they give only two per head when they are about to...run out. Only cash purchase.More

I have tried to come to Golden Gate several times, but for whatever reason the bars are always up. This time I finally got lucky and they were open. The line went out the door, but the wait wasn't terrible, maybe 15 minutes. They are...known for the custard. The custard is huge and you can taste the egg in it. For $2.50/each it is worth it. I wanted to try their other goodies so I had the pineapple pie and the red bean cake which I enjoyed a lot as well. It seems like whatever they have here is good, but the custard is their money maker.More

We went for the egg custard tart and it was DELICIOUS! There was no line, we walked right in. They were warm and right out of the oven!

We visited this bakery to sample their famous egg custard tart. It was delicious, still warm from the oven, and with lovely flaky pastry. The line can be long, but for us it was worth the wait. Note this is not a restaurant, just a...bakery for take-away.More
